A stunning modern-day fairy tale from acclaimed author Anne Ursu Once upon a time, Hazel and Jack were best friends. But that was before he stopped talking to her and disappeared into a forest with a mysterious woman made of ice. Now it's up to Hazel to go in after him. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen," Breadcrumbs is a story of the struggle to hold on, and the things we leave behind.

Thank you @Bookgoil - I love my #wintersolsticeswap !! The tagged book 📕 looks perfect for cozy winter break reading (how lucky am I to have gotten a kids‘ librarian as my swap partner? Cool teen lit for the win!!!). I‘ve already broken into the cookies 🍪 and the chai ☕️ will be 100% happening later today - in the tub with my favorite bath 🛁 bomb brand and a yummy-smelling candle 🕯 perhaps? 🤗 ♥️

Bookgoil I loved all of these so I hope you enjoy! Thanks for being an awesome partner! ❤️ enjoy all your goodies! 3y

#2020favorites #YAedition

Breadcrumbs - based on "The Snow Queen" - Hazel fights for her bff.

Igniting Darkness - not the best technically, but the final installment in a series I've loved.

Thorn - retelling of The Goose Girl - loved the strong, kind heroine.

The Extraordinaries - last book of 2020, and a complete delight from start to finish. Smart, weird teens are so great.

Kids can handle a lot more than you think they can. It's when they get to be grown up that you have to start worrying.

I knew this was a fantasy book when Jack's heart was frozen and how the ice world was described to be like, showing fantasy, non realistic characteristics.

thejessashmore I also liked how the author sort of made the story believable by making the beginning start normal how a lot of friendships start in real life. 5y

I personally really enjoyed this book and I would use this as a suggestion for an older age group to read. I could see older aged kids being interested in this book.

Bummer that I was 2/3 of the way through this before finding out the author will not be making the panel next week and another author has been replaced. I wasn‘t a fan of this book because I felt it was really repetitious and slow going. It‘s marked as a 6th grade book for our summer reading books. I did think it portrayed the age group and tough friend relationships at that age and that I did like. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Although I‘m not the target audience for this book, (it‘s Middle Grade) I found it quite a charming read, & it was nice to have a MC of colour. It has shades of the Snow Queen & Narnia, but not the same depth of world building or characterisation. Children will probably love it. 3.5🌟

Oph this hurt my heart with cuteness. This concept of Hazel “not matching“ her parents hurt. I'm a firm believer that you choose your real family--no matter what you all look like together so that hit me in the feels. There's a household dealing with becoming a single parents household and another with a parent with severe depression...then the Snow Queen retelling is folded in. Lots of Narnia feels.

Katerina What a pretty cover! Is this aimed at a younger audience? 5y

Once again, I should love this book. It's based on "The Snow Queen," it's packed with clever references to seminal children's books, and it presents a deep, layered look at its young protagonist's emotional life. In theory, I'm glad kids have books like this. I'd probably have loved it when I was 8.

Now, though, I found it tough to sink into and I was more than ready for the ending when it came. Sadness.

Well, my midway thoughts on this book stand. Too many allusions to other children's literature made this feel completely unoriginal. The prose was mediocre and too much time was spent emphasizing hazel's insecurities, which is the most boring kind of main character.

Half way into this audiobook. The kids are enjoying it but I have to admit that I am not. So many references to other books, it feels like a recycled fairy tale. (Rowling, Tolkien, Lewis, gaiman). so far, pretty unoriginal.

NotYourHandmaid I'm also pretty over the "winter as metaphor" cliche in good vs evil fantasy. 8y
