Elysium Fire | Alastair Reynolds

Elysium Fire is a smoldering tale of murderers, secret cultists, tampered memories, and unthinkable power, of bottomless corruption and overpowering idealism from the king of modern space opera. Ten thousand city-state habitats orbit the planet Yellowstone, forming a near-perfect democratic human paradise. But even utopia needs a police force. For the citizens of the Glitter Band that organization is Panoply, and the prefects are its operatives. Prefect Tom Dreyfus has a new emergency on his hands. Across the habitats and their hundred million citizens, people are dying suddenly and randomly, victims of a bizarre and unprecedented malfunction of their neural implants. And these "melters" leave no clues behind as to the cause of their deaths... As panic rises in the populace, a charismatic figure is sowing insurrection, convincing a small but growing number of habitats to break away from the Glitter Band and form their own independent colonies. Bk3 of March is the 2nd Prefect Dreyfus Emergency. I‘m loving this series, so much so I‘ve put the authors backlist on my wishlist.Dreyfus is now Senior Prefect after Aurora & the Clockmaker but still works in the field when people start dying after their neural implants melt their brains. A world of hyperpigs, abstraction, light hugger ships, augmented humans & quickmatter! #SeriesLove2024 #BacklistReadathon #Readaway2024 #BookspinBingo

Aargh! My dog ate my book while I was out this morning! She hasn't eaten a book in a long time--I wish she hadn't picked one from the library!

Second in Reynolds Prefect series, set in an earlier period of the Revelation Space universe when the Glitter Band was still a shining symbol of human development. A series of deaths have occurred across the Band and the numbers of cases are increasing and investigations link them to the Voys on of the founding family of the Band. Not the greatest of detective stories, with a disappointing final quarter but a fascinatingly imagined setting.

I'm a huge fan of Reynold's Revelation Space universe, so I'm biased on this book right from the start. I like this recurring character set in an early time of this universe and hope to see some more novels in the future based on the Glitter Band. The only weak part to me was the ending. Still not quite sure what to make of it.

Mehso-so

I loved the first 75% of this but the ending just seemed rushed and quite predictable. I felt it was building up to some great plot twists but they ended up feeling like something of a cop-out.

Picked up the new Alastair Reynolds book. Can't wait to get to it as it's set in the Revelation Space universe. It's a follow-up to The Prefect.

Yeah_I_Read I didn‘t realize this was a follow up 😬 do you think it matters whether or not i read The Prefect first? 7y
speljamr @Yeah_I_Read It's a stand alone novel, so I'm sure it works just fine on its own. I highly recommend the other book too though! As well as all the rest of the books set in the Revelation Space universe. 7y
