This was a book club pick that literally made me want to cry. I was not interested in this book and felt like I was back in school being forced to read shit I didn't want to. But because I had declined attending the previous meeting because I didn't want to read Tuesdays with Morrie I forced myself to read it.

I LOVED every word of it!!!! And I ended up being the only member who liked it 😂

#VolumesAndVocals #DarkHorseKatyPerry

dabbe That's just another reason why books are so magical. I felt the exact same way, read it, and then wrote an earnest plea to my district years ago (before all this banning shit) to have it placed on our literature list. Non-fiction is so difficult to find sometimes for high schoolers. Well, back then it seemed to be. 🤣😍🤗 1y
TheBookgeekFrau Right?! I was completely blown away by how much I enjoyed reading this. I can see this as being a great example of how writing can draw readers in to subject matters seen as uninteresting. So, did the district allow it? 1y

This book is a telling of a collision of storms off that created havoc for not only the F/V Andrea Gail but for the community as well. There's lots of weather science in the book that I found riveting, similar to Erik Larson or Mary Roach. If you like non-fiction and are an extreme-weather-outdoor-survival-story kind of reader then you will like this book.#litsyAtoZ for the letter J and it completes my challenge!

marleed I read this book years ago and keep it on my shelves still. It gave me mad respect for fishermen - particularly of the sword variety! 3y

Listened this on audio book. I wish more of the book was about the storm itself, and less of a summary of the fishing industry. Overall it was still good.

I liked both book and movie. This book taught me to appreciate detail in storytelling. And can I just give a shout out to swordfisherman - like, what the hell are you thinking!!?

“In 1938, the hurricane put downtown Providence, Rhode Island, under 10 feet of ocean. The waves generated by that storm were so huge that they literally shook the earth; seismographs in Alaska picked up their impact 5,000 miles away.”

It was good, but there was a lot of detail that I just ended up skimming over. The author talked to families and loved ones of the missing fishermen, and to some of the rescuers and survivors, as well as others who had a link to the people caught in the storm. There were a lot of people to keep track of, and I was unsuccessful at much of that, often forgetting who was who unless there was a reminder. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin There is no way to know what happened aboard the Andrea Gail, so that is kept to speculation about what most fishermen were likely to do in similar circumstances. Some of the fishing techniques upset me (trawling), and I‘m sure things have gotten worse since 1991 (and 1997 when the book was published), but that also wasn‘t news, sadly. Probably the most interesting parts of the book, for me, were the descriptions of the various rescues 6y

#WinterWonderland #BlowNorthernWind conjured images of howling winds, enormous waves, erratic rains.... pretty much the elements that led to The Perfect Storm. Saw the movie, George Clooney ( what more do you need to know)😜💟

Wasn‘t crazy about this one.
It‘s sold as the story of the Andrea Gail, when it should follow whole storm, and the players, throughout. Since the last third is all but devoid of the Andrea Gail, Junger shifts to other rescues happening in the Atlantic at that time. Great... but feels like filler because up ‘til then, it was all about one ship & her crew.
If you‘re interested, it‘s worth a read. But you can watch the movie and be done, too.

Well, it had some really good points... but it also had some really boring, information dumping points, too. Did not care for the narration. Half the time he sounded bored with the story.

Very long audio book!

#booksetbythesea - and, in this case, on it. My hubby read this. I can't after seeing the movie. #somethingforseptember #septphotochallenge #septemberphotochallenge

akfreeborn Great pick! 8y
bookishkai It's actually not really anything like the movie. The movie is full of adventure and drama, and while there is a bit of it in the book, it's really more a very good history of sword fishing, New England fishing communities, and the issues that made Billy Tyne make the choices he did. 8y
