Magic Study | Maria V. Snyder
A lesson in loyaltya master class in intrigueSo far, I've managed to survive. You would think after being kidnapped as a child, imprisoned in my teens and released to become a poison taster, I would have endured enough. But no. The discovery of my magical abilitiespowers forbidden in Ixiahas resulted in an execution order. My only chance is to flee to Sitia, my long-lost birthplace. But Sitia is unfamiliar. I'm treated like an enemyeven by my own brother. Plus I can't control my powers. I want to learn about my magic, but there isn't time. A rogue magician has emerged and I'm targeted as his next victim. Will my magical abilities save meor be my downfall?

Unpopular opinion, but I think this one is much better than the first! I loved how the main character's world expanded as we learned more about her. New and interesting characters are introduced. New powers are discovered. It's been a long time since I rated a book with 5 stars, but I'm considering it with this book. It has all the elements that I love. Definitely hard to put down.

This was quite good but it lacked the grip that the first book had. This book's events were all over the place even though they were interesting. I think Yelena was kind of looking for herself and the book displayed that and it ended up not working as well as the first book. I'm going to still read the third one and then see if it's worth to read the rest in the series.

Decided I needed something easy and fun to read. I've kind of missed light fantasy reads. I think this will do the trick. 😊

Her amber eyes burned into mine with all the hate and loathing she could muster. Underneath, though, she was terrified. Hate and loathing didn't bother me, but fear was a powerful emotion. Fear causes the dog to bite, and Roze was one bitch.

Not as good as the first but still very good, not having Valek for most of this book just made me appreciate him more when he did appear.

The second book in the series is still a solid entry, although there is a character who really annoys me, so that brings it down a little overall. Still really enjoying my reread!! I will say that there is a situation where young women are being kidnapped and abused - nothing remotely graphic, but if you are sensitive to those situations, something to keep in mind.

For #24b4Monday I finished two books & a short story & am halfway through ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) the third for a total of 1063 pages, so a pretty decent weekend!! Yesterday was chilly & gloomy & we were very minimally productive, so I got a lot of reading in & had a super relaxing day. Thanks for hosting @Andrew65 @jb72 @sumisbooks 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 This was a great follow up to book 1! The world expanded so much and many more characters were introduced without losing the connection to where we had come from in the previous book. Can‘t wait for book 3!

Thank you for doing this giveaway and congrats on 200K! That is quite an achievement! 😊

I would love the 2nd book in the Poison Study series, Magic Study. I just read the 1st one and I've become obsessed! I'd love to continue the series and read the 2nd book.

Librarybelle Thank you! Great choice! 4y

I love how strong the main character is in this series. I‘m excited that we were able to learn more about her magical abilities in this book as well as getting in some romance. We‘ll see what other obstacles Yelena has to overcome in the next book!

I didn't enjoy this as much as Poison Study, but it was a quick read. I felt like a couple of the subplots were unnecessary and cluttered up the story.
So far, I've finished my daily chapter of the Hobbit and 1 book. #24in48

Here's my tentative TBR of #24in48 readathon- mostly stuff I've started but haven't finished. I'm a mood reader, so it's entirely possible I won't touch any of these and will read something completely different.
I had planned to stay up and get an hour or two in after midnight, but I don't think that's going to happen. Too many late nights with my books lately...
@24in48

swishandflick I spy with my little eye All the Ugly and Wonderful Things 🙌🏽 Such an excellent book 😄 7y
MarriedtoMrT I'm such a mood reader, too! It can be frustrating sometimes when there are so many books I want to read but I'm not in the right mood. 7y

I've been trying to read and crochet at the same time, without very much success. I think I'm too tired to do either, and should probably just go to bed...

BookFreakOut Whoa, I couldn't read print and crochet! Too much concentration! I do like listening to audiobooks that way, though. 7y

Reading Kindle version.
Poison Study came up on my Memories on Facebook the other day, which means it had been a year since I read it. Felt like a good time to finally pick up the second book. I still remember quite a bit about the first book so I opted out of a reread.
So far I've only read the first chapter.

