Fourteen-year-old Miri lives on a mountain where her ancestors have quarried stone and lived in poverty for generations. Then just before winter's first snowfall, a delegation from the lowlands arrive with exciting news. The king's priests have divined that her small village is the home of the future princess. In a year's time, the prince will come himself and chose his bride from among the girls of the village. The king's ministers set up an academy on the mountain, where every girl of age will be sent to learn the skills of a princess. But there is no way Miri can prepare herself for what lies in store.

Really different than what I expected! I don‘t think the title conveys what this book is about. I wasn‘t expecting it to be like the goose girl but it was, and I loved that book. I listened to the audio, it has full cast narration which takes a bit of getting used to. But it made the scary parts REALLY scary. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nice book, it‘s a bit like The Selection from Kiera Cass but it has more interesting topics.

A good book with a terrible title. For me the lesson of this story was the life-changing differences made to a society when its girls are educated. Certainly this was above Beatrix‘s comprehension level, but it was a good book for us all to listen to in the car. A recommendation from Everyday Reading.

Far above the snow clouds, the moon must have been bright and full. Its light bled through the storm, marking each flake with a silvery luster and pouring a pale, peachy glow onto the mountain.

(author: Shannon Hale)

This MF follows a young mountain girl, Miri, who must attend a makeshift academy to prepare herself to become a suitable princess candidate, pitting herself against the other competitive, eligible girls and facing her own conflicting feelings about being chosen. It would work as an IR or LC, with detailed world-building and plenty of characterization to focus on.

kgarzon https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/princess-acade... This discussion guide has a great selection of questions for students to think in depth about.

EL Strategy 7: Show students how to use graphic organizers like semantic mapping and imaging (to optimize comprehension of text).

UDL Principle 9.3: Develop self-assessment and reflection (for independent reading).

DrSpalding Many primary students would immediately be engaged due to the main characters being princesses! Good choice. 4y

It must be a marvelous thing to feel so sure, to be able to meet someone‘s eyes and not look away. ❤️

I enjoyed this book, but it felt a bit juvenile to me. I read a lot of YA fiction, so it wasn‘t the age range of the characters as much as it was the writing and possibly the plot. The book is about educating a group of girls from a small mountain village so that one of them will be a suitable wife to the prince. Miri and the group of girls feel like real people and the prince is barely a presence in the book. I'll definitely finish the series!

So, I know I'm supposed to be reading Gentleman's Guide, but I was at the library with a cute girl and she was so excited! How could I say no?

Regardless of how I found it, I really liked this book! It had everything I love: magic, cool girls, and an unapologetic genius! If I had found it in middle school, I would have been obsessed. Hale has a way with description I can't explain. Mystical, beautiful, fullfilling. Will be reading Goose Girl!

So, after much time of thinking, I‘m going to start reading Princess Academy by Shannon Hale. The main reason is because it was my moms childhood favorite, and she wants me to read it. But, it has also just been sitting on my tbr pile for too long!!

They went all out on the production of this audiobook! Maybe because it is the first kid's book audiobook I have listened to? Every character had a different voice and there was music seperating the chapters. I usually only listen to nonfiction audiobooks, but the mulitple voices helped keep my focus and interest. Cute story, I would have loved it when I was a little girl. I wanted it to be more young adult than a kid's story. #overdrive

I give out books every Halloween in my parents' popular neighborhood. This year I started with 267 books (from thrift shops and such) and ended with about 30. Cheers to kids reading!

This book is amazing!! It's a great story of friendship among other things. The main character, Miri, is the perfect role model. She is determined, smart, and compassionate! I loved it!!

This! Book!
It is NOTHING like the cover or the blurb would lead you to believe. It's gritty (for middle grade), and fascinating, and so page turner-y. I SO recommend it, especially for this audible deal!

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I push this book into the hands of my 5th grade students. The boys sometimes give me the side eye, but every single kid that has read it has loved it! 7y
Rocki I adore this book. I can not get enough of it! Ever 6y

I read the first few chapters of Princess Academy, but had to put it down because I was not at all in the mood for it. I will pick it back up eventually! #shannonhale #kids #middlegrade #fairytale

Special shout out to this book that I was awarded in 6th grade for winning the school's Newberry Competition (6th graders got to compete for the most number of Newberry books read during the school year. There was a whole chart in the library and everything.) Your resident then-11 year old Litten smashed that competition in the face 🤗💅🏽

#FirstReadof2017! I finished this lovely audiobook on my lunch break and immediately grabbed the second one. The production was excellent and the story was good too. We follow Miri as she finds her place in her community, and it's lovely to start the year with a book that celebrates friendship.

I highly recommend listening to the full cast audiobook! The narrators are on point and you even get actual singing of the songs. Sherwood Smith liked the book, which was enough to get me to pick it up. And yup, enjoying it so far! For those of you with Hoopla, the full cast version is available there.

Miri and her Mount Eskel friends lead this sweet book about knowledge, prejudice, bravery, and confidence. It packed a ton into its pages, and I loved getting to know Miri and the girls. 💜🎼
