When 12-year-old Bud Caldwell sets out on a journey across the state of Michigan in hopes of finding his father in Bud, Not Buddy, he knows he can handle *anything* as long as he has his suitcase of special things. I felt that same confidence (and excitement!) embarking on this week‘s episode of my book pod, because I had bestselling author and YA superstar Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé as my guest! Tune in at the link in my bio.

Such a good book. I can see why this is a hit with kids that usually don't like to read. It's a great one to recommend to those middle school aged kids who never can find a book that interests them. I really enjoyed Bud's personality and his moxie. An entertaining and heartwarming read.

Great middle grade book about an orphaned boy determined to find his father. Bud takes it upon himself to make his life better and escape the terrible home he's placed in after his mother's death. This book is full of heart and I loved following Bud in hopes he'd find happiness. 💚

I read this because I‘m helping my 10 year old granddaughter with a project about it. Bud‘s mom died when he was six and now he‘s 10 and wondering who his dad is. He thinks Momma left some clues and he starts hunting, even though it‘s a big risk. It‘s 1936 and the Great Depression. He‘s a little black boy who shouldn‘t be wandering. And I loved following his adventure!

Bud, Not Buddy is a great work of historical fiction. I had to read this book in Elementary school and I would say that it still holds up as an excellent example of historical fiction rereading it many years later. This book is based on a tough time in America, the Great Depression, and not only that, our protagonist is an African American boy in a time riddled with oppression. This inspirational story is great for kids 3rd grade and higher.

Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis is a 2000 Newberry Medal Award Recipient. This HF is about a ten year old boy named Bud. He is on the run after losing his mother to find his father, but he runs into a few challenges along the way. I would use this book as a PR or an IR. #UCFLAE3414SU19

Kendylleonard https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Browse/Search:bud%20not%20buddy%20activities The resource I found has students create character maps and comics that recreate the story. This will be a fun and interactive way to address some of the most important parts of the story. This aligns with UDL 6.3 and ESOL strategy 44. (edited) 5y

I really enjoyed reading the HF called Bud, Not Buddy. This book is very inspirational and leaves readers with a great message to never give up no matter the circumstances. The book focuses on the story of an African American boy during the time of the great depression and his struggles and journey on finding his father.

fquadri The boy is resilient and strong willed and is determined to find his father no matter what which encourages students to stay positive and never give up. This book has won many awards such as the Newberry and Coretta Scott King award. LC is a good activity for the book so that students can talk about what they learned every week. 5y
fquadri EL strategy 10 can be used for this book so that students can think pair and share with their fellow LC members. UDL strategy 9.1 can help students be motivated through learning about the experiences of the main character Bud. 5y
fquadri This website has a video which shows the author of this book Christopher Paul Curtis and his journey on becoming a writer and why he write the book Bud, not Buddy.

Bud Not Buddy is a classic story by Christopher Paul Lee that I read when I was in middle school. This book won a number of awards, such as a Newbery Medal and a Coretta Scott King Award. This is a story about a boy named Bud who is searching for his father, who he has never met before. His mother died and left behind one clue to find him. This story is goes through the rough times of the Great Depression, making it a (HF) story.

WoodsKatie This story can be used as LC, AS, or IR. This book satisfies UDL Guideline 3.1 as well as ESOL strategies 4 and 6. On the author‘s website, there are a TON of resources from different locations such as Scholastic, which has a teacher resource to use Bud Not Buddy in the classroom. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/big-ideas-bud-... #LAE3414sp19 6y

Bud, Not Buddy is a HF children's novel written by Christopher Paul Curtis. The book received the Newbery Medal for excellence in American children's literature. This book tells the story of a 10 y/o African American boy and his quest to find his father during the Great Depression. The novel begins in Flint, Michigan, at “the Home,” where Bud and other orphaned children wait to be placed into foster care. This will be Bud's third foster family.

kkimmelman I would use this book for a LC group. I would recommend the UDL 5.1 and 5.2 strategies in order to promote communication within the groups. I also would recommend ESOL 16 would be beneficial in order to promote a variety of learning within groups: speaking, listening, and writing. This lesson (http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/press-conference-buddy-303.html) would be useful to lead discussions. #LAE3414sp19 6y

Bud, Not Buddy is a HF (historical fiction) novel written by Christopher Paul Curtis. This book is a Newbery award winner and something I would use in my class as a LC (Literature Circle). This book is about a young boy named Bud who lives in Flint, Michigan in 1963. His mother has passed away and he is struggling because he has escaped his foster home, and does not want to return to the “Home”, the orphanage. His mother has left him with five ⬇️

JessicaC flyers, all containing pictures of the same man. Because Bud has never met his father, he is convinced that the man in these photos is his father. He decides that he will be going to figure out where exactly his father is and why these pamphlets used to make his mother upset. He sets out only to finally meet the man he is looking for. He discovers that his prediction in regards to how he is related to this man is not what he had in mind. 7y
JessicaC A lesson I would use in my classroom for this book is https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Bud-Not-Buddy-Suitcase-Project-17167.... It is a suitcase project in which students will be creating a suitcase, just as the one that Bud carries through his journey. The UDL I would use is 1.3 offering alternatives for visual information, 2.1 clarifying vocabulary and symbols. This activity provides the students with the opportunity to create a ⬇️ (edited) 7y
JessicaC visual in which they can relate to Bud during the story and the impact of each personal item that he carries close to his heart. This is a great book and children will really be engaged with all of the emotion and sacrifices Bud is making. 7y
