RANT ALERT

I liked it - sort of, and only in relation to my enjoyment of the TV show - and will continue the series, but I‘m hoping the books get better from here or I won‘t be continuing for long. For being the Rizzoli and Isles series, Isles wasn‘t even in it. She wasn‘t even mentioned. This one was actually kind of painful. There was a ridiculous amount of sexism that is not present in the show.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics Meat is “men‘s food” and a daughter‘s career - Jane‘s career - is less important than either of her “good looking brothers.” Frankie is a huge jerk in this one, and can‘t be bothered to help either his mother or his sister in the kitchen, and Jane was yelled at for having to rush back to work in the middle of a case because Frankie is home from war and he should be her priority. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 2w
GingerAntics Worse yet, Jane was openly sexually harassed by another detective when he put one of her tampons in her bottle of water. One character even had all white furniture specifically because it was “pure” and “virginal.” Supposedly this was written in 2001, but that one made me question if it was actually written in 1901. It was just deplorable. I know the show came from the books, but so far the show is WAY better. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 (edited) 2w
GingerAntics It doesn‘t take long to remember this was written over 20 years ago, and the reminders never stop coming. From medical charting being done by hand, the explanations of what chat rooms are, what CODIS and VICAP are, to referring to a character as not quite as attractive as Mel Gibson but still good looking, the dated references just keep on coming. That Mel Gibson reference did NOT age well at all. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 2w
See All 17 Comments
GingerAntics It even refers to AOL accounts being used in office settings (which I never knew was a thing seeing how expensive it was). There was also a black guy with a cop‘s boot on his neck and no one batting an eyelash. I nearly stopped at that point. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 2w
GingerAntics The narrator was HORRIBLE. She doesn‘t know how to pronounce the first victim‘s name, Ortiz (and apparently no one else involved in the production of the audiobook knew either). She also couldn‘t pronounce basil, saline, epinephrine, or synapses. All of these words came up multiple times. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 2w
GingerAntics Considering the author is a medical doctor, you‘d think you‘d get someone who could say these basic words, but no. Considering this version of the audiobook was recorded in 2020, it‘s just ridiculous. #TessGerritsen #TheSurgeon #RizzoliAndIsles
#JaneRizzoli #Mauralsles
2w
AnnCrystal I haven't watched the show or read the books, but did some web research for you, here is what I found:

“Rizzoli appears in the series' first novel, The Surgeon, and Isles is introduced in the second, The Apprentice, which serves as the basis for the television series.“

Hope this helps 😉📚📺💝.
2w
GingerAntics @AnnCrystal I know. I looked that up while I was listening. There is a fan page that lists the characters in each book. 2w
AnnCrystal @GingerAntics 🆒😉👍🏼💝. 2w
GingerAntics @AnnCrystal I‘m really hoping this author isn‘t a medical professional anymore. I hope she‘s switched to writing full time. Her insistence that the uterus is what makes a woman a woman had to have been horrible for her patients that had hysterectomies back in 2000. Ugh. I wish she would shut up about that already. 2w
AnnCrystal @GingerAntics Yikes 🤔😕🤨. 2w
GingerAntics @AnnCrystal yeah. As a female medical professional… I mean I get it was the early 2000s, but seriously. Honestly, I feel like the author may be slightly monstrous herself. Did her parents not like her (at all) compared to her brothers? So many questions. Maybe I should look up some interviews of her to try and get a feel for her. I‘m not sure I particularly like her. 2w
AnnCrystal @GingerAntics strange, and true about those who have been under her care...😢. 2w
GingerAntics @AnnCrystal it really is. I have such mixed feelings. I‘ll give it one more book, but if it doesn‘t start getting better, I think I‘m going to be done and I‘ll stick with the show. The show is SO much better. 2w
AnnCrystal @GingerAntics 😉👍🏼 Good plan. Don't let it ruin the show for you 📺💝. (edited) 2w
GingerAntics @AnnCrystal the show is so much better. I think it‘s cool that in the final episode, one of the characters is going to start writing crime novels, so Tess Gerritsen actuality appears on screen to meet with her to talk about it, but I don‘t have to actually like her as an author to appreciate how they skipped that in. 2w
AnnCrystal @GingerAntics 🆒📺💝. 2w

