Phoebe and Her Unicorn (Phoebe and Her Unicorn Series Book 1)
Phoebe and Her Unicorn (Phoebe and Her Unicorn Series Book 1) | Dana Simpson
15 posts | 23 read | 3 to read
"Phoebe is a remarkably real little girl, as bright and imaginative as Bill Watterson's Calvin, as touchingly vulnerable as Charles Schulz's Charlie Brown. And if these strike you as big names to conjure with, I'll go further and state for the record that in my opinion Heavenly Nostrils is nothing less than the best comic strip to come along since Calvin and Hobbes. Simpson is that good, and that original."--Peter S. Beagle, author of The Last Unicorn, from the Introduction A boy and his dog . . . a girl and her . . . unicorn? It all started when a girl named Phoebe skipped a rock across a pond and accidentally hit a unicorn in the face. Improbably, this led to Phoebe being granted one wish, and she used it to make the unicorn, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, her obligational best friend. But can a vain mythical beast and a nine-year-old daydreamer really forge a connection? Indeed they can, and that's how Phoebe and Her Unicorn unfolds. This beautifully drawn comic strip follows the unlikely friendship between a somewhat awkward girl and the magic unicorn who gradually shows her just how special she really is. Through hilarious adventures where Phoebe gets to bask in Marigold's "awesomeness," the friends also come to acknowledge that they had been lonely before they met and truly appreciate the bond they now share.

I don‘t know whether Dana Simpson is making specific callbacks to Ozy & Millie (I seem to recall Millie eating Sugar Kabooms) or if it‘s just that her style, especially for this similar-aged-and-imaginative character, is the same, but either way I‘m here for it! Also see: Dakota saying “guh” 😂

Finally reading the Phoebe and her Unicorn comics. I just thought I‘d be enjoying some fun, silly comics—I didn‘t expect an introduction from the greatest of unicorn novelists himself! 😍

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ More adventures with Phoebe and Marigold Heavenly Nostrils. Love their sweet and funny friendship! Always worthwhile lessons among the silliness. Always lots of sparkles.

Dipping my toe back into Litsy after a few months away. Stress and anxiety resulted in not much reading. Focused on listening to music during quarantine. Work has been a whole different brand of anxiety and challenges, but at least I‘m reading again. This was a reread and palate cleanser from my last doorstopper read. Missed you all and glad to be back!

Amiable Welcome back! I hear you on the lack of reading over the past few months. Hope you are feeling a bit more relaxed and centered now. 4y
ChasingOm Welcome back! Music has been helping me a lot as well. ❤️ 4y
kspenmoll So glad to have you return! It has been tough & challenging living with the unknown... Focusing has been tough; often I have resorted to escapist books when real life becomes untenable. Love to you!!! 4y

On top of quarantine and Covid anxiety, my divorce has been slowly plugging along. It‘s rough. But thankfully, reading has commenced again! 4y
SamanthaMarie I hope you are able to extend yourself a lot of kindness and love and gentle care. And Litsy is always here with open arms ♡ 4y

This was super cute 😋
I would like my own unicorn best friend please! 🦄

I wanted to finish 2 books for the readathon which I had already started (River Marked and Influential Magic) so this is an extra one on top of those 🥳 and I still have several days to go!

I am going to restart The Good, The Bad, and The Undead next, and maybe hunt down another short book so at least one more is finished this month :)

3.5/5⭐ Cute and fun. The side one-pagers aren't clearly marked, so they become a jarring intrusion on the story arcs.

Personally I didnt enjoy thos book all that much. For a 3rd or 4th grade girl, I can see them enjoying it greatly. I did however like all of the vocabulary that is used throughout the stoy.
