Don't Worry, It Gets Worse
Don't Worry, It Gets Worse: One Twentysomething's (Mostly Failed) Attempts at Adulthood | Alida Nugent
12 posts | 20 read | 28 to read
Alida Nugent graduated college with a degree in one hand and a drink in the other, eager to trade in parties and all-nighters for the real world. But post-grad wasnt the glam life she imagined. Soon buried under a pile of bills, laundry, and three-dollar bottles of wine, it quickly became clear that she had no idea what she was doing. But hey, what twentysomething does? In Dont Worry, It Gets Worse, Nugent shares what it takes to make the awkward leap from undergrad to mature and responsible adult that definitely never eats peanut butter straight from the jar and considers it a meal. From trying to find an apartment on the black hole otherwise known as Craigslist to the creative maneuvering needed to pay off student loans and still enjoy happy hour, Nugent documents the formative moments of being a twentysomething with a little bit of snark and a lot of heart. Perfect for fans of HBO's Girls and Allie Brosh's Hyperbole and a Half, and based on her popular Tumblr blog The Frenemy, Dont Worry, It Gets Worse is a love note to boozin, bitchin ladies everywhere.

I felt like this book is between a pick and so-so. I‘m going with so-so because it didn‘t really have the best flow. It made me ache to go back to NYC though and made me sad that I have never lived there 😆

Spoiler 🚨 SHE'S RIGHT. It does get worse. But the lesson? Take it in stride because this is, well, our youth and we've got to make the best of it.

This read similar to Samantha Irby (snarky, young, self-deprecating, millienial-ish living in a city as a writer) and was just about as entertaining. I cringed (a lot) and nodded along at the ridiculous number of '90s references and felt a CRUSHING amount of nostalgia. Approach with caution. 😉

Jabberwocky Totall side note but your nails are great! 7y

I picked this up at the right time.... 2.5 more years in my 20s before I can hope to have accomplished enough to make me look like an adult and Alida's words are comforting. We're of the same generation, and like-minded in our humor also just SO MUCH YES 😍😏😁

Notafraidofwords I read this one and could totally relate. 7y
Bookcation74 Ohh YES and you should listen to the What Should I Read Next Podcast from 2 weeks ago when Rider Strong (aka Shawn) was the guest 😍 (edited) 7y
razmanda OMG YES. Shawn gave me all the tingly feelings. 😂 7y

mrozzz @razmanda that cutie.... as an adult, I like him with his short hair and beard just as much 😉 7y
mrozzz @Notafraidofwords Right?! Did you read her other book? 7y
mrozzz @Bookcation74 😲😲😲 yes I MUST 7y
Notafraidofwords @mrozzz yes I did. I enjoyed it overall. She writes about having a job in which all she does is countdown to lunch and I could totally relate to that. 7y
Notafraidofwords Shawn has a book podcast called literary disco lol 7y
mrozzz @Notafraidofwords what?!? Wow I need to get back into podcasts... I read her other book first and loved it. She's a riot. 7y

Listened to this on audiobook, trying to remember to do the audio thing more often because I do enjoy it, but for some reason I don't listen to them that often. This is basically a series of essays by a young woman fresh out of college trying to find her way in the world, and failing at it ( as we all do in our twenties). I'm wavering between 2 and 3 stars on this. It was funny at times and she has good instincts about life, so I'll give her that.

This book reflects how twentysomethings figure out how to "adult" in a shitty world. Written in her own fantastic point of view of her life, you can't just help but nod and agree to everything she has to say. I definitely recommend this book for fresh graduates that doesn't know what to do to move forward when life pulls you back. Kudos to Alina because she is all of us struggling through life.

Should I start to worry about not receiving my package yet? 😬 anyone else who hasn't received theirs? (I always worry about Norwegian customs for these things, being outside of the EU sucks) #summersantagoespostal

I have pretty high standards for humor/memoir type writing and this fell rather short. It had its moments where I could really relate and some rather funny stories, but I found myself dozing off through most of it.

I really enjoyed this book about finding your way in your 20's. I can relate since I'm in my twenties and have never felt more lost in my life & no, more advice is not what I need (thank you though!). But that's what I liked about this book, she doesn't give you much advice. You laugh at her and with her. You agree that retail is the worst. You nod when she saws that Shawn is better than Cory. I especially 😊at The Town reference. Love that 🎥.

brendanmleonard Wow, what a great title! 8y
Megabooks That was the story of my 20s lol! 😂😂 8y
Notafraidofwords @Ebooksandcooks I hear that from a lot of people. 8y
Notafraidofwords @brendanmleonard I love the title, mainly b/c it doesn't offer false hope. 8y

I'm going to go ahead and make this a pick because I would have really loved this book in my 20's. That being said I'm only 35 so I can still identify and remember a lot of those insecurities and crazy times that come with being young.

princess_dennie_pants Ugh being in my 20's again 😒 8y
Zelma Yeah, I'll pass on reliving my twenties. 😬 though early twenties was pretty damn fun. 8y
