I think it‘s a good book but like it‘s one of those books I wouldn‘t want to read again kinda like the refugee book Xavier mentioned, I‘ve read that book aswell I would agree with that statement. In case you want to know, of course you do, anyways. It‘s about a girl who wants a ‘real family‘ she has one but her father in jail, and her mom is very sick. So she has to stay with her aunt and uncle. Not gonna spoil anymore ya could find out on your own

Wish is a RF. It is about a young girl who gets sent to live with her aunt and uncle which she barely knows after her mom is arrested. She has one wish to find the family she has always wanted. She has many creative ways to wish, some I have heard of, others were new. She finds a stray dog and comes up with a creative way to catch it. The dog is her friend. This could be an IR or LC. #ucflae3414f17

Question #8
Okay, so there are sooooo many more things I would have loved to discuss (her parents, the teacher, her relationship with Wishbone, her relationship with her uncle, the setting, her chances for making a wish...I could keep going), but alas it's to wrap it up.

What is one question you would ask Barbara O'Connor if you could?

#mgbuddyread

Chelsibno I'd like to ask her what inspired her to write the story. 7y
MrsGreen I'd like to ask her how she is able to write the Southern dialect so well! Some sentences boggled my mind! 7y
Smangela What character does she relate to most? 7y
See All 9 Comments
TheBookAddict Was Scrappy a nickname? And if so, why was his real name not mentioned? I would also ask the same question as @Chelsibno . 7y
Lmstraubie @TheBookAddict I believe it was a nickname. I wonder if it was given in place of his real name to develop his character. 7y
TheBookAddict @Lmstraubie yeah, I thought so. It could have been. I was also thinking that maybe since he was so disconnected from Charlie's life, even though he was a big part her troubles, she only knew him as Scrappy. She only knew part of him, the small parts that were sometimes at home and since we are seeing him through her eyes we only know him as Scrappy. 7y
Lmstraubie @TheBookAddict I never thought of it that way. That's a really good point. 7y

Question #7
It's obvious how much Bertha loves Charlie. Why do you think she left the canning jars in Charlie's bedroom?
#mgbuddyread

Peddler410 I believe Bertha was afraid to get too comfortable having Charlie with them. Leaving the canning jars in the bedroom reminded her that the situation was temporary. Bertha was protecting herself from getting her hopes up. 7y
Chelsibno @Peddler410 I totally agree! I've heard of foster parents who have done similar things to help them not get too attached to kids who are only temporarily in their care. That also might be why Bertha hadn't become a foster parent before even though she loves children. Going into a situation that is temporary would be too painful. At least with Charlie, there was a chance that the situation could become a permanent arrangement. 7y
MrsGreen Yes @Peddler410 ! This is totally it. Those canning jars leave a barrier between Charlie as a visitor and Charlie as a daughter. 7y

Question #6
Charlie is very angry with her sister Jackie. Do you think she should be?
#mgbuddyread

Amie She probably "shouldn't" be, but I can understand why she is because she sees Jackie's situation as better than her own, and she probably feels like Jackie, as the older sibling, should be able to do something about the whole situation. But, of course, none of this is Jackie's fault either. 7y
Peddler410 I understand why Charlie is upset. To Charlie, Jackie got the better deal being able to stay in Raleigh. What she doesn't understand is that Jackie is have troubles of her own. 7y
Lmstraubie @amie @Peddler410 I was so glad when Jackie came to visit her and we were able to see a different side of her. The visit also gave Charlie a boost even though it was hard to say goodbye. 7y
See All 8 Comments
Chelsibno I can understand why Charlie is upset. Not only does it seem like Jackie got the better deal, but she feels like Jackie doesn't care about the problems she is facing. I think it's easy for people to be upset with a loved one when it feels like they aren't hearing them out when they voice their problems. 7y
MrsGreen Definitely! Charlie feels like her sister doesn't even think about her anymore. I saw Jackie as very self centered but I also wondered if she talked so much so that she could hide being unhappy or that Charlie wouldn't have time to ask the hard questions. After your sister takes care of you for years, then suddenly drops you, I'd be mad too (simplifying the plot obviously) 7y
Lmstraubie @Chelsibno @MrsGreen It could have been Jackie's defense mechanism also. She probably felt terrible about the situation so ignoring it would make it easier for her to cope. 7y
Smangela @amie @Peddler410 @Lmstraubie @MrsGreen @Chelsibno Also, Charlie has a different view of Jackie. Jackie has previously been a surrogate mother to Charlie so I'm sure it feels like another abandonment to her. However? What a relief to Jackie to finally be able to be a kid again! Yes, agreed that technically Charlie "shouldn't" feel mad at Jackie, it doesn't mean that her feelings aren't valid or relatable though :) 7y
Lmstraubie @Smangela That's so true! Jackie never really got to be a kid because she took it upon herself to be responsible for Charlie. 7y

