Night Train to Memphis
Night Train to Memphis | Elizabeth Peters
12 posts | 12 read | 9 to read
An assistant curator of Munich's National Museum, Vicky Bliss is no expert on Egypt, but she does have a Ph.D. in solving crimes. So when an intelligence agency offers her a luxury Nile cruise if she'll help solve a murder and stop a heist of Egyptian antiquities, all 5'11" of her takes the plunge. Vicky suspects the authorities really want her to lead them to her missing lover, the art thief and master of disguises she knows only as "Sir John Smythe." And right in the shadow of the Sphinx she spots him. . . with his new flame. Vicky is so furious at this romantic stab-in-the-back, not to mention the sudden arrival of her meddling boss, Herr Dr. Schmidt, that she may overlook a danger as old as the pharaohs and as unchanging. . . a criminal who hides behind a mask of charm while moving in for the kill.

LeahBergen Your favourite! 😄 5y
Cinfhen I was gonna say I recognize this book / it‘s groovy looking for sure 💕 5y
Ruthiella I‘ve only listened to one Vickie Bliss book on audio which was great (The Laughter of Dead Kings) and I love Peter‘s Amelia Peabody series. 5y
arlenefinnigan Perfect choice! 5y
CarolynM @Ruthiella The Laughter of Dead Kings had its moments, but the earlier books had a lot more snark between Vicky and John. 5y

1. Friends came to stay on the weekend & all our adult children joined us for dinner on Saturday.
2. Tagged
3. Raptors, Australia & St Louis Blues (Melbourne Rebels were so bad on Friday I am not mentioning them)
4. So many! Set texts because I hated them (eg Lord of the Flies, A Patch of Blue), private reading because I was discovering some wonderful writers (eg the Brontes, F Scott Fitzgerald, Margaret Drabble)
5. @Blh87 @seajune

My choice has to be Vicky Bliss and "Sir" John Smythe/Tregath from Elizabeth Peters's books. True love without sentimentality and served with plenty of wit. #lovehate

Erinsuereads ThAts gotta be a nice change! Sounds like a great choice! 6y

From adventure to adventure Vicky is never sure if or when she will see John again

BarbaraBB I don‘t know these ones but they sound good! 6y
CarolynM @BarbaraBB They really are. I absolutely recommend all Elizabeth Peters' books if you like witty adventure/romance ( usually with some history thrown in). 6y
Cinfhen New to me author, too @BarbaraBB 6y

1. Since it's swapping places I'll say Vicky Bliss because I think my husband would enjoy having her in my place as much as I'd enjoy being in hers (although I'd rather actually be her)
2. All About Eve and Bull Durham
3. My family, great travel experiences, great theatre I've seen, the ACT Brumbies in 1996
4. I tag @nickyblue and @conny
Thanks for the tag @Andrew65

Andrew65 @CarolynM What are your thoughts on CA judgements on Smith, Warner and Bancroft? 7y
CarolynM @Andrew65 It's the least they could reasonably do. I have to agree with Clarke and Pietersen it's hard to believe no one else had any knowledge. Lehman's statement this morning was welcome, but hard to accept at face value. 7y

Andrew65 @CarolynM I‘d agree with you, but looking at the latest news I think it was only right that Lehmann resigned because as he rightly said as coach he is responsible for the culture of the team even if he didn‘t know what they planned to do. I don‘t think they helped their case by originally lying to the media (and in essence Australia). Obviously a clean break is needed to help the new coach and Captain take things forward. 7y
Andrew65 Cricket needs a strong Australian team so hopefully things move forward now. (edited) 7y
CarolynM @andrew65 I can't disagree with anything you say, but to suggest, as some here have, that Lehmann created this culture is a nonsense, it's been moving toward this point for some time. I think CA also needs to accept some responsibility for a win at all costs mentality. 7y
Andrew65 @CarolynM I‘d agree with you, this isn‘t something just during his time as coach or Smith‘s captaincy. Unfortunately he was tarnished by this and was really a dead man walking in coaching terms. Listening to CA I did get the feeling they weren‘t going far enough in taking responsibility but time will tell. (edited) 7y

This is my favourite book that fits the prompt and one of my favourites in any genre. It's also the book I read whenever I need cheering up. It's adventurous, romantic and funny. What more could anyone ask for? I had to get a new paperback because the original one had been read so many times it is literally falling apart. The hardback is signed😍😍😍

somebooksaround This book looks wonderful! Thanks for sharing! 😃🙌📚 7y
batsy This book is such fun! I love Vicky Bliss. Signed hardback 😍 Love the cover for the new paperback, too. 7y

I want to be Vicky Bliss. I've always fancied being a 6 foot blonde Amazon with a PhD. Not to mention the charming Sir John Smythe.
Thanks to @Clwojick alerting me to this challenge