Sidekick Kiki (who literally likes to kick bad guys' sides), a blue-eyed copper-coat Sandseed horse from the Soulfinders books...sassy, loyal, wise, and peppermint obsessed 🍭 Her dialogue with protagonist Yelena is hilarious, and often thought-provoking! Kiki is one of my favourite characters in this well-written fantasy series 😃 ~ #Day13 #BestSidekick #booktober #bookphotochallenge ~ @RealLifeReading

Bookworm54 Oh good choice! She is one lovely horse 😍 🐴 7y
bmsddk @Bookworm54 Thanks! She definitely is lovely ❤ 🐎 Have you read many of these books? 7y
Bookworm54 I have all of them! But I haven't got around to reading Night Study yet 😖 I wasn't a huge fan of the glass trilogy as I don't agree with who Opal ends up with. Aside from that they are great too! The new trilogy goes back to Yelena though ❤️ Have you read them all? 7y

bmsddk @Bookworm54 I've read the Study Trilogy/first Soulfinders trio and the Glass Trilogy. Not reading the second Soulfinders trio until the last one comes out next year because Snyder writes brutal cliffhangers! I really enjoy her books, every element is polished. And, she builds incredible characters! Especially Yelena, one of those protags who, while she makes mistakes, actually thinks. 7y
bmsddk @Bookworm54 Opal was an interesting protag. Very much agree with you about her choice, which was a bit disturbing. If she had to end up with someone, I thought the Kade of the first book was best (his character inexplicable changed in the second two books). Or, not choosing any of the three guys would have been a great ending as well. What were your thoughts? 7y
bmsddk @Bookworm54 Have you read Snyder's Healer series? It's set in a different realm. Another great trilogy of hers! I love how we start in one place in the first book, and by the third book, the adventure has taken us someplace vastly different, but it's exactly what the story calls for. 7y
Bookworm54 I thought first book Kade would have been better, and I am always up for no men because Opal is a very strong and independent character. It's hard because with the later books he seems so nice, but I personally would not forgive someone for the things he did, even if it wasn't technically 'him'. Makes me a little uncomfortable! And good choice with the waiting! Let me tell you haha! 7y
Bookworm54 I have read the healer series. I found it really interesting. Especially since the powers in it were so different from those in the chronicles of Ixia! And I found the peace and death lilies to be a really cool addition! :) I am a little obsessed with Snyder to be honest. She has a sci-fi duology which is also very good. First is 7y
bmsddk @Bookworm54 I'm excited about reading the Inside Out duology this Christmas. Snyder has been my go-to author to read while recovering from air travel, so I've been saving that one for then 😀 Glad to know it will be good! 7y
bmsddk @Bookworm54 Yes, those lilies were a great element! I loved how she set that storyline up so we didn't end up with a random save-the-day. Do you like any authors or books similar to Snyder or her stories? 7y
Bookworm54 I have a couple of go to authors. Alongside Snyder I can never resist anything by Kelly Armstrong, Patricia Briggs, Nalini Singh, or Cassandra Clare. (Not that I am fully up to date with any of them at present!). How about you? 7y
bmsddk @Bookworm54 Great author recommends, thank you 😀 The Mercy Thompson series sounds interesting -- a magical female mechanic! I had a hard time finding which books are the Kelly Armstrong you mentioned, would you mind sharing or tagging a title? 7y
bmsddk @Bookworm54 A few of my go-to authors in fantasy are Maggie Stiefvater, Elise Kova, and Leigh Bardugo (not fully up to date with all them either). Melissa Haag for a dash of paranormal. I'll buy anything by Marissa Meyer! I really want to read more from Neal Shusterman (his Unwind series was brilliant) and Amie Kaufman (the Starbound trilogy was beautiful), and I'm excited to see more from Sarah Larson. 7y
Bookworm54 Mercy is kick ass 😉 7y
Bookworm54 Pressed send too early 😳 I will definitely have a look for those! And Kelley Armstrong, her main series is Women of the Otherworld which starts with Bitten. She has a couple of young adult spin offs from that too. And then a few other series she is dabbling in. So I would recommend Bitten (werewolves, expanding to other supernaturals from book 2) and Sea of Shadows (a YA trilogy with pretty interesting magic) :) 7y
bmsddk @Bookworm54 Thank you so much!! Looking forward to delving into some new reads 😄 The send button on this app is a bit finicky, no worries. 7y
bmsddk @Bookworm54 It just occurred to me as I posted a review for it that you might enjoy the Greystone Series by Taylor Longford! It's a light, quick, fun paranormal romance series with some gargoyle v. harpy fights. Plus witches, and FBI involvement 😀 7y
Bookworm54 It sounds amazing! 😍 7y
the.bookish.valkyrie Oh, Kiki, I love her! Trust is peppermints! 7y
bmsddk @Valkyrie923 The series definitely wouldn't be the same without her 😀 7y
the.bookish.valkyrie Not even close! 7y

I appreciate that the 2nd book focuses on discovering Yelena's powers more, and it does not deviate from the action in her adventures. I do want and need more of Valek though. 😋 In the next book, I hope to learn more about the category of her magic, which people seem to fear greatly.

It isn't often that one finds a sequel that feels like a perfect follow-up to a beloved story. Magic Study got it right, complementing and equalling its predecessor, and I can hardly wait to read the third book (as a matter of fact, I CAN'T wait so I'm starting it tonight)!
