Valencia and Valentine
Valencia and Valentine | Suzy Krause
24 posts | 20 read | 11 to read
For readers of Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine, debut author Suzy Krause delivers a quirky, colorful story about love, loss, second chances, and what it means to truly live. Valencia, a timid debt collector with crippling OCD, is afraid of many things, but the two that scare her most are flying and turning thirty-five. To confront those fears, Valencia's therapist suggests that she fly somewhere--anywhere--before her upcoming birthday. And as Valencia begins a telephone romance with a man from New York, she suddenly has a destination in mind. There's only one problem--he might not actually exist. Mrs. Valentine is an eccentric old woman desperate for company, be it from neighbors, telemarketers, or even the funeral director (when you're her age, you go to a lot of funerals). So she's thrilled when the new cleaning girl provides a listening ear for her life's story--a tale of storybook love and incredible adventures around the world with her husband before his mysterious and sudden disappearance. The stories of Valencia and Mrs. Valentine may at first appear to have nothing in common...but then again, nothing in life is as straightforward as it seems.

Have you read #valenciaandvalentine? I loved this book! It was both heartfelt and charming while giving an honest depiction of living with ocd/intrusive thoughts. With beautiful prose and a twist ending, this story will stay with you long after you finish it. 💙✨📚

My book for #readwithmrbook, #byAboutWithDisability. The MC has OCD. If you‘re reading for big twists, you might be disappointed, but it‘s a lovely character portrait and a light, hopeful, read, which some of us need right now. @MrBook

Krause's debut is not without issues. Not only did it take a while to get into the story, but I struggled with both characters. I love quirky characters, but Valencia was exhausting. Surprisingly this book was a bit dark and depressing, I was expecting more of a feel-good story rather than a character study. But please don't let this review sway you away from reading it, Krause's writing is quite good, I just don't think the book was for me.

I really enjoyed my time with the characters in this book, especially Mrs. Valentine. I get the initial comparison to Eleanor Oliphant, with the quirkiness of the characters. While this book was not as well written as Eleanor, it was still a good story. I didn‘t see where the author was going until she wanted me to. Sweet, tugs at the heart strings, easy to read...perfect for the summer. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

My Saturday night. My youngest is settled in with a book, too. ❤️ Loving this book. Sometimes we read books at exactly the right time. Mrs. Valentine‘s description of aging has me feeling even more empathy for my Dad, as he transitions from independent living to assisted living. Because of ability, her world is squeezing in around her. “Mrs. Valentine has traded in her spot at the community garden for a single basil plant on her windowsill.” ❤️

I will be honest, for the first third of this book I was regretting my decision to read it at all. I couldn't get into it, but decided to stick it out for obligations sake, and boy am I glad that I did. By the end I was in absolute tears. What started as hectic ended as a heartbreaking, beautiful portrait of the mind. In retrospect I'm sure that was by design. This book is sad and hopeful and intelligent and melancholy.

A #netgalley ARC

Blueroseis That's the reason I try not to bail from books. You never know what may occur on the next Page. 5y
xxjenadanxx @Blueroseis very true! It‘s super rare that I totally bail on a book, the only one I can remember doing so with was The Night Circus. 5y

#NetGalley #MoreMehThanYeah This book suffered from an over eager debut author trying to hard to be crafty. Instead of creating memorable characters she wrote caricatures. And the plot was super convoluted and where the author again thought she was being sneaky, the plot holes and big reveals were shown VERY early on!!! It‘s not a total Pan but only 2 stars for me. #BirthdayBouquet From my mom & dad 🥰🥰🥰

Cinfhen @BarbaraBB skip it!!!! 5y

#NetGalley #ARC I‘m not very far into this book but it‘s not really tickling the funny bone. I‘m feeling a little underwhelmed at the moment. I‘ve seen some good reviews so hoping it picks up soon.

Not fantastic, but not too shabby. It took me a few chapters to get into this one, but I did end up getting invested and enjoying it.

Also - I predicted the twist but not in its entirety 😊

5 ⭐️

Just such an amazing book. One of those that seems simply entertaining but as you continue, you are forced to consider how you view what is real and true about yourself, your relationships, and your view of the world. Valencia and Ms. Valentine will carve themselves a spot in your heart and fill a need you never knew you had. ❤️❤️❤️

BarbaraBB Five stars? Coming from you that means a lot. I‘ll stack it! 6y
cathysaid @BarbaraBB 🤣🤣 I am a bit of a curmudgeon about the stars, aren‘t I? This one hit just right. Hope you like. I must be getting soft...that‘s two in five days! (edited) 6y

cathysaid @sprainedbrain Mine as well! It‘s really good...kind of a cross between Lillian Boxfish Takes A Walk and Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine. (edited) 6y

I got this book last month as part of the Amazon first reads & started it while I was on vacation. I finished it yesterday & even now I am still not sure how i feel about it. At the beginning it seems like the tale of 2 different women, one old & one young. After going back and forth between the 2 and the twist near the end, I am still not sure what was real and what wasn‘t. Overall, not terrible but not something I can wholeheartedly recommend.

I am excited for this book. I am a Prime member on Amazon and I got to choose the book I wanted to read as the first pick and this one won me over. This is Suzy Krause's debut novel, and it hits the shelves June 1st. I cannot wait to share my review of the book with you guys as soon as it's released, stay tuned.
