I've always found Bruce Perry and inspiring figure in the world of developmental and early childhood trauma. Working with teenagers with SEBW and ACEs means that reading a book like this helps me recentre and refocus my approaches to support them through a trauma focused lens. A hard read because it outlines some heartbreaking stories but amazingly hopeful and informative too.

Anyone who has/works with/interacts with/was once a child should read this book.

Dr Bruce Perry‘s Neurosequential Model is laid out with heart-breaking stories of children who have faced trauma. Not for the faint at heart, but worth pushing through. The first 4 years of a child‘s life are do instrumental in healthy brain development that trauma through these first years can literally derail their entire lives.

This book is great. It is a combination of stories, point of view, and research-based information from a mental health professional.
Bruce Perry is legit, and this was an awesome read for me.
If you are looking to gain a better understanding of trauma, childhood development, and destigmatizing mental health, this is definitely one to add to your stack.

This was not an easy book to the read, but I read it because I work with teenagers. I think it's a useful read for those who work with kids. It provides more signs to look for to realize when they need help so I can then refer them to the professionals. It is quite challenging to get through though just because of the subject matter.

A book considering the impact of trauma on children; a difficult but insightful book.

5280reader Our school district is being trained in his work to support all students and adults with regulation strategies and understanding our stress response system. While he presents severe cases of trauma in this book, everyone can benefit learning about the neurosequential model he presents. 4y
Tomigirl44 @5280reader exactly! I was a bit nervous before reading it, thinking it was going to be horribly dark & depressing, but I found it inspiring & hopeful, & it helped me understand why some people are the way they are. It astonished me that until this time psych experts hadn‘t thought about or studied the impact of trauma on children. It‘s such a no-brainer for me. It was required for my doctoral program (on leadership); not sure why but grateful. 4y

I found this book really interesting. It talks about Bruce Perry's work with children who have severe behavioral, emotional, or learning difficulties that have endured severe trauma. He created a specific type of therapy known as the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT.) I started reading this for a trauma class back in April, and slowly chipped away at it until mid-November.

Scochrane26 I have this & have been intending to read it for a long time. Will get to it eventually. 4y

An important book about how trauma impacts child development and more specifically the brain. The authors use one case per chapter to discuss behaviors, long term ramifications, and the resiliency of humans. The examples are fascinating: Branch Davidian survivors, Russian orphans, and yes, a boy who was raised as a dog. You‘ll be thankful for child psychiatrists providing treatment to the children who deserve so much better from their families.

I had originally requested this back in February in hopes that it could give me more insight in how to better help some of my more challenging students. Due to Covid I am just now getting this. Those students may have moved on but I have faith that this will better prepare me for those still yet to come. A teacher never stops learning.

How do you explore relationships in a world that is going to have television, that will include email, artificially extended days because of electric lights, and automobiles, airplanes, psychoactive drugs, plastic surgery...? How do we deal with the presence of all those things and create a world that...enhances our connections to others rather than ignores or disrupts them?”

This book was heartbreaking, informative, enlightening, and hopeful all at the same time. Even if you're not a psychology nerd or around children much, this is still a very worth-while read.

Winston was disappointed when he found out someone had already used the title he wanted for his memoir. He thinks he's a real boy, and insinuating he's a dog is just down right insulting. 🤣🐶

Day 5 of the sunburn, and I had to grab some essentials from the store. ? Thank you to those of you who recommended the "blue gel" and lidocaine. Freaking game changer! I feel like I'm in heaven right now.

Also, I feel like I shouldn't say that this is a good book because of the nature of it, but the book is really interesting and well written. It's a child psychologist who wrote about various traumatized children that he helped.

GingerAntics Be careful with the lidocaine. It can actually irritate skin. 5y

AlaMich I feel for you. I‘ve had two serious sunburns in my life, both times with sun poisoning (nausea, blisters...). It‘s a special slice of hell. 🔥 5y

Enlightening look on child development and the effects of trauma, especially the negative, later in adolescence and adulthood. I would highly recommend for those interested in mental disorders or destructive psychological behavior.

An inspiring read providing wonderful insight into the dynamic work with children and families who experience trauma. Dr. Perry's reflective stance on the cases presented highlights his incredible passion for bringing professionals together and his sensitivity to the children in his care. The discussion around the importance of community to the very survival and evolution of the human race is poignant in the increasing isolation we live in.
