Mexico: A Novel | James A. Michener
14 posts | 7 read | 7 to read
Pulitzer Prizewinning author James A. Michener, whose novels hurtle from the far reaches of history to the dark corners of the world, paints an intoxicating portrait of a land whose past and present are as turbulent, fascinating, and colorful as any other on Earth. When an American journalist travels to report on the upcoming duel between two great matadors, he is ultimately swept up in the dramatic story of his own Mexican ancestryfrom the brilliance and brutality of the ancients, to the iron fist of the invading Spaniards, to modern Mexico, fighting through dust and bloodshed to build a nation upon the ashes of revolution. Architectural splendors, frenzied bullfights, horrific human sacrifice: Michener weaves them all into an epic human story that ranks with the best of his beloved bestselling novels. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from James A. Michener's Hawaii. Praise for Mexico Michener the storyteller at his finest . . . There are splendid and authentic scenes in the plaza de toros that are as dramatic as any written by Ernest Hemingway or Barnaby Conrad. The New York Times Book Review Astounding . . . fast-moving, intriguing . . . Michener is back in huge, familiar form with Mexico.Los Angeles Daily News An enthralling story . . . Michener artfully combines the history of Mexico with the art of bullfighting, teaching the reader about both and telling a grand story at the same time.St. Louis Post-Dispatch A novel of epic proportions, abounding in visual and historical detail.Richmond Times-Dispatch

I feel like I‘m back in Mexico. The building, decor, soccer in Spanish on all the TVs. It‘s brilliant.

This is my next travel spot from November 24th thru December 1. We will be meeting special friends from Prince Edward Island that we met in Jamaica. I like the fact that they supply sun screen and sun hat in your room. That‘s nice because you don‘t have to pack those items. They also have a handbag bar where you can borrow handbags to use. Less packing there too. More room for books! lol

rretzler Just got back from the Riveria Maya. All we got in the room were bathrobes, slippers and wonderful towel animals! Could have used the sunscreen - I think it was probably 10 pounds of our luggage allowance 🤣 5y
EadieB @rretzler I know! The free sunscreen and sun hat is a very good idea! 5y

As I was heading through #Mexico for #AugustIsATrip thought it would be a good time to take in some of the history with Michener‘s saga, and to think back to the second Bosch book in which Mexico figures significantly. Bosch heads to Mexico, what could be better!

As it happens these book covers also fit perfectly for #ReadingResolutions #Green

Bailedbailed

I'm not usually the kind of person who bails on books, but I'm moving into my second 55 hour work week and I just don't have the patience to give this book the try it deserves. I just want something effortlessly good. 😫

I'm honestly having a really anxious and sad day. I'm trying to lose my emotions in this novel but I can't seem to really get into and I'm just all panicky and irrational. Sorry litsy, I try not to rant on social media but I feel safe here and just need to vent.

Dragon Positive thoughts heading your way ! 💐 Take care of yourself. 7y

Back from a week in Mexico, where I got a lot of reading done. As promised, I stuck to 'airport' novels for the entire trip -- a decision I started to regret around day three. But I stuck to my guns and got through four books ranging from "not bad" to "how did this get published?" (reviews to follow). Needless to say, I'm eager to start something a little more challenging now.

LeahBergen I can't wait to hear about them! 8y

Mehso-so

Cheated and see I have 100 pages left. I think this book is choppy compared to others I have read. Loved Espana and Hawaii.
