#OnThisDay in 1719 Robinson Crusoe was published. A hallmark of realistic fiction, and (possibly) one of the first English novels, Crusoe introduced the "Man (or Girl) Friday" to the English language. Originally published as a tale written by Crusoe himself, many mistook it for a true travelogue. Incredibly popular from the moment of publication, four editions were published before the end of 1719 #HistoryGetsLIT

Finally finished this book for my next MA module. I found some aspects fascinating but I hated the character of Robinson Crusoe. I know he's a product of his time but he was arrogant, racist and thought he was superior to every other character he came across!

For 24 years Robinson Crusoe thought he was alone on the island he was shipwrecked on, until he stumbled across another person...

It was said #robinsoncrusoe written by #danieldefoe was inspired by Alexander Selkirk who after being marooned on an island spent more than four years on that island. Many have debunked the theory that Crusoe is Selkirk as the two had different stories. Still Crusoe story can be inspired by the story of Selkirk and Defoe made it into his own. My first read on Serial Reader. Exciting and suspenseful at times. But a so-so overall. I kept imagining a reality show challenge when Robinson Crusoe was problem solving on the island.

I've just discovered this podcast (recommended by books on the nightstand) and it is so fantastic! If you love bookish podcasts this is my new favourite!