Question #5
Why do you think it is that Charlie dislikes Audrey so much, yet at the same time wants to be her friend?
#mgbuddyread

Amie Maybe a defense mechanism - if she acts like she doesn't like her then she can act like she's not hurt by being rejected. 7y
Smangela So, I love the interaction with Audrey. Realistically you aren't going to be friends with everyone. And sometimes people will grate on your nerves or rub you the wrong way, BUT the lesson I think kids (and adults really) can take away from it is that you can still be civil and kind without having some deep, involved relationship! 7y
Smangela @amie absolutely agree, it's hard to feel rejected or disliked; her reactions to Audrey definitely seem defensive to me 7y
See All 9 Comments
Lmstraubie @Smangela @amie You ladies are taking the words right out of my mouth! I also think Charlie is jealous of Audrey. She wants the kind of family Audrey has. Charlie just doesn't realize yet that she already has that kind of family. 7y
Smangela @Lmstraubie Also, I wonder if Audrey's family life isn't perfect either, based on her reaction when Charlie talks about her father? Or maybe I'm reading into it too much haha 7y
Lmstraubie @Smangela It's funny because when I first wrote my comment I actually said, She wants the kind of family she THINKS Audrey has." But then I took it out. I don't think you are reading too much into it. Our perceptions aren't always the reality. 7y
Peddler410 Audrey... I agree with what has already been said. Charlie assumes Audrey has a perfect life. There is some jealousy there but also a defense 7y
Chelsibno I definitely agree with everything everyone has said on this point. @Smangela @Lmstraubie I think your points about how it may only seem like Audrey has a perfect family is a great point. It's so easy for kids (& adults) to be envious of another person's life or situation, when in fact those people with "perfect" lives have their own kinds of problems they have to deal with. 7y
MrsGreen In addition to everyone else's thoughts, Audrey is the cool kid. Who doesn't want to be friends with the cool kid? 7y

Question #4
How does Charlie's impression of the Odom home change over the course of the story?
#mgbuddyread

Smangela It's kind of like the reverse of The Picture of Dorian Gray, right? 😂 7y
Chelsibno At first, she thinks of the Odom house as shabby & ramshackle. She seems especially focused on how one end of the structure juts out over a steep hill/cliff, & seems to think it could topple down it at any point. I think this reflects her own views of the home she had previously known, which was both harsh & fragile, capable of easily being torn apart. By the end, she comes to realize that this is a safe & loving home, embracing it as such. (edited) 7y
Lmstraubie I love how the ramshackleness (is that a word lol) of the house falls away once Charlie falls for the family. 7y
See All 7 Comments
Peddler410 In the beginning, Charlie sees only the rundown condition of the house. As she gets to know the family, she learns that outward appearances don't mean so much. What's happening inside the home is what matters and that's love. 7y
Lmstraubie @Peddler410 I love how unconditionally the Odom family loves her. 7y
MrsGreen She was totally judgmental of their home for its outward appearance, as a defense mechanism I think. If their home was so bad, the people must be too - hillbilly like she thought they would be. I'm so glad she changed her mind when she met them all! 7y
Lmstraubie @MrsGreen It's easier to not like a place if all you see is the bad. 7y

Question #3
Howard immediately takes to Charlie. He is happy to be her Backpack Buddy and wants to help her any way he can even when Charlie treats him terribly. How would you describe Howard's character?
#mgbuddyread

