I Hear the Sirens in the Street
I Hear the Sirens in the Street: A Detective Sean Duffy Novel | Adrian McKinty
19 posts | 13 read | 8 to read
A torso in a suitcase looks like an impossible case. But Sean Duffy isn't easily deterred, especially when his floundering love life leaves him in need of distraction. So, with Detective Constables McCrabban and McBride, he goes to work identifying the victim. The torso turns out to be all that's left of an American tourist who once served in the US military. What was he doing in Northern Ireland in the midst of the 1982 Troubles? The trail leads to the doorstep of a beautiful, flame-haired, twenty-something widow, whose husband died at the hands of an IRA assassination team just a few months before. Suddenly, Duffy is caught between his romantic instincts, gross professional misconduct, and powerful men he should know better than to mess with. These include British intelligence, the FBI, and local paramilitary death squads, enough to keep even the savviest detective busy. Duffy's growing sense of self-doubt isn't helping. But, being a legendarily stubborn man, he doesn't let that stop him pursuing the case to its explosive conclusion.

julesG Are you still reading the Mo Hayder series? 6y
Andrew65 @julesG Yes, hoping to read it in March but waiting for @Tove_Reads to be able to get hold of the book. Possibly later in the month. @EadieB 6y
julesG You've read the Birdman, so next up is this, right? 6y
See All 26 Comments
Andrew65 @julesG Yes sorry meant to put that in the post. 🤦‍♂️ Book 2 The Treatment is next up for us. 6y
EadieB Another great week! 6y
julesG Okay, I think I'll join you for book 5. I've read it a while ago but could do with a reread before Poppet and Wolf. 6y
Andrew65 @julesG Would be great to have you with us. 😊👍 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Helped that I had been off work for most of it. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 yes that was a big help! Just think what you could do if you were retired! 6y
julesG @EadieB Retired people are always busy. They never have time for anything. 😉😁 6y
EadieB @julesG My reading always comes first. If we do or go anywhere, I always bring my books. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB @julesG I look forward to finding out. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 it‘s going to be mind-blowing! 6y
julesG @EadieB Well, I must be doing something wrong. 😉😉 6y
EadieB @julesG I don‘t thing it‘s a matter of doing something wrong as it is an addiction. Depends on how addicted you are. My family thinks it‘s wrong but I think they are wrong. So when I start to bother them, I sneak to a different room or put my books away and in a couple of minutes I‘ll tell my husband that it‘s time to go home because I would rather be with my books instead of people. I guess it‘s anti-social but...oh well! 6y
julesG @EadieB I'm like that, too. But I try to spend a lot of time with my kids. So I don't read as much at the weekend. Any other time, my kindle is always by my side. 6y
EadieB @julesG I can‘t read when I babysit my three grandchildren either because they are 5, 2, and 4 months. Keeps me too busy! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB 🤣😂🤣😂 It‘s definitely an addiction. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 It‘s a good one though! Take it from someone who is addicted! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Most definitely! 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB @Andrew65 I‘m first in line for the ebook, so will get it within 2 weeks. 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @EadieB Just picked up The Reckoning. Do we read it next week? 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Could possibly start on 7th. @EadieB 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 7th is good for me too. @Tove_Reads 6y
catebutler I love how you break down your stats! You do marvellously each week! 6y
Andrew65 @catebutler Thanks, keeps me focused on my challenges and which ones I need to focus on more. Also allows me to review how my reading is going. (edited) 6y

Really enjoying this series which takes place during the Troubles in Northern Ireland in the 80's. A body is found in a suitcase and Sean Duffy needs to identify the victim. Soon Duffy is involved with romance, misconduct, the FBI, British Intel and local death squads. I'm now looking forward to the 3rd book and highly recommend this series to those who like to read about the Ireland Troubles in the 80's.

I enjoyed the second book in the McKinty series. The setting is so plain honest and brutal in the 80s ‘Norn Iron‘. The music is the only good thing, otherwise it‘s IRA or loyalist bombs, Falkland war, weird people and constant rain. Let‘s not forget about murder. It‘s not that long ago, but times were so different before the internet and smoking bans. Highly recommend this series! The pace could have been brisker in the middle of the book.

