The Bucolic Plague
The Bucolic Plague: How Two Manhattanites Became Gentlemen Farmers: An Unconventional Memoir | Josh Kilmer-Purcell
10 posts | 16 read | 23 to read
What happens when two New Yorkers (one an exdrag queen) do the unthinkable: start over, have a herd of kids, and get a little dirty? Find out in this riotous and moving true tale of goats, mud, and a centuries-old mansion in rustic upstate New Yorkthe new memoir by Josh Kilmer-Purcell, author of the New York Times bestseller I Am Not Myself These Days. A happy series of accidents and a doughnut-laden escape upstate take Josh and his partner, Brent, to the doorstep of the magnificent (and fabulously for sale) Beekman Mansion. One hour and one tour later, they have begun their transformation from uptight urbanites into the two-hundred-year-old-mansion-owning Beekman Boys. Suddenly, Josha full-time New Yorker with a successful advertising careerand Brent are weekend farmers, surrounded by nature's bounty and an eclectic cast: roosters who double as a wedding cover band; Bubby, the bionic cat; and a herd of eighty-eight goats, courtesy of their new caretaker, Farmer John. And soon, a fledgling business, born of a gift of handmade goat-milk soap, blossoms into a brand, Beekman 1802. The Bucolic Plague is tart and sweet, touching and laugh out loud funny, a story about approaching middle age, being in a long-term relationship, realizing the city no longer feeds you in the same way it used to, and finding new depths of love and commitment wherever you live.

Day 2 - #Bucolic #BeautifulWords

bucolic. As an adjective, bucolic refers to an ideal country life that many yearn for. ... A bucolic could be a short poem about pastoral (cow) life or a country person, who is stereotyped as a cowherd. Used as an adjective, bucolic can refer to an idealized rural life (think life with cows) or to herdsmen (more cows).

I really enjoy reading Josh Kilmer-Purcell's memoirs. He's funny, witty, observant, and says what he thinks. This one is all that, with a little bit of history and inspiration mixed in.

I just started this book, and so far it does not disappoint! I just finished reading his book I Am Not Myself These Days, and I like both his writing style and his sense of humor. This is his post-Aquadisiac the drag queen memoir about when he and his husband Brent bought a farm in upstate New York.

britt_brooke I love Kilmer-Purcell! (edited) 5y

Or How two Manhattanites became Gentlemen Farmers. This book is less about farming and more about that dream of changing your life and how difficult it is, particularly when still have to work at your day job while doing it. It is an honest and engaging memoir. Well written and a good read.

I read his first 2 memoirs before we ever moved to Wisconsin (we've since moved from there) and it turned out the "rural Wisconsin" town he speaks of was only about 20 miles from us. Great read!!
