Lies, Damned Lies, and History
Lies, Damned Lies, and History | Jodi Taylor
At St Marys Institute of Historical Research, the historians dont just study the past, they revisit it. Behind the strait-laced faade of a conventional academic institution, the secret of time travel has been discovered and is being used for ground-breaking and daring historical research. The series takes the reader on a rollercoaster ride through history: from the destruction of Pompeii to the trenches of the First World War; from the Great Fire of London to the burning of the library at Alexandria; from Bronze Age Troy to the time of the dinosaurs Meanwhile, within at St Marys itself, there are power struggles, romances and intrigues worthy of a book in themselves.

While the 7th book in the series has just as much to love as previous installments, there are some consistent problems that are starting to get to me. First, too much is crammed into one book. I‘d prefer something shorter with less going on (maybe Wayward Children-style). Secondly, & most frustratingly, Taylor seems to struggle to embrace body positivity. Bigger bodies are beautiful, too. The repeated fat-shaming is becoming hard to overlook.👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: Still, the cast of characters is one of my favorite groups of *any* series. I can‘t bring myself to give any of these novels a so-so rating…especially not one that features King Arthur‘s sword, Stonehenge, and The Wild Hunt. A lot hinges on Book 8. 5mo
julesG I didn't have the impression it's fat-shaming. In most cases Max talks about herself, or repeats that the medical section thinks she should lose some weight for health reasons (bum knee, ankles,...). 5mo
monalyisha @julesG There‘s also the whole first bit about Caroline of Brunswick. 5mo
julesG Oh. Yes. I had forgotten about that part. You're right. That could have been done better. Especially from the POV of future historians. The contemporaries are allowed to be unkind, they don't know better. (I hope you understand what I mean) 5mo

I've read enough of these and the shorter stories now to feel a sense of camaraderie with the core group of characters. This installment was full of the fun OTT antics I've come to expect from St. Mary's.

My final book for #20in4 readathon and #Scarathlon2021 #TeamSlaughter. I needed a break from Halloween. Once again an expedition goes awry and the time-traveling historians fight to avoid disaster. I love this series. 6 more hours for a total of 13.5 for the Halloween readathon. I didn't meet my goal of 20 hours but I had fun trying. @Andrew65 @Clwojick

Andrew65 A brilliant time, well done. 👏👏👏🙌🥳🥳🥳🍾🥂😍👍😊 3y

1-17-21: My 7th finished book of 2021! In this 7th installment of the St. Mary‘s Chronicles, Max and the historians find themselves in more trouble than usual culminating in lots of changes for the team. Max must face the question:has she finally gone too far? Expect lots of time travel and laughs along the way. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #liesdamnedliesandhistory #joditaylor 👍🏼📖#️⃣7️⃣

In here is the usual bouncing about the timeline w/the St. Mary's crew. The coronation of George IV and subsequent humiliation of Caroline of Brunswick, getting caught up in Saxon onslaught with Arthur, Dux Bellorum, & the obtaining/stealing/returning of his sword, the downfall and redemption of St. Mary's, the obtainment of King John's "lost" treasure - & all of this with our MC Max growing larger & larger due to her pregnancy. Fun times!

Wow, that packed a lot of action into not a lot of chapters! Lovely to see where they got the name Matthew!

Two years ago, I started reading this fast, fun series about a group of historians who observe events in real time (yes, time travel!) but stopped right before this one. The prologue gave me pause but I should have had more faith in the author! It was the perfect book to tackle during my pandemic reading slump ❤️

The team from St. Mary‘s goes back to King Arthur‘s cave, King John‘s reign, and a disconcerting couple of days at Stonehenge!

Annl This is one of the books I have checked out from the library. 5y
Dogearedcopy @Annl This is the series that @Laalaleighh turned me on to a couple years ago! I won a giveaway from her and the first-in-series is one of the books she sent me ❤️ (edited) 5y
PatienceFortitude Watch out, later books in the series will absolutely wreck you 5y
Dogearedcopy @PatienceFortitude It‘s funny that you would mention that because I was already thinking about stopping here on a relatively happy note. That scene at Stonehenge made me anxious and then getting a glimpse of Book #8... It has a thing going on that, even in the best of times, I have trouble with. :-/ (edited) 5y
PatienceFortitude @Dogearedcopy I would stop reading here. The collections of short stories should be okay though 5y

Half way through this series and I'm at the point where I think this at the start of every misadventure

A little St. Mary‘s was just what the doctor ordered.

Bad decisions, snappy dialogue and history!

Time for another dose of the madness at St Mary‘s I think.

Laura317 This series is just such fun! I just finished Roman Holiday - a short from the St. Mary‘s gang. I “read” them on Audible. 6y

When your library holds come in... Out of Order! And it‘s a series. And you‘re really not sure if you have the restraint to wait for the other two books.

For the record, I‘ve read 1-4 plus some short stories. 7-8 are now waiting for me and 5-6 show no movement on the ILL system. And it‘s a long weekend. 🙃

DGRachel Oh, but they build on each other. You really need to read them in order. 😔 7y
Bostonmomx2 Ya that‘s why I never put multiple #‘s in a series on hold....that will ALWAYS happen to me 😬 7y
umbrellagirl @DGRachel I know! I really hope I can wait for the others. I don‘t want to ruin it. 7y

Every. Single. Book. Is a whirlwind of awesome. Time-traveling alternative history with a misfit heroine and her merry band of quirky colleagues. If you don't know these books, start with the very first entitled Just One Damned Thing After Another and thank me later. There'll be tears and joy and peril and wonder. The characters will make you fall in love with them & want to throttle them, all within one paragraph. Just go read all the books now.

The latest installment of The Chronicles of St. Mary's lives up to its predecessors. Each book in the series, which begins with Just One Damned Thing After Another, follows Max and her historian brethren as they travel through time "observing" history in real time. Taylor puts obvious research into the historical bits of the novels and the overall plotting is great. Late #recommendsday because I finished this last one this morning.

#funfridayphoto Favorite time travel books right now are these. So much fun. 😁

Bambolina_81 Ooh I like the sound of these! 8y
DGRachel @Bambolina_81 They are fun and Jodi Taylor has written a bunch of short stories available in ebook format, which are fantastic-under an hour each to read, so they're perfect for lunch breaks! I think she's going to publish the short stories in a collection early next year, too. 8y
Bambolina_81 Thanks @DGRachel I'll go and take a look 😊 8y

If you haven't read the Chronicles of St. Mary's you need to go grab the first book (read them in order!). This 7th full length installment is full of the chaotic fun we've come to expect and love, but also has edge of your seat suspense, fear, and drama, and an ending to make you laugh til you cry.
