Death in the Stocks | Georgette Heyer

"Death in the Stocks is rare and refreshing."-The Times A Moonlit Night, a Sleeping Village, and an Unaccountable Murder... In the dead of the night, a man in an evening dress is found murdered, locked in the stocks on the village green. Unfortunately for Superintendent Hannasyde, the deceased is Andrew Vereker, a man hated by nearly everyone, especially his odd and unhelpful family members. The Verekers are as eccentric as they are corrupt, and it will take all Hannasyde's skill at detection to determine who's telling the truth, and who is pointing him in the wrong direction. The question is: who in this family is clever enough to get away with murder? "Miss Heyer's characters act and speak with an ease and conviction that is refreshing as it is rare in the ordinary mystery novel."-Times Literary Supplement

A fun and tricky golden age murder mystery (I picked the wrong suspect?) featuring a cast of characters who exhibited exactly the kind of upper class arrogance I find amusing in fiction (definitely not in real life). Also, one of them used the word "chicken" as an endearment as my grandfather used to do - it was a lovely reminder of him?

Cathythoughts Sounds good. I have it stacked already 👍🏻 2y
LeahBergen Ooo, I‘ll have to read this one. 👍 2y
batsy I enjoyed this, too! And great point about what's amusing/entertaining in fiction vs intolerable in real life 😆 2y
mabell Heyer writes such awful characters that are just so much fun! Especially Roger 😄 2y

I finished this on a very gorgeous train journey from the other end of the county, a couple of nights ago.

When Arnold is killed, ALL of his unconventional colleagues/friends/relations have a motive. They‘re also all spectacularly uncooperative, are lying through their teeth, and have no alibi.

It was fun, silly and entertaining, and I will be reading more Georgette Heyer mysteries even if a couple of bits were wildly predictable.

squirrelbrain Sounds like a lovely, easy book! 2y

Why have I not read Georgette Heyer‘s crime books before now?

I love that Toni is quite ok with letting her brother finish his novel, before she informs him of the murder of a close relation. Priorities an‘ all!

It‘s kind of like Mapp & Lucia with murders - the characters are all quite fabulously ghastly!

TrishB I love that you got ghastly in a review 😁 2y
LeahBergen I haven‘t read this one. I guess I‘ll be picking it up next time I see it! 😆 2y

CarolynM Irresistible! Stacked🙂 2y
LeahBergen @rockpools I read one of her mysteries (which one? 🤔) and wasn‘t crazy about it. And I‘ve been telling myself ever since to try some more as I love her Regencies so much. 2y
LeahBergen @batsy Ghastly characters are the best. 😆 2y
batsy @LeahBergen They honestly are! Especially when the author is having fun 😁 2y

Did a switch for my final #cloakanddaggerchristmas prompt & went with this for the Golden Age mystery. It's a bit of a Bright Young Things escapade, though published in 1935, with a lot of zinging wit & repartee, murders, & romance. I enjoyed it though it's by no means perfect.

I really enjoyed this challenge; murders are perfect for December! Lol. Completed 6 prompts:
Inspector Bucket
Gamache
Tommy & Tuppence
Agatha Raisin
Hercule Poirot
Columbo

batsy @merelybookish Thanks for getting us excited about this challenge 😁 2y
merelybookish @batsy 6 done! I think we both exceeded our expectations. Murder is the perfect counterbalance to Christmas cheer! 😁 2y

My first time reading Georgette Heyer - already have a library hold on another, so it won't be the last. Definitely understand why she's a classic, excellent prose and great characterization. A thoroughly enjoyable read, especially on a week when I was quite tired.

1935 for #192019challenge (yep still doing that, though haven't posted much for a while)

If Kenneth had gone to the ball, he would have had an alibi. Violet disapproved of his going, out of respect to the dead. In a fit of pique, he vowed to attend.

So, did he go to the ball, or did he pay a deadly visit to his cousin that night?
