Playing with Fire
Playing with Fire | Tess Gerritsen
What if your child wanted you dead? Julia doesn't understand what is happening to her daughter, but she thinks she knows what's causing it. She is terrified for Lily, and for herself, but what scares her more is that no one believes her. If she is going to help Lily, she will have to find the answers alone, embarking on a search that will take her to the shadowy back streets of Venice. There, Julia uncovers a heartbreaking, long-buried tale of tragedy and devastation - a discovery that puts her in serious danger. Some people will do anything in their power to keep the truth silent . . .

😂 I thought this was going to be a Rizzoli and Isles book. Enthralling from the beginning, with frightening moments, hold on because this thriller races to the end. Julia discovers a never published piece of music while in Italy. Her life immediately changes. Told from Julia‘s perspective (modern times) and Lorenzo‘s (WWII).

Julia Ansdell happens upon a piece of music THE INCENDIO WALTZ. When she plays it things start happening with her daughter. She ends up searching for the composer, and comes across a knowing more about herself and the composer as well.

This is such a good book I really couldn't put it down Gerristen wrote a really good one here. It has a really interesting and deep storyline involving world war two.

My first dip into Gerritsen's work was a success! PLAYING WITH FIRE hooked me quick and always left me eager to read on. The linked narratives--one set in the present, the other before and during WWII--play off each other to great effect, with genuine emotion and desperate tension laced through both. I did feel like part of the contemporary resolution could've packed a bit more punch, but the rest of the story absolutely delivers.

Andrew65 Love her writing. 7y
xicanti @Andrew65 I'm excited to read more from her. She writes the kind of prose that's so clear it practically reads itself. 7y

Supper involved gnocchi and zucchini cooked in a mixture of butter and bacon grease, then tossed in red pesto. It doesn't look like much, but it was delish.

Samplergal You had me at bacon.... 7y
xicanti @Samplergal I made sure to use a lump of grease with little crumbles of bacon preserved in it. 7y

Samplergal Squishy. 😉If you‘re large it‘s better. Usually it‘s pretty easy. The technicians are really nice I have found. They will make you less nervous. Good luck. 7y
JoScho You will be amazed at how much they can actually smush them. Good luck and enjoy your first Tess Gerritsen 💕 7y
AlaMich I have never found them that bad. For me, they‘re uncomfortable for sure, but they‘re over quickly. You‘ll be fine! Just wait til you have your first colonoscopy.... 😉 7y
xicanti @Samplergal yeah, the tech was really nice. 7y
xicanti @JoScho I'm loving it so far! She's super readable. 7y
xicanti @AlaMich the first three squishes were uncomfortable but not painful, but the fourth one hurt a bit and the one she had to redo was ghastly. I hope that was just because it was a do-over and it'll be fine again the next time I need a mammogram. 7y
AlaMich @xicanti Yes, and you will know what to expect, which is half the battle I think. 😊 7y

I basically borrowed the whole library as a form of no-spend retail therapy.

This was necessary because my day started with a trip to the doctor that resulted in two horrifically expensive prescriptions and a referral for a mammogram. None of this was a surprise.

It's a toss-up whether I'm more angry or scared. I'm glad so much Yotsuba was on the shelf, because I trust her to help me out with this.

A violin, a hypnotic Gypsy waltz, and the power of music play an integral part in this haunting story of love and loss. The author is also a violinist (and a medical doctor!) who wrote a waltz to accompany the story. I listened to the audio so I was able to hear this beautiful music!

TrishB I have this on my tbr and have never been tempted to it until your review! 7y
DivineDiana @TrishB Wonderful! I hope you can listen to the audio!🎻 7y

Help Litsians! I'm doing about 12 hours of driving this week for my job and looking for an awesome 12-hour-ish audiobook that will not only keep me awake but is really good. You can see from this post I love James Rollins' books. These were just too short. I did like this Gerritson book with a dose of history in it. So, any suggestions for historical action or mystery action adventure audiobooks?

jpmcwisemorgan Harry Potter!!! Jim Dale does a great job with them. 8y

Megabooks Not sure if this is 12 hours and I'm not sure any of these are your style, but I've enjoyed them all on audio. 8y

Texreader @Ebooksandcooks You are awesome! I'm going to start checking them out. 8y
BookishBelle I don't know how long they are bc I read the physical books but Tess Gerritsen's Rizzoli and Isles series is really good!! 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @Texreader the first ones are very long but the later ones will hold you for awhile. 8y
LiteraryinPA My favorites are Agatha Christie mysteries, specifically ones narrated by David Suchet. His voices are so good that you forget only one person is reading the book. 8y

This a bit of departure from Tess Gerritsen's usual crime that I read, but it was an unputdownable - I read it in 8 hours. I loved the two parallel stories. Lorenzo's story is set in an increasingly violent and fascist Italy during the second world war and Julia's in modern day America. Their lives collide through time through a piece of unpublished music called Incendio ... there are some heartbreaking moments.

I have got so behind with this, will catch up properly when back from hols. First read of trip to Italy is Playing With Fire. I love Gerritsen full stop this felt oddly slight and oddly full all at once. It's her most bonkersly brilliant thriller at the same time. And a standalone. Much to mull over. Good escapist holiday read though.

I thought this was an excellent book. The audio was very well done with the violin parts played at the right moments. Great mystery for a long drive. I know it's a good story when I keep playing it even after reaching my destination.

Suzze I don't do audio, but now I'm thinking about the violin parts. That is very cool. 8y
Texreader @Suzze I don't do audio either except for long drives. Or when the book is really good and I can't wait to hear how it ends. 8y
