Beowulf: A Translation and Commentary, Together with Sellic Spell
Beowulf: A Translation and Commentary, Together with Sellic Spell | J R R Tolkien
The translation of Beowulf by J.R.R. Tolkien was an early work, very distinctive in its mode, completed in 1926: he returned to it later to make hasty corrections, but seems never to have considered its publication.

5 new books from Book Outlet

Terry Brooks, The Sword of Shannara trilogy, 25th anniversary edition .

A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine.

JRR Tolkien, Beowulf.

Rage & Relentless from Jonathan Maberry.

I love new books!

vivastory I'm curious about that version of Beowulf. I've read a couple of other translations. Also interested in the Martine. Have heard great things. 3y
Twainy @vivastory I‘m reading the first book in the Teixcalaan Series & enjoying it. I‘ve promised myself I wouldn‘t buy any more Book Outlet books this year. Pfft now I have to be mad at myself. LOL I don‘t regret it! The 2 Alice books are worth more than I paid for all 8. This is a justification, isn‘t it. Ugh .. I have 4 book boxes at home …. I can‘t wait to dive into Beowulf! … going to go NOT book shop … (edited) 3y

Reading the commentary regarding the missing? obscured? name of a woman, and the trouble that followed from her marriage.

The first part of this book is Tolkien's prose translation of the epic poem. This would be for the casual reader that enjoys the epic. I enjoyed this, but not as much as I thought I would. I felt Heaney's translation was much more readable. The next two parts, the Notes and the Commentary would be perfect for students of the poem. These did shed more historical light on the epic. My favorite parts were Sellic Spell and The Lay of Beowulf.

Both Beowulf and The Saga of Hrolf Kraki were based on a variant of the ancient ‘Bears Son‘ folktale. Tolkien is one of the few scholars who can do this epic heroic poem justice, conveying its full power, meaning, and history.

17 years ago today I was teaching Beowulf when someone came into my class to announce that the building was being evacuated. I‘ve posted a meditation of sorts about Beowulf and 9/11 on my blog page Trapped in the Scriptorium. https://trappedinthescriptorium.com/2018/09/11/strange-eulogies/

Challenge | Day 28

I believe I can say that I'm jealous of anyone who has been able to read this book here until the end. Tolkien is wonderful, you know, but there's no way to say it's an easy book.

Tolkien's translation of Beowulf is so neat! You can definitely see how it drastically influenced his writing. This book included a lot of notes on Tolkien's translation and if you ever get the chance to read this version, please do! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
