In the next Ruth Galloway mystery, a vision of the Virgin Mary foreshadows a string of cold-blooded murders, revealing a dark current of religious fanaticism in an old medieval town. Known as England s Nazareth, the medieval town of Little Walsingham is famous for religious apparitions. So when Ruth Galloway s druid friend Cathbad sees a woman in a white dress and a dark blue cloak standing alone in the local cemetery one night, he takes her as a vision of the Virgin Mary. But then a woman wrapped in blue cloth is found dead the next day, and Ruth s old friend Hilary, an Anglican priest, receives a series of hateful, threatening letters. Could these crimes be connected? When one of Hilary s fellow female priests is murdered just before Little Walsingham s annual Good Friday Passion Play, Ruth, Cathbad, and DCI Harry Nelson must team up to find the killer before he strikes again."

I still like characters and I think they're the best part in the series. But somehow I was hoping to see more interaction between them.

This felt a bit dry, this was again a cozy mystery so I wasn't expecting to have thrilling scenes. But I think I was hoping to get more of the characters.

I finished this at weekend and my first for the
#jubilantjuly @Andrew65 challenge. I should finish 2 more bks hopefully.
In Ruth's 8th outing the story is set in Walsingham as a woman's body is discovered dressed in blue cloak and white dress. As the investigation delves into the religious community an old friend of Ruth, now a female priest asks for help. As always an easy read , usual formula, enjoyable characters 3*.

Andrew65 A good series 👏👏👏 2y

This story revolves around religious fanaticism and the damage that it can cause. Ruth‘s friend Hilary, from college, calls on Ruth for help, and reveals a string of threatening letters that she has received. Ruth gets Nelson involved, and he sees a possible connection with several murders that have occurred in the area of a place of religious pilgrimage. Ghostly apparitions(?), cults, icons, confusion. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is book 8 in the Ruth Galloway mysteries series. I love this series and it's just keeps getting better! I am definitely caught up in the lives of the characters. The author has done a fantastic job with keeping the reader interested. Normally I lose interest in a series by the 5th or 6th book, not here. Looking forward to book 9. 4.5 ⭐

Mehso-so

I'm trying to remember what the other murder mystery I read set in and around Walsingham was called, which was more sympathetic to the devotees there. This was a good mystery, with some good misleading clues, but had more of an outsider's rather condescending viewpoint to the people involved, which brings it down to a so-so. Also what is the point of Ruth being an archaeologist, if there's no archaeology?

Recently needed some light reading and re-read this one in Elly Griffith‘s Ruth Galloway series. Ruth is smart and sassy as ever, Nelson is by turns endearing and irritating, and Cathbad, as always, is fabulous. Michelle on the other hand? Whiny, entitled, and selfish. Dislike her more in every book.

eanderson I need to catch up on this series! 5y

Book 8 in the series set in the beautiful Walsingham. Another interesting mystery for the gang and another big secret is finally revealed. This wasnt my favourite of the series but it was still a really good read. Of course living in Norfolk myself means that I love reading about areas I know. Cathbad is still my favourite character in these but I do have a soft spot for Nelson.

emmaturi I love this series, waiting to get my hands on the latest one! 6y

Another excellent installment in the Ruth Galloway series. There‘s less archaeology in this book, but still a fair amount of history and an interesting religious component. As usual, I‘m going to have to restrain myself from immediately starting the next book. I want to spread out the enjoyment.

LiteraryinPA I do that too! I‘ve read the first 3 books but have spread them out over maybe 6 months. It‘s about time for me to borrow the 4th! 6y
Crazeedi I've not heard of this series! Looks good!! 6y
Lynnsoprano @Crazeedi A friend in England introduced me to the series when we visited a year and a half ago, and I bought the first book in a bookstore in Cambridge. I‘ve enjoyed all of them so far. 6y

Another great Ruth Galloway mystery. The case was more simple than some of the previous ones, which was a nice change of pace. The personal storylines are even more complicated. A fun fact about this is that a woman named Jan and her search dog Barney make cameos because a real person won the privilege of being in the book at a charity auction. I loved that!

This was another brilliant addition to the Ruth Galloway series. The main stat of this book is mainly Nelson but this doesn't spoil the story at all. As always I am left waiting for the next volume.

Just starting this one . . . Then on to find a new series 😢. I think I may give Louise Penny another try. I read the first one but just didn't feel compelled to read anymore at the time. It does seem that others enjoy Penny's characters as I do Griffiths's.

Godmotherx5 I have the 1st Griffiths' book on my TBR. I read that first Louise Penny & it was ok. Cute but not compelling. 8y
Ms.Story @Godmotherx5 To be honest, I wasn't entirely sold in the Ruth Galloway series after reading just the first one, but I gave the second one a go and began to really connect with the characters! I hope you enjoy their adventures! ☺ 8y
Beckys_Books I didn't read past Louise Penny's first Inspector Gamache either. Not sure why, I just wasn't compelled to read more. 8y
See All 7 Comments
mllemay I've read the first two Louise Penny mysteries and still don't feel that compelled to continue the series, tbh. I'll probably read the third one at some point, in case the third time really is the charm. However, the second Griffiths book is waiting for me at the library and I'm excited for that one! 8y
melbeautyandbooks @godmotherx5 @brittanysbookshelf @beckys-books I didn't read past the first of Louise Penny's either. It was just OK for me. I also didn't read past the first one of the Ruth Galloway series either. I didn't connect with Ruth and that ending just seems like a clusterf$&@. 8y
Dragon I started Louise Penny in the middle and went back to read the first one. Maybe that's why I liked it as there's more "angst" in later stories. 8y
kspenmoll Penny's series gets better with each book. Love both series, though quite different. 8y

☠My latest read.. Little Walsingham, a blue robed body of a model is found strangled. Forensic archeologist, Ruth Galloway, becomes involved in a the murder. Is it religious fervor gone wrong or something more deeply personal? I'm a big Ruth Galloway fan- this is a stellar addition to the series!

Very good book! Ruth Galloway is one of my favorite female protagonists. The mystery is always good, but I think I keep reading them to find out what's going on in the characters lives. I'm sad now that I'll have to wait for awhile to find out what comes next!

Decent mystery, though this series isn't offering much new character development and the plot seems strained and a bit tired. I still love Ruth Galloway, strong single mom archaeologist & lecturer, but she's not given much to do here. For committed Griffiths fans only.

Jess_Read_This Great review! I am a long time Ruth Galloway fan and I could see the series taking that direction when I read the previous one. Lovely cover though! 8y

JulieAnn This was a great book. I liked that there were small mentions of random pop culture references like Bastille. I get so caught up in reading older mystery novels that I often miss modern, everyday life. It was a compelling story and very focused on Nelson. I definitely cannot wait for the next book! 9y