JaclynW This is a fun series so far! I can't wait to continue! 6y
EadieB @JaclynW I‘m enjoying this series too! We are reading next one April 1 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB @JaclynW Haven‘t read the synopsis for the next one, because I don‘t want to. The ending was so dramatic in a way that it has to be an important part of the next book. 6y
See All 9 Comments
JaclynW @Tove_Reads @eadieb @andrew65 I also don't want to read any summaries! It is fun to go into it blind I think. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I never read the synopsis. I wonder what is ahead after his change of role. @EadieB @JaclynW 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads @JaclynW @andrew65 I haven‘t read the synopsis either. I don‘t own the book. Have to get it from the library. I‘m reading along with the audio on Hoopla. 6y
JaclynW @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads @EadieB I can only imagine how hard the demotion would be for Duffy. But I'm guessing he's going to work something out to be back on top. He's quite clever! We may be in for more drinking and women while he works it out though. 🤨 6y
Andrew65 @JaclynW I wouldn‘t be surprised. 6y

End of day 2 of the #24B4Monday #Readthon and spent the day reading these three books, 1 for Black History Month, the other two for Buddy Reads.

Over 2 days I‘ve finished 2 books and read a total of 16 hours 27 mins at quite a metronomic pace. 8 hrs 14 minutes yesterday, 8 hours 13 minutes today. Couldn‘t have done that if I tried! 😳🙄 If I keep this pace up I am on track for 24 hours.

In total read 916 pages.

Linsy Nice! 👍 6y

PickwickPlockPlock I'm reading too much fantasy. I read the title and thought of another kind of siren. Wondering what she was doing on tje street. 🙈 6y

Tex2Flo Looking for a new thriller series. What is the Sean Duffy claim to fame? 6y
Tove_Reads I read the second part this morning. Just came back from (yet another) funeral. Might read the third section today. 6y
Andrew65 @Tex2Flo These are set in the 1980s during the troubles in Northern Ireland. Sean is a Detective Sergeant. My favourite Detective Series are Inspector Banks (Peter Robinson), Rebus (Ian Rankin) and Roy Grace (Peter James). Of course you may have read these. 6y
Tex2Flo @Andrew65 all completely new to me so well welcome. Thanks 👏🏽👏🏽 6y
SconsinBookyBadger Enjoy your book for the readathon! 6y
Andrew65 @AnansiGirl Thanks, now finished it and was an excellent read. 6y

Started reading the second Sean Duffy book. So far so good! I have to say I enjoy reading books set before internet took over. All the effort the police had to put in to get information.

Andrew65 I will be starting later today. 6y
andrew61 Enjoy - i love this series, hoping he will hurry up and write a new one. 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew61 If my memory is working there might be one coming out this year. Not sure though. 6y

JaclynW Police work (LIFE!) was definitely different before the internet! I love Duffy's record collection too --->before CDs, iPods, iTunes and Spotify! @Andrew65 @EadieB 6y
EadieB @JaclynW I‘m going to read the 2nd section today after I finish Tombland! @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @JaclynW Music certainly seems a strong element of the book, reminds me of the Inspector Banks series in that by Peter Robinson. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Me too (but not the Tombland part) 🤣 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb It‘s sometimes so pleasantly dated. It‘s not that old, but makes you realize how times have changed. How they listen to music, the smoking everywhere etc. 6y
JaclynW @Tove_Reads Times have changed so much! I enjoy the same thing about these books for the same reason. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads @JaclynW Finished the book and really enjoyed it. After I finished I felt like I wanted to delve right into the next one. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Me too, a much better book than book 1. What next for Duffy now! @Tove_Reads (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 When do we read the next one? 6y
Andrew65 Not until Monday 1st April. @EadieB @Tove_Reads 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Ok. I‘m going to Florida from April 3rd to April 8th. My daughter is taking another acupuncture course and we are taking the baby this time. We go again in the beginning of June. 6y
JaclynW @EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I've enjoyed getting to know the characters more. I like getting in Duffy's head and trying to guess what he's going to do next. I'm excited for the next one too. It ended with quite a life changing bang. I could do without all the womanizing though.... is this just the times or his personality? I've lost count at the number of women he's been with.😄 6y
Tove_Reads @JaclynW It really annoyed me in the first book how he treated Laura. I guess this could be the old timey coppers. Smoking cigarettes and pot, womanizing, getting hammered all the time. That feels so dated now. Of course there are people and policemen like that today, but they are portaited differently in books set today. 6y
JaclynW @Tove_Reads Yes, I wondered that. A bit stereotypical of that profession. 6y

The #AdrianMckintyBuddyRead continues on 22nd February with book 2 in the Sean Duffy Series.

