I really liked this dark little tale. Trigger warning for if you don‘t like snakes - they feature quite a lot.

Reviews of this are pretty mixed, but I flew through it. If you don‘t like snakes, I would proceed with caution in reading this as they figure pretty heavily. 5🌟

The village lives in fear for every one of their daughters due to a curse that was cast upon them from the young girl they outcasted. With her family‘s fear of demon position and the sight of snakes, it‘s up to Milla to discover to source of this curse and save the girls who have been locked away for so many years.

I can definitely see why it wouldn't appeal to some with it's pacing alone. Even the traveling by the characters is done at a slow pace but it's steady and the book is under 300 pages. The characters, the curse and the weird creepy ominous social atmosphere were just incredibly interesting. Also, I'm kinda terrified of snakes but I found them more interesting and mythical in this book.

I'm just so curious about this and have heard nothing of it.

I finished this book earlier today, and I'm still wandering around in a haze. I'll try to post a review tomorrow once my brain has settled. ❤

I think this is now an auto-buy author.

Her books feel like the original fairy tales where there's danger in the woods, but if you face it with courage, you'll defeat it and get your - not necessarily - happy ending, but the one that's right for you.

And her stories are full of strong girls and even if other people look at them strangely or with fear of their ideas or behavior, they're strong in spirit and find a way to overcome.

I've only read the prologue so far but I'm already all in. 🐍 Yes, let's do this.

IT‘S NEW BOOK DAY! Here are some of today‘s new books (with apologies to Peternelle van Arsdale, whose wonderful book is trapped under a kitten.) And there‘s a whole bunch more out now, including a couple I‘m really excited about but don‘t have physical copies to show you, including GOLDEN STATE by Ben H. Winters, MIRACULUM by Steph Post, BOOKENDS by Michael Chabon, and THE VANISHING STAIR by Maureen Johnson. What are you excited about? 📚❤️📚

I have mixed feelings. Demon book? Yes. Awesome female character standing up without being the typical female protagonist of late? Yes. But the “demons” symptoms are a little too close to mental illness to be comfortable. Also the ending was a bit weak.
Rating: 3ish stars.

It‘s lovely, but seems sad.

I thoroughly enjoyed van Arsdale‘s second novel! It‘s a bit Medusa inspired (this little bookworm is the closest thing to a snake I have on my tree! 😊) and the fairytale writing style is simply superb!! This one will fulfill a lot of the prompts I have seen for various 2019 reading challenges so look for it when it‘s out one month from today!!

This beautiful arc has captivated me...
Young Milla‘s world consists entirely of the farm she has lived on for her whole life, and her small family. Her world opens up when young Iris comes to live with them; it all changes Iris is possessed by a demon, just like many other girls in the village.
Inspired by the myth of Medusa, this book has a powerful female voice, one of girls who long to be heard and understood. It‘s haunting.
