Asking Questions
Asking Questions: Using Meaningful Structures to Imply Ignorance | Robert Fiengo
5 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Asking Questions examines a central phenomenon of language - the use of sentences to ask questions. Although there is a sizable literature on the syntax and semantics of interrogatives, the logic of "questions", and the speech act of questioning, no one has tried to put the syntax and semantics together with the speech acts over the full range of phenomena we pretheoretically think of as asking questions. Robert Fiengo not only does this, but also takes up some more foundational issues in the theory of language. By positioning the findings of contemporary grammatical theorizing within the larger domain of language use, Fiengo challenges the use theorist to acknowledge the importance of grammatical form and the grammarian to acknowledge the importance of use. In addition to developing an Austinian distinction between four questioning speech-acts, and a proposal concerning the philosophy of language, Asking Questions contains a useful discussion of the type-token distinction and how use of language compares with use of other things. Fiengo also considers the nature of multiple questions, revealing what one must know to ask them, and what speech acts one may perform when asking them. Asking Questions advances our understanding of a wide range of issues in a number of important respects. Scholars and students of linguistics and philosophy will find plenty to interest them in this pioneering work.

How many of you stay up late like me? Do you wake up early to get more reading in or enjoy sleeping? I always thought readers and writers alike were inherently nocturnal but I knew that couldn‘t be true. I have to admit even in the last days of winter, I relish the Colorado sky. Have a good night!

I had to sleep on this one.

1. The community! For most of us this is the only place where we can really connect with like minded book lovers. Introverts rule here.
2. Negativity
3. Help if Litsy didn't force you to pick a book everytime you posted. It should only force books when doing a green "review", but if you do a red "blurb" or blue "quote" it should not have to connect to a book. Would avoid unrelated clutter when looking up books.

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego 3. Cont... You should be able to share whatever I want here, but I understand the frustration when your just trying to get info on a specific book. 4y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego 4. I post every few days usually but I use the app multiple times a day. And like or comment daily. 4y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego 5. I enjoy all Litsy activities. 4y

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego 6. Litsy is an imperfect app, but most the issues that people are having have been discussed at length in the OnwardLitsy group on FB, and Admin is already aware. So let's just keep the positivity flowing here on Litsy! 4y
wanderinglynn Great answers! 👍🏻 4y
julesG Like your idea in #3! 4y
ljuliel Thanks for your replies. Very good points. I‘m not saying that everything else needs removed from Litsy other than book reviews. It seems , especially lately, that the majority of posts were way off topic. Just thought it best to see if we can tilt the scales back so books get a larger amount of air time. As for the Litsy FB group, I‘m clueless. I‘ve never been interested in FB so I‘m unaware of what they talk about in there. 4y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @ljuliel When @TimSpalding and company took over Litsy from the Out of Print guys, they created a group on FB to gain feedback on the app. Probably because at the moment it's easier to comment/chat on FB. I assumed you were part of his admin team since you could tell that participation had gone down on Litsy. 4y
ljuliel Nope. I‘m not a member of any team. Just a long time Litsy person who hangs out in here a lot, to the point where I can see that posts have drastically dropped and several daily posters are long gone. 4y

1. Shiloh, featured here often as my reading buddy 😃🐶
2. Finishing a painting/staining project because the weather looks too crappy for much else!
3. Camping, biking, excercise classes, grandkids, I'm cheap so give me a can of spray paint and I'll craft some home and patio decor.
4. WA, CA, AK.. send me anywhere!
5. Saw this on Bobby Bones, made me feel better about my own #. How many close friends do you have that you can rely on for ANYTHING?

TrishB Probably 3 close friends. 5y
cobwebmoth Only my husband. I don't really have any other close friends. 5y
wanderinglynn Maybe 2. Definitely 1. 5y
Djspens I should probably answer my own question... 2 5y
CouronneDhiver Oh golly... 2 ... plus, maybe, a couple of very kind Littens. 5y

