For Christmas, Tolkien would write letters to his kids as Father Christmas & other characters. It is really cute, & you can even see early LOTR influences.
For this year's reread, I tried the audiobook, & it was incredible ❤️

Daisey I thought the audio was available from one of my libraries and planned to listen this time as well, but when I went to look it wasn‘t there. At some point, I do plan to try it out. 2d
JazzFeathers It is indeed so interesting to see Tolkien's major work filter into this story. A bit like it happened with The Hobbit. It's so sweet that he shared his creations with his children, in a way that they could receive. 2d

The Kill: A Novel | Jane Casey

Mehso-so

Maeve & Derwent are on the team to investigate a spate of attacks on police officers. Maeve is also struggling with her knowledge of Superintendent Godley's corruption & boyfriend Rob's preoccupation with something or someone else.

Re-reading this in a clearer state of mind than being angry at the author throwing Rob 'under the bus', I can see more nuance this time but Derwent's predatory behaviour in this one still rankles.

The Seduction of Mary Kelly | William J. Perring
post image
Pickpick

A fictional imagining of the life of Mary Jane Kelly, known to history as the fifth & final victim of Jack the Ripper in 1888. Little is definitively known about Kelly - we are even unsure as to whether that was her real name - so there's a lot of scope.

This started off a little 'Catherine Cookson' but I was quickly drawn into Mary's story which covers her early years up until leaving the village in Wales where she was born (in this story).

OutsmartYourShelf The first part was very readable, flowed well, & keeps the reader's interest. It kept things quite simple & is, therefore, very believable. This second part of the story deals with Mary's arrival & short life in London. For me, the strength of the first part was its simplicity whereas this second part starts to wander in to the more fantastical. 5d
OutsmartYourShelf The storyline becomes populated with too many side characters, including mention of Dr Doyle & the possible inspiration for his great detective. It also becomes contrived to fit with the evidence & what is known of Kelly's last days & it becomes even more unlikely as it develops. 4🌟

TWs: violence, infidelity, scenes of a sexual nature, very strong language, minor mention of animal cruelty/death.

DC Becky Greene receives some odd post at work - an advent calendar but behind every door is a photo from a crime scene. Is it a prank or is it real? An investigation into the photos reveals that they are real scenes & crimes & it seems someone has been killing for 20 years - one death a year in the month of December. Greene is paired with DS Eddie Carmine who has a link to one of the crimes. Can they catch the killer?

OutsmartYourShelf Good: the plot was quite interesting with the link to Christmas & the macabre 'advent calendar' of crime scenes. Bonus points also for the mentioning of 'American Gothic', the 1990s TV show starring Gary Cole. (Loved that show.) As soon as the name 'Lucas Buck' was mentioned, I knew. The not-so-good: I feel like the author was trying hard to force chemistry between the two police officers (Greene & Carmine) & it was just not happening. 3⭐ 6d

Red Mist: Scarpetta | Patricia Cornwell

The series seems to be back on track. Again we stick with Scarpetta instead of head hopping. Insecurities make sense, even if some previous plot lines seem washed away.

A cold case & a slew of suspicious death impacts 1 of their own. Wraps up a little quick, but the science makes sense & the connections were intriguing.

This was a cute story about Lucy, who gets a chance to relive her childhood dream when she enters into a competition by her favorite author, Jack Masterson, on Clock Island.
