Concluding the interdependency trilogy, the last emperox has all the good traits of the previous ones and feels like the closer. Characters know who they are and how they fit into the changing times and the downfall of everything. I was disappointed with the ending. It felt too much like the issues that came up before somehow wouldn't carry forward. It felt unearned, maybe a sequel will help. Would still recommend though.

A satisfying ending to a fun trilogy. Not to get too meta here, but if this series were a tv show, it is the kind of thing that Murderbot would watch repeatedly as one of its entertainments/distractions. It's pure capital S, capital O, Space Opera and the betrayals & twists just keep coming & coming. Honestly I could have used a bit more science/space battles, and a little less scheming/double-crossing, but overall, I'm very satisfied.

Mogoeg And with the new DUNE movie just around the corner, and Foundation premiering on Apple+, I'm pumped! (I don't even really care if Foundation is good - it LOOKS amazing and I am all about that space empire swag). And I probably have time for one more novel to round out 'Space Opera September' - what should it be? 1y
Traci1 I just finished book 2 and am loving this series. It may be my favorite Scalzi so far. I assume you've read the Expanse books? 1y
Lucy_Anywhere I really enjoyed this series! Have you tried The Prefect by Alastair Reynolds? 1y

This was a good conclusion to Scalzi's Hugo-nominated Interdependency series, with some real surprises at the end. #hugoawards #hugo2021

I finished 5 books from my list during the #SuperSeptember readathon, so it was a success. Thanks @EadieB for hosting while @Andrew65 is recovering!

EadieB You‘re welcome! Congrats 🎊 for finishing 5 books 📚 and thanks for participating! 1y

After reading the second book a few weeks ago, I had to go back to the well. I‘m glad that I did. It was worth it.

Pedrocamacho There has to be at least a fourth one, right???? 2y

I really enjoyed this trilogy on the whole, and I like the overall ending as well. That said, it feels like a lot of the branching conflicts were resolved in a pretty anti-climactic and less satisfying way. The last 100 pages or so really feels like an exercise in tying up loose ends with footnotes and epilogues. Still an enjoyable read though!

A satisfying conclusion to the trilogy! I‘m just so sad that it‘s done. This one didn‘t disappoint with some suspenseful plot twists and turns. I had to put the book down a few times to absorb what had just happened. Recommended.

??? Science-fiction. I enjoy the escape from the mundane world, the sense of awe and wonder that the best sci-fi produces.
? Deathstalker series by Simon R. Green. Its space opera in its finest form, full of glorious swashbuckling heroes, vile villains and an overload of "widescreen" action.

I enjoyed this series so much and the finale did not disappoint! The beginning of this 1 was a little slow because Scalzi spent so much time recapping the first two books. I might have appreciated it more if I had read these books as they were coming out, but since I binged the entire trilogy at once, I didn‘t think he needed to spend quite that much time rehashing his own plots. That said, I found the whole thing very entertaining and satisfying.

?????
"As far as Kiva could tell, whenever selfish humans encountered a wrenching, life-altering crisis, they embarked on a journey of five distinct stages:

1. Denial.
2. Denial.
3. Denial.
4. Fucking Denial.
5. Oh shit everything is terrible grab what you can and run."

The author is apparently a doomsday genius. This book was penned before the toilet paper crisis of 2020. One of the best space operas I've ever read.

hermyknee Is this a stand-alone or is a part of The Collapsing Empire world? Either way, adding it to my list! 2y
Eggbeater @hermyknee It the third and final book of the Interdependency series, the first of which is the Collapsing Empire. 2y
hermyknee @Eggbeater I‘m going to have to catch myself up! It looks great— I loved your review! 2y

This was fantastic! I love the worldbuilding in these books and adore the characters. I was so curious about how it would wrap up, and I was not disappointed. I want to gush more, but it would be too full of spoilers. Wil Wheaton's narration was great as always. I highly recommend these books, especially on audio!

Wow!! This was soooo good!! It took no time to get back into the characters and political intrigue of the Interdependency. I'm only sorry that it's over, I'd read another dozen books in this world. I usually hate characters who use profanity too much, but Kiva Lagos is one of my all time favorite characters. Mouth like a sailor, but she's one kick ass heroine. 5 💥💥💥💥💥

📖 The Last Emperox by John Scalzi
📖 Both, but I lean more toward Sci-fi because so much fantasy these days is part of multi-volume series that go on for decades (I'm looking at you GOT!!)

If you enjoyed The Collapsing Empire and The Consuming Fire, you will definitely love The Last Emperox. Set in a world facing a society-threatening crisis, this novel is timely, entertaining, and an emotional rollercoaster, as the voices of reason struggle against the forces of greed and narcissism. I love these characters so much and will really miss them! Once again I have read a long-awaited book much too quickly, and now it's over.

I loved this universe so it was a little bittersweet to think of this as the end but it was so good. A little bit of a gutpunch to the emotions I wasn't expecting since this trilogy is really popcorn scifi and not too terribly deep. I have to say I'm okay with the way things turned out in the end which is all you can really ask for.

I am always down for some Scalzi. My work is currently hosting an exhibit from NASA, and since I can‘t make it to another world (yet), I will happily settle for space travel through books.