Itchyfeetreader Interesting question. I think about 80 percent of the stuff I see comes from 20 percent of the people I follow but not sure if that has ever been very different. 6y
riversong153 @Itchyfeetreader agreed! Usually the same people are active (at least in my feed). 6y
Itchyfeetreader I also think you follow most of the folks I follow who post good reviews etc. 6y

julesG I've been noticing this, too. I even checked a few people because I felt like I was missing their posts. 6y
CouronneDhiver Yes. I‘m not seeing nearly as much involvement. I‘ve increased my own participation so that I can keep some good connections going 6y
Lindy I feel better about posting so many quotes lately, and I hope you find them interesting. 6y
JazzFeathers I've noticed that too. I started being active on Litsy last year about this time and l remember that in spite of having less followers then now and following less people, going through the feed required me longer than it does now. Also when l posted my phone went crazy with notificatons. Not nearly as much now. I was wondering why. 6y
Weaponxgirl I stopped reading and posting for about 9 months and I've noticed the loss of some people posting who I used to love following. There does seem to be a core group of people posting. 6y
saresmoore These are very good questions! I‘d be interested in the stats on this. @Litsy (Giveaways and lists are kind of ruining it for me... 😑) 6y
saresmoore @Lindy I imagine you already know it, but I love your quotes! 6y
Amandajoy I know I haven‘t been as active over the last few months because life has been crazy, so I‘m really not sure. 6y
LeahBergen @saresmoore I hear ya! I like to learn a bit about my friends on here but there are just way too many questionnaires now. 6y
Lindy @saresmoore Yay! I‘ve earmarked another quote with you specifically in mind. 6y
TimSpalding People‘s experiences are going to vary enormously, but I think the overall stats don‘t support this. It‘s jagged, but YOY January and a February were slightly below 2017, March, April and May slightly above. Month by month, we‘re steady 40-50k posts from August of last year. No big changes. 6y
TimSpalding As for Giveaways and such, I don‘t know. I think I previously showed (on FB) that blurbs had increased since the early days, with the probable assumption that non-book posts had also grown. But I don‘t think we have evidence either way on whether the mix has changed recently. 6y
Bibliogeekery @Lindy I like all your posts!! 6y
Soubhiville I scroll right by surveys most of the time, and don‘t participate in giveaways very often... my TBR is huge as it is! But I‘ll try to notice posters who have great photos and reviews and tag you on their posts. @Lindy I enjoy your quotes too! Great way to get a feel for a book! 6y
saresmoore @TimSpalding Interesting! Thank you for sharing the info. I think Litsy could prove to be a statistically telling experiment over time. The relative anonymity and “follow-back” culture is more concentrated and therefore distinct from various other platforms. It‘s like a microcosm/subculture that way, but (I think) is growing beyond its usefulness as such. Whereas on Instagram, et al., the user curates their own subculture based on who they follow. 6y
saresmoore @LeahBergen At what point is it too late to weed the “Following” garden? I wonder if a favorites list wouldn‘t be a beneficial feature? (MySpace Top 8 😂😱) 6y
LeahBergen @saresmoore With a nod to Gwen Stefani ... I ain‘t no “Follow Back” girl. 😂😂 I only add people that choose to interact with me on here and post things that interest me. It may seem “Litsy rude” but ... 🤷🏻‍♀️. I can‘t have a feed so huge and unwieldy that I can‘t find my friends (like you!) 6y
LeahBergen @saresmoore And weed away. I‘ve been doing it for over a year. Shhhh! 😆 6y
saresmoore @LeahBergen You have no idea how much guilt you just assuaged! As I (continue to) weed, I‘ll just keep thinking, “Ooh, this my shit, this my shit.” 🎶😆 6y
LeahBergen @saresmoore And now I keep singing it 😂😂 6y
Bibliogeekery @LeahBergen @saresmoore now it's in my head TOO 😂😂 6y
Bibliogeekery @LeahBergen @saresmoore - I'm going to consider weeding too! 6y
LeahBergen @Bibliogeekery It will be our new theme song. 😂 6y
Bibliogeekery @LeahBergen B-A-N-A-N-A-S 🎶 6y
Lindy @Soubhiville I scroll past surveys and giveaways both. A lot of Littens seem to enjoy the gift exchanges, but that‘s not what I‘m looking for either. I do a lot of scrolling to find the posts that interest me. It‘s worthwhile, because I like the bookish folks I‘ve come to know here. 6y
Soubhiville @LeahBergen @saresmoore @Lindy @Bibliogeekery I tend to weed fairly regularly too, and always check out new followers before I follow back. Things that deter me- posts with no photos, a page entirely made of giveaways/surveys/swaps, no posts in over a month, no posts at all 🤷‍♀️. Also anyone who only posts genres I don‘t read. Gotta keep my feed full of friends! (edited) 6y
