On his first night at Green Knowe, Tolly is rowed through the flooded gardens by lamplight after having travelled through a flooded England, drenched by rain. I love that this English landscape hinges between reality and fantasy; there's no solid division between the real and imagination, which is to me is a crucial element of the best children's books 💚

saresmoore Mmm, great point about children‘s lit! If the book was good enough, just reading it would blur my sense of reality in everyday life for a while. I miss that. 6mo
Chrissyreadit I love this book! I listened to it several times with my children on long car rides (many years ago) and it remains a favorite ❤️❤️❤️❤️ 6mo
rohit-sawant So wonderfully described! Love your point about the blend of the real and imaginary. 6mo

batsy @saresmoore I know, right? I miss that kind of immersion reading that totally transports me until I forget who I am. 6mo
batsy @Chrissyreadit That's lovely! I only read it recently because of a readalong hosted by @TheBookHippie and I regret not having read it as a kid! But better late than never 😁 6mo

LeahBergen I need to pull this off my shelf for a read soon. 👍🏻 6mo
saresmoore I mean, I did recapture a bit of that when I binge watched the entire series of Gossip Girl a few years ago. 😅 6mo
batsy @LeahBergen It's so lovely ❤️ 6mo
batsy @saresmoore Well, just between us, I also recaptured that feeling while watching Pretty Little Liars 😂😭 6mo

#ChildrensClassicRead2019
April selection: The Children of Green Knowe was written as the first in a series of six children‘s books set in and around fictional Green Knowe, an ancient manor house. The stories are both a descriptive and inventive children‘s adventure and a love song to the author‘s real-life home – The Manor at Hemingford Grey – built in the 1130s and purported to be the longest continually inhabited house in Britain.

Literary_Siren They made a movie from this book! Starring the illustrious Dame Maggie Smith! It‘s called From Time to Time. You can watch it on AmazonPrime Video. 7mo
TheBookHippie @Literary_Siren oh!!!! Thx!!! I‘ll watch it! 7mo

The children of green knows by Lucy Maria Boston is a modern fantasy book that was published in 2002. This is a thrilling story about a haunted manor that is found in an overgrown garden in England. There are three main characters Toby, alexander, and Linnet who have been dead for centuries. They welcome Tilly to Green Knowe. The haunted manor hides many stories and the master of the house is a great grandmother Oldknow.

I loved this book as a child. Full of ghosts, but not scary; atmospheric but not grim. I reread it recently and it holds up magnificently. I was delighted to discover that she was born in my home town, though sadly little had been made of it locally.

#CreepyKids (in today's book mail).

This is one of those children's series that I somehow missed out on as a kid. Was anyone a fan?

#HallowReads

Aleida Great cover. Never read it. 2y
Redwritinghood That one‘s new to me. Are you planning to read it soon? 2y
quirkyreader I read them all. There was even a film about it with Maggie Smith. 2y

rubyslippersreads I've never read any of these, but they went on my TBR list after I saw the film. 2y
batsy They've been on the TBR for far too long. That's a lovely edition. 2y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled New to me too, but right in my wheelhouse! 2y
ValerieAndBooks 🙋I read the Green Knowe books from the library when I was a kid— at least the ones they had!! I can even remember which section I got them from. I also remember them as being very atmospheric-creepy rather than scary-creepy if you know what I mean. I should try to find and read again! 2y
merelybookish I always mix this up with The Wolves of Willoughby Chase so I think I've read it, but I really haven't. 2y

I recently did that thing where I was so convinced I‘d love a new-to-me series that I bought all the books before even starting the first one. I have done this many more times than I‘d like to admit, to be honest. 🙄

And I actually bought mismatching covers on purpose because I really loved the Faber Classics 2-in-1 bind-up (and it was cheaper than 2 separate books!) Here‘s hoping I actually do like these #Green Knowe books! #30daysofreadathon

rubyslippersreads These have been on my TBR list for ages. 😊 2y
BucklingBookshelves @rubyslippersreads I hope you get to them someday too! I had honestly never even heard of them... then promptly got a whole set 😊 2y

Finished this book but still not sure whether I liked it. Some of the parts were great but others couldn't hold my attention and I had to fight to keep going. Might try the second one but unsure at this point. Anyone know if it gets better?

I finally picked out my stack for Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon this weekend! I'm going to attempt A-G of my Backlist Alphabet Project, plus two July releases, and The Children of Green Knowe, which comes highly recommended. (You can learn more on FranzenComesAlive.com!)

UnderTheRadarBooks I am excited to hear your thoughts on Ghost Writer. I have a couple of his books but I have yet to pick them up. 4y
