Keep together. Keep your eyes open. Keep your wits about you. The desert is unkind in the best of times. And the decade since the Civil War has been anything but the best of times for Daisy Wilcoxcall her Willieand her family. This tense, heart-pounding alternate history about a young woman fighting to survive the unthinkable will keep fans of Westworld and The Walking Dead reading late into the night. A horrifying sickness has spread across the West Texas desert. Infected peopleshakesattack the living, and the surviving towns are only as safe as their perimeter walls are strong. The state is all but quarantined from the rest of the country. Glory, Texas, is a near ghost town. Still, seventeen-year-old Willie has managed to keep her siblings safe, even after the sickness took their mother. But then her good-for-nothing father steals a fortune from one of the most merciless shake hunters in town, and Willie is left on the hook for his debt. With two young hunters as guides, Willie sets out across the desert to find her father. And the desert holds more dangers than just shakes. This riveting debut novel blends True Grit with 28 Days Later for an unforgettable journey.

#2020Book29
I've never been particularly interested in Westerns, but apparently I just needed someone to throw some zombies into the mix. This book hooked me from the first chapter and I was invested in the characters' lives for every minute. My only complaint is that the Garrett brothers sometimes seemed like the same character with two different names, but I guess that's how some brothers are in real life.

Danielthewriter Zombie Western? Wish i had thought of that first. 4y

If you like YA dystopians with a dash of zombies or "shakes" as they are called in this book then I highly recommend you give this one a shot. I really enjoyed it. I loved the characters especially the main character Willie. She may have been accompanied by the boys but brought plenty of girl power to the story.

I loved this YA coming-of-age, dystopian, western with zombies. Part of Texas has been blocked off due to the sickness. Willie is doing everything she can to make sure she and her siblings survive after losing their mother to the sickness. Their good-for-nothing father steals some money and leaves the family holding the bag. Willie sets out with two hired hunters to find and bring him back. #Booked2019 #genrebusting

@xxjenadanxx Thanks for the recommendation! I enjoyed this historical zombie story so much more than Dread Nation. Especially since it reminded me in some ways of Vengeance Road, which I loved.

I‘m a huge fan of zombie and dystopian books, but often they seem almost formulaic. With the mix of the Western setting and the atypical infecteds, Devils was a breath of fresh air for the genre. I loved the world building and the characters were very believable and relatable. The story grabbed me from the get to and held me right on to the very end.

A coming-of-age wrapped in dystopian wrapped in a western. 17 year-old Willie lives in a West hit by a plague that leaves them isolated from the rest of the country & under attack from infected (shakes). Running supplies falls to Hunters, thugs who traverse the desert between towns fending off shakes as they go. When her dad steals $ from a hunter & skips town, Willie is left w/ the debt so she hires 2 Hunters to take her on a journey to find him.

I finally finished this one this weekend! I listened to about 98% of it on audio then NEEDED to finish it so I sped through the last few chapters in print.

I would say this is a bit out of my typical YA reading zone: a western, zombie (of sorts), action/adventure story. That said, it was still a coming of age as Willie (don‘t call her Daisy) comes to grips with her life, her choices, and her responsibilities. I think we can all relate to Daisy.

I went on an audiowalk tonight and the weather was just gorgeous. We had a quick and violent afternoon storm that seemed to refresh the air.

When I was done with my walk, I sat on my stoop and choked back tears because my book just got EMOTIONAL. I‘ve been working on this one forever (I keep getting distracted by podcasts) but it‘s really good! I wasn‘t sure I would say that about a post-apocalyptic sort-of zombie western.

1. #TeamYanny
2. Half/half audiobooks and music. (Tagged under current audio.) Just started to dip my toes into podcasts.
3. 5/22 (Tuesday!)
4. Preschool and 1st. Youngest will be going to kindergarten next year so a sort of graduation but she‘ll still be at her preschool for a 1/2 day so they don‘t do “graduation” until after K.

I finally started this one a few nights ago then accidentally saw a bad review of it on GR and now I‘m worried even though I‘ve seen many other positive reviews. Ugh. Brain, don‘t worry, just enjoy!

Also, my daughter made me the bookmark. She said she made it for me but I found it by accident so I‘m not so sure. 🤔😏

I wanted to start this one tonight or at the very least listen to some more of my audiobook but now that I‘ve thoroughly checked out Instagram and scrolled quite a bit through Litsy I think I‘m just going to 😴 💤 🛏.

What an adventurous read! This story really pulled me in: a tough heroine who in order to protect her family goes on a dangerous journey to find her father, the desert setting, and of course the zombies. Also, romance is barely there at all and doesn't overshadow the plot. If you're a fan of westerns, zombies, then definitely read this!

I quite enjoyed this! Desert journey + female protagonist + zombie-type creatures = my kind of book. If that's your kind of book too, I believe this is out in April!