It‘s quite a shortish book so have split it into three sections:
Friday 22nd Chapters 1 - 11
Saturday 23rd Chapters 12 - 22
Sunday 24th Chapters 23 - 33 and Epilogue

Everyone is welcome to join us. Set amongst the streets of Northern Ireland during the troubles

EadieB @andrew65 What‘s one more book! Plus we have to get to 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB We do. 🤣🤣🤣 That‘s why I‘m trying to finish this one for 24th. At least Circle of Friends is a slower read than normal. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Ha Ha! We can do it! Let it be said that we always look a challenge in the eye! 6y
See All 30 Comments
Andrew65 @EadieB And usually succeed! Failure is a Street we walk straight past! 🤣 (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I like that! Me too! Failure is not in my vocabulary! 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @EadieB I am second on hold to get The Treatment as an ebook (probably takes 2-3 weeks to get it). Can we read Hornet Flight first? Can you get it for the beginning on the month? I own it. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I can most probably get to Hornet Flight when I next get to the library (around 2nd March). We also have book 2 in the Jane Casey Series and Mo Hayder Series to schedule in for March. As well as Maeve Binchy too, oh and Tombland 🤣I will look at a possible schedule for March later to see what is feasible. (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Treatment is Hayder. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Right, Thanks - so we can schedule that for the end of the month. 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Reckoning in the middle? Before Maeve? 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Sounds about right. 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 👍🏽 Which Maeve in March? 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB @andrew65 March will be an insane reading month for me. But I can do it! 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Firefly Summer In March. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads For all of us but we can do it. 😊 @EadieB 6y
RaimeyGallant I want to do this, but I don't have the book yet and I'm on an editing deadline. :) 6y
Andrew65 @RaimeyGallant Good luck with the deadline. Whenever you get to the book tag us in and we‘ll discuss it then. 😊 (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Cool, I‘ll try to get all the books I need! Should have most of them, and I‘ll get them March 2, and I‘ll have them for four weeks (Treatment excluded). 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Firefly Summer is only available in a nice little three books in one, with nearly 900 pages. When are we reading Silver Wedding? 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Most probably Read that in April. Firefly Summer is one of her biggest books. 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Cool, then I don‘t have to carry that monstrosity back and forth... 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Then we will most probably do The Copper Beech in May. 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Sadly that‘s not the third one 😂 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads What is the third one? 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 The Lilac Bus, so useless now that we‘ve already read it. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Oh well, at least you won‘t need it out again. 6y
EadieB @andrew65 @Tove_Reads My book has 3 books in it too: The Lilac Bus which we already read, Firefly Summer and Silver Wedding. I own the book so I won‘t have to use the library. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB My library has all these three available as ebooks. @Tove_Reads 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I also have a separate book of Silver Wedding so when we are done with Circle of Friends I can get rid of the 900 page book. 6y

The ending was a bit rushed... and utterly bonkers... but everything up to that point was rather good. Better than my memory of the first with a sense of the period - 1982 - that was both corny and recognizable. There was some real police work here among all the false leads and dodgy suspects, and politics and religion. Properly interesting and entertaining. Turns out there are already four more in the series for me to read. Yummy.

charl08 Great series this. Worth it for the Delorean refs alone imho... 7y
andrew61 I read bk3 earlier this year and it's a good read as well. 7y

Book 2 of the Sean Duffy series done... what I love most about these books is how they take a piece of history and incorporate elements into a crime novel, this one featured the infamous DeLorean. The narrator on these books is terrific

This is the second in a crime series set in 1983 Belfast with the principal detective a Catholic in the Ruc. Very enjoyable and i especially love characters who reference books they are reading hence 'Shoeless Joe' by W P Kinsella- I've had some great experiences of these hidden references in books so i will look it up.

Lindy Ha! Kinsella was born in Edmonton, Alberta, where I live. 😊 8y

While I loved Gerard Doyle's narration of The Dead Trilogy (by Adrian McKinty), I thought he sounded off-note in the novel of The Troubles Trilogy, 'The Cold, Cold Ground', so I've switched to print for the second Sean Duffy book