Since I‘ve been home the last 7 months, my mother has gotten me hooked on the TV show Rizzoli and Isles. When I found out it was based on a series of novels and short stories, I knew I had to read them. My mother says Maura Isles reminds me of her… it‘s better than Sheldon Cooper so I‘m down. lol
#TessGerritsen #TheSurgeon #RizzoliAndIsles #JaneRizzoli #MauraIsles

GingerAntics No Isles in this one and the narrator can‘t even say the name Ortiz. I‘m just chugging through so I can get to the next book with Isles in it. 2w

#LittensDressedInBlood #Day22 #PsychoKiller Warren Hoyt came instantly to mind for this prompt. A sadistic torture serial killer, he built up quite a tally in Boston until Detective Moore & his partner Jane Rizzoli finally take him down, but not until after he scars Jane for life, making him the star of her nightmares for years to come. A killer who enjoyed making the husband watch as he raped & murdered, psycho is not a strong enough descriptive.

MidnightBookGirl I love this series (although I didn't like Jane until book 2)! Hoyt is a beyond psycho, pure evil. 4y

Wow. Very strong for a first novel. At first I was surprised that Jane took a back seat in this book. It made it so much higher value when she starred at the end though. Still waiting to discover how many other show characters are from the books.

I‘ve shied away from her books because they sound a bit gruesome, but I‘m looking forward to seeing what she writes in this regard. IMHO it‘s long overdue, and it will ring kind of hollow if contemporary mystery writers don‘t address the current situation in future books. #justsaying

It's a pretty typical police procedural, but i like them when done competently. Also has a decent dose of feminism, though it's mostly Feminism 101 level stuff.

One of these days i need to find a police procedural series that centers regular everyday murders, not convoluted serial killings. No idea if that exists.

I'd forgotten this book has feminist commentary such as this bit. Also had a bit a couple pages ago on cops being control freaks in a way that pulls back the curtain a little on some of the seedier aspects of cop culture.

Lucky for me they have (at least) books 1-3. I own 4-5, 8-10 lol! Borrowed & downloaded!! This was a #bookoutofyourcomfortzone ...the storyline got way too real, and I had to put it down. A serial killer preys on single women and breaks through their bedroom window. Yup. No thanks! My imagination is vivid enough without worrying about people coming through my bedroom window.

I try to read a variety. Part of my job is recommending titles to people, so I like having a well-rounded reading experience. But, not this! #SelfImprovementSept

I wasn‘t as emotionally invested in the main characters as I would have liked, but I WAS invested in whodunit. The villain was sufficiently creepy to keep me reading. Honestly, the first book in a series can sometimes be problematic. The author hasn‘t quite gained their sea legs. I will definitely be giving the rest of the series a go. If anything, it‘s helping me get out of this Book Distraction Syndrome/slump BS. 😂🤣

Bookzombie I really like this series. It‘s been so long since I read the first, but you definitely get more invested in the characters with each book. 6y
AshleyHoss820 @Bookzombie I was certain that was going to be the case, so I definitely want to keep reading! First books tend to be a set-up book and the characters get more fleshed out as the series goes along. That‘s the hope anyway, right? 😊 I really did enjoy the story and the writing! 6y

#13books13weeks Book 3! The first of the Rizzoli and Isles series sans Maura Isles. This really introduces Jane Rizzoli and starts to develop her character. The mystery is well laid out and although there aren‘t a lot of clues to the real culprit (at least that I noticed). An intense last couple of chapters wrapped things up nicely. Overall a good start to the series.

4/5⭐️ - This book started out a little slow for me. You could tell the author did her research to make the book more realistic and believable but for me it didn‘t really pick up until we found out who the murderer was and what his motivation was. But defiantly a murder mystery/suspenseful thriller!

But now, similar killing is sighted. Someone is mimicking the killings. Or he‘s back to finish the survivor?? #thriller #series #suspense My 1st read by this author. Hmmmm... I'm not sure. It was a compulsive read. Gerritsen's characters aren't cardboard at all. There's real depth here, but it's so "women in peril." It never feels quite gratuitous, but it gets close. It's kinda nice to see the crusty, unlikeable cop be a woman. And Jane Rizzoli is not a pleasant woman. It's also interesting that it's the first in the Rizzoli and Isles series, but there's no Isles yet.
