A Newbery Honor Book Joan Bauer's beloved Newbery Honor book--now with a great new look for middle grade readers! When Hope and her aunt move to small-town Wisconsin to take over the local diner, Hope's not sure what to expect. But what they find is that the owner, G.T., isn't quite ready to give up yet--in fact, he's decided to run for mayor against a corrupt candidate. And as Hope starts to make her place at the diner, she also finds herself caught up in G.T.'s campaign--particularly his visions for the future. After all, as G.T. points out, everyone can use a little hope to help get through the tough times . . . even Hope herself. Filled with heart, charm, and good old-fashioned fun, this is Joan Bauer at her best.* When it comes to creating strong, independent, and funny teenaged female characters, Bauer is in a class by herself ... Bauer tells a fast-paced, multilayered story with humor but does not gloss over the struggle[s]. "School Library Journal," starred review Bauer has succeeded in creating another quirky, poignant, and funny novel about a strong girl who admits her frailties ... Hope s story is highly recommended for both middle and high school students. "VOYA" Another entry in Bauer s growing collection of books about likable and appealing female teenagers with a strong vocational calling ... As always from Bauer, this novel is full of humor, starring a strong and idealistic protagonist, packed with funny lines, and peopled with interesting and quirky characters. "Kirkus Reviews""

I can‘t think of a better way to celebrate 5️⃣ years and 2️⃣5️⃣0️⃣ episodes of my book podcast (!!!!) than with a conversation about one of my own childhood favorites, HOPE WAS HERE. I loved chatting with author Bridget Morrissey about her first time reading the book. Listen at the link in my bio!

If you are looking for a compulsive middle grade book, my 12 year old daughter recommends this one! She enjoyed it enough to read it outside of “reading time” and even ordered another by the same author. 👍🏾👍🏾

This coming from a kid who says she doesn‘t like reading. (I think both my kids mostly say that just to tease my goat.) Though I know it isn‘t their favorite activity by any stretch. On occasion they find books that keep their interest. My 14 year old son just read Lord of the Flies for school and loved it.

Gissy Let‘s try it. If your daughter liked it, for me this represents that the story was powerful enough to keep a young one to read it. So important these days for our young people🤗❤️❤️❤️ 2y
Tamra @Melkyl we‘re happy her teacher made it a choice! 2y

This was one of my favorite books as a kid and I always loved the name Hope because of it. As far as now, it continues to hold a special place in my heart and holds all of the charm from when I was a kid.

1. When I was younger, I had wished I was named after Hope from the book "Hope was Here". I wished I could bring hope to others lives. I do not know now what I would wish to be named after.

2. I named my cat Hercules after the greek mythology if that counts.

Sweet YA story about a teen who is a waitress and lives with her short order cook aunt. They move around a bit until they get to The Welcome Stairways Diner in Wisconsin. At first Hope is homesick for Brooklyn, but then she sees how her life has changed in many deep and meaningful ways. I‘m def passing this on to a young waitress in a vegan resto I go to. I think she‘ll enjoy it.

📚zero, I‘m doing a Thursday survey on Friday (that‘s how out of sync I am) HOWEVER, I have 3 books going at once (trying to redeem myself). 🙃
📚 No, I have a feeling this is going to be a whopper of a year, so I can‘t commit.
📚I want to get hip replacement. Pathetic goal, I know, but I need to walk like I used to🤞🏽
📚Walking normally, and then the world is my oyster. Lol

blank Good luck w your hip replacement! Thanks for playing! 5y

❄️ Mobility- I hope to be perfectly mobile after hip replacement, just have to work out who is doing it and other logistics, like who will watch the fur babies ❤️
New Year‘s means little to me. It‘s only significance is that we‘ve rotated around the sun once since the last NYE. I‘ve lived another 365 1/4 days. Lol

Eggs I hope your hip recovery is smooth 5y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Eggs Thank you!! Not sure when it will be done yet, but I‘m thinking spring🌼 5y
MoonWitch94 Another trip around the sun is something to be grateful for, indeed. Hope your surgery goes well. Mobility is a good word. Thanks for playing 💙🌟 5y

Joan Bauer has written a number of YA books about hard-working teens, and I really liked this one about a high school senior working in a local diner while also dealing with the usual and some unusual teenage drama. #workaholic #jubilantjuly

Melkyl I recommend this one to my students fairly often. 7y

Joan Bauer's Newberry Honor book, "Hope Was Here" never fails to make me hungry. Centering on small town life & a mayoral campaign headquartered in a Wisconsin diner means food is referenced constantly. It doesn't hurt that the narrator is a teenage waitress, or that her aunt is, basically, the world's best cook. So much food! The ending feels a little abrupt/rushed, but this is still an excellent book, a longtime favorite. #SomethingForSept
