Agnes Grey, the Tenant of Wildfell Hall (Revised)
Agnes Grey, the Tenant of Wildfell Hall (Revised) | Anne Bront
7 posts | 11 read | 13 to read
The only one-volume hardcover edition of the two uncommonly powerful novels written by the youngest of the famous BrontE sisters. Anne BrontE wrote these two fantastically successful novels just before her tragically early death, both of them in a much more grittily realistic mode than the more romantic ones favored by her sisters. "Agnes Grey, "the story of a governess working for disdainful and cruel employers, is a wrenching account of the desperate straits faced by Victorian women without money or husband. "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall "tells a story that was shocking for its time: a woman leaves her alcoholic and abusive husband in order to protect their young son and must live in hiding to prevent the law from taking her child away from her. These novels have become classics not only by dint of the subtle and ironic force of Anne BrontE's prose but because of the passionate indictments of social injustice that animate them.

My first Anne Brontë novel. I liked the headstrong main character and could understand how she made her disastrous first marriage...but I never warmed up to Mr. Markham. I can see how this very forward thinking book would have made waves in its time. Definitely interesting to read and recognize what has and what has not changed in our expectations in the behavior of men and women. #ClassicsChallenge2020

Reviewsbylola This is a Bronte I still need to read. 4y
BiblioLitten @Reviewsbylola I wanted to read this one but settled on Agnes Grey. I definitely plan to read this one. 4y
Ruthiella @Reviewsbylola It‘s was a good read for sure. I hope you enjoy it when you get to it. 😀 4y
Ruthiella @BiblioLitten I will read Agnes Grey one of these days for sure. I also need to sample at least one other book by Charlotte since I have only read Jane Eyre. 😀 4y

Dec was an almost non reading month for me!! Well except for maybe recipes and nutrition labels on foods!! My grown Kids have been in town for 1/2 Dec. Only 2 serial readers and 1 & 1/2 audio & 1/2 hardback!! But it's been a great month for family.

drokka Every book counts 🙂 Now if only there were ISBNs on food labels 7y

Laalaleighh @BookBerries you're welcome! If you're interested in the brontes at all, it's fascinating. (I didn't even register the romance in it, I was too obsessed with the Bronte storyline) Hope you like it! 8y
