What Now? | Ann Patchett
15 posts | 19 read | 10 to read
Based on her lauded commencement address at Sarah Lawrence College, this stirring essay by bestselling author Ann Patchett offers hope and inspiration for anyone at a crossroads, whether graduating, changing careers, or transitioning from one life stage to another. With wit and candor, Patchett tells her own story of attending college, graduating, and struggling with the inevitable question, What now? From student to line cook to teacher to waitress and eventually to award-winning author, Patchett's own life has taken many twists and turns that make her exploration genuine and resonant. As Patchett writes, "'What now?' represents our excitement and our future, the very vitality of life." She highlights the possibilities the unknown offers and reminds us that there is as much joy in the journey as there is in reaching the destination.

This was lovely, sweet, and wise, and I guess counts as an #AuthorAMonth read! 😁 I just always love Ann Patchett‘s writing and the sound of her voice reading it. I meant to get to Run this month, too - but having some of her backlist to look forward to isn‘t a bad thing.

This is the Graduation speech that Anne Patchett gave at her Alma Mater, Sarah Lawrence. Read by the author in her soothing, clear voice, it was wonderful! She shares personal stories that shaped her life. Thank you @Soubhiville for choosing Anne as #AuthorAMonth. I have read many of her books, but I only found this because of the challenge. Ever since, I heard her speak at an author‘s event, I have been such a fan girl! And now even more so!

lynneamch Same here! I saw her speak a few years ago at the Literary Luncheon in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. She was absolutely charming. Where did you see her? 3y
DivineDiana @lynneamch I saw her at an author‘s event in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. “The Dutch House”had just been released, and she has a close friend from college who lives there. Her friend introduced her. Anne would stay with her friend‘s family during college holidays. Glad you got to see her too! One day. Parnassus! (edited) 3y

This was a really short audio, an extension of the author‘s commencement address at her alma mater. Quick but satisfying, and it filled my short commute today. 🚙

My Girl Child graduates from college this May so I wanted to read this to see if she would like it - it's wonderful!! A quick read (literally like 20 minutes) it's full of wisdom for any age or phase of life, really. 🤓

JennyM Ah, congrats to you and your daughter. Beautiful picture ♥️ 4y

Since I‘m a rreeaallyy slow reader, I chose this short nugget for the #finishinaday #Booked2020 prompt. It was a refreshing look at different crossroads in our lives. Patchett delivered a slightly different version as a commencement address at Sarah Lawrence. No earth-shattering revelations (if you‘ve heard one commencement address...), but it‘s always nice to remind yourself that crossroads aren‘t just scary, they can be exciting too.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Love the little bird and good job on the book! ♥️📚👊🏻 4y
alisiakae Is that little bird from Target? I have two that look like his cousins! ☺️ 4y
Cinfhen Such a great photo!!! And book sounds wonderful 😊 4y
Smarkies Hahaha. Yes me too! I had to pick a really thin book for this prompt as I know that as I am a slow reader and get distracted easily I needed something small. 4y
TheWordJar @4thhouseontheleft It is! I have a few fall ones and a few winter ones. They‘re just so cute! 4y

Amazon opening across street from Ann Patchett‘s store. The difference between the two. #parnassusbooks https://www.nashvillepublicradio.org/post/what-happens-when-amazon-opens-across-...

vivastory I've been contemplating an Amazon boycott. News like this is definitely not helping their case. 5y
LibrarianRyan @vivastory I will be happy to have you in my amazon boycott. I do not buy books from them. Some other stuff, but nothing reading or literature related. 5y
Booksnchill Parnassus is my local independent- I think they will be fine- their customer base is loyal and their author events are amazing. Amazon will get the customers they would get anyway as Parnassus does not discount books- and hasn‘t needed to. #IndieStrong 5y

#AdelesMayMashUp Day 25: My nephew is visiting us in Singapore after having some trouble at home in the Philippines. I am hoping that the books I have prepared for him will help him become #RightAsRain, and pave the way out of his existential funk. Bibliotherapy works, or so I declare.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I hope so too!!! Hugs from America 💙💙💙 6y
LoverofLit My husband is an existentialist and gets into depressive funks as well. Any possibility you'd be willing to share your book list with me? He likes audiobooks 😄 6y

mgallo1968 True! I don‘t re-read many so don‘t buy lots of books. Occasionally I will not have something immediately ready for next read on hand. Once, I drove in the middle of the night to a LITTLE FREE LIBRARY to find a book so I could sleep!😊 (edited) 6y
KarinWestbrook One of my new year resolutions was to not buy any books until I got through my large TBR stack... stupidest thing I ever said, lasted three days! 🤣 6y

The text of Ann Patchett's graduation speech at Sarah Lawrence, this is a thoughtful meditation on the unknown path of life. It speaks to everyone, especially when we are each at a crossroads. The audio is read by the author, which I enjoyed.

Wise words from this talented, entertaining, and incredibly inspirational author, speaking at a literacy fundraising event. She said her words on paper are never as good as they were in her head. But, she has learned to forgive herself and realize she has done the best she can.

I read this great little book this past weekend - This book was based on Ms Pachett commencement address at Sarah Lawrence College . For anyone at a crossroads in their life. - "Just because things hadn't gone the way I had planned didn't necessarily mean they had gone wrong."
