Salt Lane
Salt Lane: DS Alexandra Cupidi: | William Shaw
18 posts | 12 read | 19 to read
'William Shaw is one of the great rising talents of UK crime fiction. This is his best book to date' Peter James 'Taut, terrifying and timely' Val McDermid 'William Shaw is a superb storyteller' Peter May No-one knew their names, the bodies found in the water. There are people here, in plain sight, that no-one ever notices at all. DS Alexandra Cupidi has done it again. She should have learnt to keep her big mouth shut, after the scandal that sent her packing - resentful teenager in tow - from the London Met to the lonely Kent coastline. Even murder looks different in this landscape of fens, ditches and stark beaches, shadowed by the towers of Dungeness power station. Murder looks a lot less pretty. The man drowned in the slurry pit had been herded there like an animal. He was North African, like many of the fruit pickers that work the fields. The more Cupidi discovers, the more she wants to ask - but these people are suspicious of questions. It will take an understanding of this strange place - its old ways and new crimes - to uncover the dark conspiracy behind the murder. Cupidi is not afraid to travel that road. But she should be. She should, by now, have learnt. Salt Lane is the first in the new DS Alexandra Cupidi series. With his trademark characterisation and flair for social commentary, William Shaw has crafted a crime novel for our time that grips you, mind and heart.

Catching up from last weekends reading and I'd enjoyed the birdwatcher so much I picked up the next in the series in which DS Culpidi takes centre stage. She is a single mum police officer transferred from te met to Kent police and is a great character as are those surrounding her. The plot features migrant workers and their exploitation by gang members. Definitely a series I will be going back to soon.

Sounds like another good series I should read! I guess I‘ll just have to live for 300 years to get through my TBR.

This is a police procedural set in Britain- I got this recommendation from @bookriot . Lots of intersecting plot lines and a MC that‘s somewhat impulsive. It looks like the first in a #series. I liked this and will look for the next ones! #LitsyAtoZ #letterS

Ugh I was reading this on the iPad (the one I share with my husband) & the library took it back. Now there‘s a hold!! 😱

Andrew65 Hate when that happens! 6y
Samplergal Oh man. That has happened to me more than I care to admit. I had two book club books that happened to this year. And I‘m still waiting to finish. I refuse to buy the book. It‘s the principle. 6y
Karkar Oh that sucks! 6y

Couldn‘t even deal with newsfeed these past few days so chose to read this instead. Strong policewoman with flaws and teenage daughter makes the move from London to Kent countryside, harsh coast with fens and much solitude. Multiple murders and exploitation of illegal immigrants pile on top of mother-daughter tensions as well as fitting into new force. Fragile peace and hope arrive so a much needed strong women antidote.

This was an excellent police procedural. DS Alex Cupidi is such an interesting and complex character as well as relationships. She‘s not perfect and doesn‘t try to be so. But, she is persistent and cares about the cases. I also quite liked her new Constable as well. The plot line just worked and evolved with her family relationships.

Stopped by courteous police officer yesterday letting me know my brake lights were out so here I sit getting repairs. Excellent opportunity to finish this book. Prior mystery, The Birdwatcher was 5⭐️. This one follows secondary character Alex Cupidi and mystery of 3 horribly drowned bodies in rural Kent. Illegal immigration, past peace movement hippies and junkies and old secrets make up this mystery. Only 3.5⭐️ but I will continue with the series

RadicalReader @Booksnchill no better way than to pass the time in long lines or weary waits than to pack some beloved books 6y
Booksnchill @RadicalReader always!!📚 6y
RadicalReader @Booksnchill would be lost without Books and the lovely Litsy littens!! So happy that libraries offer inter library loans so customers can enjoy all the books that they want to even when their library doesn‘t have them in stock. 6y

Excellent! Going to enjoy this series - looking forward to many more. A great book establishing the characters but an excellent political one too - taking on the anti-migrant and-immigration sentiment running rampant.

RaimeyGallant Sounds interesting. 6y

A bit of a treat for me as The Birdwatcher was a 5⭐️ read for me last year and I have been anxiously awaiting the next book from William Shaw- this one features Detective Sargeant Alexandra Cupidi in the Kentish countryside. Whiskey and I are enjoying the sun abd a bit of quiet before the fireworks tonight. #DogsOfLitsy