Chelsibno I think Howard is the type of boy who just wants to help others & is always eager to do so. This translates into a caring attitude, as he tries to help & guide Charlie throughout the story. He seems very responsible & rule-abiding, as her takes his duties as Charlie's backpack buddy seriously & always seems mindful of any rules or expectations given by adults. 7y
Smangela When I first started reading I felt like Howard wasn't a realistic characterization of a child, but then I thought about how we only see Howard from Charlie's POV so he probably has his imperfect moments too. Also there are definitely child who take rules very seriously, my 5yo cousin is exactly like that! 7y
Chelsibno @Smangela True! I first felt like Howard was way too saint-like. Throughout most of the book, I kept thinking of him as Saint Howard, patron saint of strays. I think you're right that the perspective the novel is told in has a lot to do with how certain characters are portrayed. 7y
See All 14 Comments
Smangela @Chelsibno Saint Howard is SO fitting hahahaha!! 7y
Smangela @Chelsibno thinking on it a little further, Charlie may even look at him through rose-colored glasses because of her low self-esteem? Like the things he does seem EXTRA kind and perfect to her because she doesn't have the confidence in her self or how she reacts to things. Not to take credit away from Howard ☺️ 7y
Chelsibno @Smangela That could definitely be true! Kids, especially those with self-esteem issues, tend to look at others through rose-colored glasses. It's easy to view someone as especially good/kind/responsible/mature/etc. when you think you're none of those things. 7y
Lmstraubie @Chelsibno @Smangela I also found myself wondering how could we all learn to be a little more like Howard. I know people like him and I'm always amazed at how they so easily help other & give them the benefit of the doubt. I think Charlie also begins to see herself in a bit if a better light because of Howard's devoted friendship. 7y
Amie I think Howard wanted/needed a friend and a new person who doesn't have any preconceived ideas about him is a perfect opportunity. 7y
Smangela @Lmstraubie @Chelsibno people definitely influence you, it can be for better or worse. It's such a good feeling when you find someone who encourages and helps you to be a better person. Howard definitely gives her more self-confidence. His belief that she CAN Control her anger is something she definitely needs :) 7y
Smangela @amie That is a great point! It's easy to focus on why Charlie needs Howard and how Howard helps her, but I'm sure her friendship helps Howard too. 7y
Lmstraubie @amie That is a great point! 7y
Peddler410 Howard...I love Howard's character. Yes, he might seem a little too good, but he has a very supportive family which provides his sense of self. That in turn allows him to let things go -- the mean things others say. Having said that...Charlie is just as important to Howard as he is to herz 7y
MrsGreen Um... the best kid ever!! (Although he doesn't have a backbone) 7y
MrsGreen I also think about Howard before Charlie got there. He must have been a loner and the kids picked on him. He is definitely also benefitting from Charlie's friendship like @amie said. 7y

Question #2
Charlie spots a dog around her aunt & uncle's house. She finds out it is a stray. Charlie feels like she can relate to the dog because she thinks she is a stray too. Do you see Charlie as a stray? #mgbuddyread

*Note: I'm traveling home from vacation & my mobile data keeps going in & out. I will post as I have connection. 📶

Chelsibno I see a lot of similarities with Charlie and Wishbone personality-wise. I think in Charlie's old life, she was definitely stray-like surviving on the few scraps of affection she was given by her parents. By the time that the story begins, I think Charlie has already found a home, she just hasn't realized it yet. Just as Wishbone ran away & realized that he preferred to live with Charlie, Charlie isn't able to accept her new home until . . . 7y
Chelsibno She is told that she'll be returned to her mother's custody. I think throughout the story, she's a lot like a former stray trying to become accustomed to and accept a new home. (edited) 7y
Lmstraubie @Chelsibno Well said! I also thinks she sees herself as a stray because she thinks no one wants her. 7y
See All 6 Comments
Peddler410 I don't view Charlie as a stray however, I do understand why she sees herself that way. 7y
MrsGreen @Chelsibno I kept waiting for that moment to happen! I think it is so easy to not realize something good until it's taken away (or almost). 7y
MrsGreen @Peddler410 I can definitely understand how she sees herself that way too! I think her aunt and uncle could have done a better job explaining that they were so excited to have a child in their home earlier on. 7y

Okay #mgbuddyread friends here is question#1

Charlie has experienced a lot of turmoil in her life. What defenses does she use to help her through her day to day life?

Chelsibno Whenever she is met with any social conflict, her first instinct is to respond with physical violence, which she learned from watching her father. 7y
Smangela She copes with making wishes too (along with the angry outbursts like @Chelsibno mentioned); it's become a compulsion and it seems like way for Charlie to avoid dealing with her current family "situation." 7y
Chelsibno That is true, @Smangela. It does seem that whenever Charlie is met with a conflict that can't be solved with her fists (her family situation & her desire to catch the stray dog) her alternative response is to wish, or consider wishing, it was fixed. 7y
See All 8 Comments
Lmstraubie @Chelsibno @Smangela I agree with you both. I also thinks she shuts down. She comes from a family of little if any communication and finds it difficult to express herself even when she is sorry. 7y
Peddler410 She is reactive -- learned from her dad. She doesn't have the means to talk through her problems. Her wishes are always for the same thing and has become a necessity. 7y
Lmstraubie @Peddler410 A good point about her wishes being a necessity. As a kid a lot is out of her control and maybe the wishes give her a little feeling of control in her life. 7y
MrsGreen @Lmstraubie She definitely doesn't know how to communicate. I doubt anyone has ever taught her how to say I'm sorry or how to be remorseful for what she does in anger. 7y
Lmstraubie @MrsGreen You are so right! Until her aunt & uncle she really didn't have much of an example. Maybe Jackie to a degree, but she would have need to learn it too. 7y
