Detective Maeve Kerrigan is away for a colleague's wedding, and she's enjoying an excuse to spend a beautiful fall weekend relaxing in the English countryside. It's a much-needed break from the grit and grime of her daily life on the London police force. But even at a wedding, the job is never far away.Midway through the reception, Maeve and her abrasive but loyal partner on the police force, DI Josh Derwent, are called back to London. A fellow policeman has been murdered, in a compromising position in a public park at night. And when Maeve and Derwent arrive to speak with the victim's family, his wife and daughter are surprisingly cold and reticent, which adds further layers of complexity to an already delicate investigation. And Maeve knows the victim and his family aren't the only ones with things to hide: the dark secret that her boss, Superintendent Godley, has been keeping for years is threatening to blow up in his face, and if that happens, they'll all be caught in the aftermath.Pulled between her loyalties to Godley, Derwent, the victim of a murder, and her own driving sense of right and wrong, Maeve will be forced to decide how much she's willing to risk in the name of justice in "The Kill," Jane Casey's most intimate, compelling novel yet.

Stayed up past my bedtime last night to finish the Kill. I love Maeve but this book wasn‘t a favorite of mine so far in this series. I felt like some of the story lines fell flat or rushed. But it was worth reading. I‘m starting to have a soft spot for Derwent even though he call be a dill hole. I‘d give it 3.5 🌟

👏🏻EVERY👏🏻BOOK👏🏻IS👏🏻BETTER👏🏻AND👏🏻BETTER👏🏻
To be quite frank, the first book in the Maeve Kerrigan series, The Burning, is the weakest of the series so far. Normally you‘d think it would be a sophomoric sequel that would be less than stellar, but not so!

Author Jane Casey really knows how to build the suspense. This isn‘t your run of the mill police procedural. Independent heroines, engrossing cases, and three dimensional characters!

TrishB Love this series 👍🏻 one of a handful I‘m up to date with. 5y
ReadswithWeenies @TrishB My library doesn‘t own them, so I‘ve been having to use the interlibrary loan system and it‘s agony having to wait 3 weeks for the next book to come in! This is a series that I think I will start to collect once I‘ve caught up to the last book! 5y

Det Maeve Kerrigan & DI Josh Derwent are called back to London while attending a wedding. A policeman has been murdered. The secret that her boss, Godley, has been keeping for years is going to blow up in his face. Lots of transitions going on in Maeve's life. I need to find out what will happen with Maeve's relationships & with her job. Best book of the series and makes you want to read the next book. Highly recommended!

It started off a bit slow, but it picked up quickly and I absolutely loved it! Maeve goes through many hard things in this book, which makes me love her even more. Someone is killing police officers, and no one is safe. Even though Maeve doesn‘t know it she is fiercely strong! The ending makes me want to read the next book immediately! I‘m getting a “Frieda Klein vibe” from this book. ❤️

Andrew65 Totally agree with your review, especially about the ending. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I'm starting this one today! Nice review and can't wait to read it! 5y
Tove_Reads @EadieB It gets better after the slow beginning! 5y
EadieB @Tove_Reads Good to know! 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Agree about that, took me quite a while to get into this one. 5y

Andrew65 @Tove_Reads We had set today‘s date for the Cara Black Book, I‘ve had to use audio to do it. What are your thoughts on The Kill? 5y
Tove_Reads Ok, I‘ll just catch up when I get the book. I like it, maybe not my fave in the series, but I do enjoy her writing. I love Maeve, although I don‘t always feel she‘s making the right choices. Actually, that is probably good, since people rarely act the way I want them to 😁 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I felt the second half was better than the first half, felt it took a long while to get going in the first half and for me to be that interested in the plotting. Very interesting towards the end which makes me wan to read the next one. 5y

EadieB @Tove_Reads I didn't get that message but probably won't get to it until the weekend as I haven't started A Great Deliverance or Poppet yet. @Andrew65 5y
Tove_Reads @eadieb Maybe I remember it wrong? I thought Poppet was next week. You might be right. 5y
EadieB @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 I did write down that
wk of 8/6 was Jackdaws and Police @ The Station etc.
wk of 8/13 was Poppet and A Great Deliverance,

The crime aspect of this fifth book in the series was fairly pedestrian. It was the dynamics between Maeve & others that were both intriguing & infuriating.

I do not want a Derwent/Maeve romantic pairing, & I dislike the fact that the author contrived to not only remove Maeve‘s boyfriend, Rob, from the scene but also to make him act completely out of character. Not impressed. 2⭐️

Great edition to the series! Great crime plot at the centre, but lots of other things going on in Maeve's life. Maeve is a great MC even if you want to shake her sometimes!
