I thought my #FellowshipOfTolkien group might find this interesting…. https://www.tor.com/2021/06/10/tolkiens-orcs-boldog-and-the-host-of-tumult/?prev...

@Daisey @JazzFeathers @wordslinger42 @BookwormAHN

Oh, and PS… are we still thinking of tackling Kullervo later this month?

BookwormAHN Nice article and I thought we were going to start on our anniversary on July 18th. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookwormAHN Oh! You‘re right! I thought it was June 18th for some reason, but now that I see this, you‘re right it‘s July. 3y

Daisey Really interesting article! Also while we‘re checking in, is it my turn to work out a schedule? If so, I have my copy and will add that to my to list. 3y
JazzFeathers I know Jeff very well. He's such a great Tolkien fan 😃 3y
JazzFeathers @Daisey l don't remember who did the last schedule. This says it's really too long since we read together 😆 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers I‘m pretty sure you did the last schedule for the last Histories of Middle Earth, but I know you and @Daisey read one since (places that inspired Tolkien I believe), but I‘m not sure who did a schedule for that. 3y
Daisey @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers I‘ll work on one! Starting July 18, correct? 3y

#FellowshipOfTolkien

Loved this beginning of incomplete story.
I would have lived to see a story from the perspective of the Wild People of Middle-earth. After The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien seems to be fascinated with different perspective.
Pity he never completed this story.

Daisey Agreed! I found this an interesting concept as well. 4y

#FellowshipOfTolkien

It's a very strange beginning. I have conflicting tellings about it.
On the one end, l'm intrigued by the dark atmosphere, with the possible involvement of secret societies and cults. On the other, l see why Tolkien ended up abandoning it: there would be no magic left in this world and for him this meant there would be very little hope.

I was intrigued, but not as much as with other uncompleted stories by Tolkien.

I‘m not going to lie, I struggled with the beginning of this one, the language and family tree developments have never been my favorites, or the calendars and dating discrepancies, BUT by the second half of Part I, when more stories started mingling in with that info then it really picked up for me. So if you are also lagging way behind, it does pick up! #FellowshipOfTolkien

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I have finally finished this one #FellowshipOfTolkien, a few months later than our schedule, but I did it. The entire histories of Middle Earth are complete! Whew! 4y

Daisey Finishing this one and the series as a whole definitely feels like an accomplishment! I also agree with your review. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey Thank you. Some of the stories buried in there are great, I just felt like they got a bit buried. Although I found myself intrigued by the language by the end, the fact that both men & dwarves repeated famous names again and again out of history, but elves who live forever...no repeats...which I found especially intriguing since they were separated into different bands for long ages with no communications and that their names were all ⤵️ 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ based on the language. Wise One, Fiery Haired, sings like Nightingale....it seems odd that such basic name meaning would pop up as multiple groups had children and were separated long enough to develop different languages. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey I also loved the tidbit that Feanor, wanted a bit of Galadriel‘s hair too, because it seemed it shown like the light of the 2 trees, but she refused ....so Gimli got a token of her favor that was denied Feanor. 4y
JazzFeathers Only two chapters left for me. I should finish soon. I agree with your review. Some parts were hard, but l've lived all the stories. 4y

I can usually count on Dickens gift for unusual names, but after Bingo & company I knew Tolkien had a gift too, but today I found out Celeborn‘s real name is Teleporno

Oh Tolkien! ? Yes Teleporno is his true Quenya name!

Funnier yet, I had to google this on the Tolkien gateway site. It means: “The name is composed of telepi and orno (Primitive Elvish ornâ "uprising, tall").” So silver tall or silver uprising...

#FellowshipofTolkien

BookwormAHN I'm really glad he rethought those 😸 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookwormAHN I may just be getting punchy reading all these names, that this one jumped out to me....but this IS his real name the telep-orno just became celeb-orn was just a shift in spelling and pronunciation when they left the blessed realm so the Elves of middle earth (the Sindarian elves who didn‘t speak Quenya) could pronounce it. Between Galadriel and him at home, they both spoke Quenya, so Teleporno is what she called him at home. (edited) 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookwormAHN Galadriel was originally Alatariel or Naltariel. The Alat- or Nalt- translating to Galat- in Sindarian 4y

BookwormAHN As long as Bingo Baggins never surfaces I wish Teleporno well. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookwormAHN 😂🤣 makes me wonder where the poor elven souls are that came back to Middle Earth and their names going forward suffered odd translation incidents. 4y

I've always been fascinated with the story of the Edain and l greatly enjoyed reading about them once more.
I liked the way Tolkien tried to bound all humans together, the same way Elves are.
As always, Tolkien underlines how choices creates destiny, and l think that in this retelling of the coming of Ment into the West, he made choices even more important.

I'm really enjoying this section dedicated to the Dwarves and the Men.
I remember reading in previous books that the Dwarves were the very first to meet the Men in Middle-earth, but l don't remember reading before that the original language of Men probably derived from that of the Dwarves.

I'm quite intrigued by this relation.

I rearranged my Tolkien shelves again as I finished this final book in the History of Middle-Earth. I would only recommend these books to a serious Tolkien fan, but if that‘s the case, they are worth the effort. This one focuses on the Appendices of LotR and some later writings. The final stories were really just beginnings, but again with a hint of such potential for more stories in this well-developed world.

#FellowshipOfTolkien

JazzFeathers Oh my goodness. I think l'm the last one who still needs to finish this 😭 #FellowshipOfTolkien 4y
Daisey @JazzFeathers It‘s perfectly ok! Take the time you need. I will say in my opinion, the last story is worth getting to, although it is just a hint of possibility. 4y

I fit in a few more pages tonight. I found the additional discussion of Glorfindel and Cirdan in this section fascinating. It makes me wish we had seen more of a Cirdan in the Lord of the Rings. He is another character that exists through so many layers of the history and we only get to see tiny pieces.

This last book on the History of Middle Earth. The two best parts for me were the unfinished stories of The New Shadow and the tale of Tal-elmar. The whole book as usual was really well done and I can't imagine how difficult putting all this together was.

I've always been fascinated by Tolkien background stories for The Lord of the Ring. They make a lot of sense.
And l don't know why, l've always had a soft spot for the Northern line of the Heirs of Elendil and for Arvedui in particular.
But the story of the Sourhern line Is seriously awesome. All those character and all those events.

This is one of those sections where the continuous lists of names (and notes on reordering) can start to make your eyes glaze over. However, as with so much of Tolkien‘s writing, I feel like I understand it and catch a little more with every reading. I‘ve read the lines of the kings and stewards before, but I felt I noticed more of the interesting details of the history this time.

#FellowshipOfTolkien

JazzFeathers The commentari was a bit dry, but l loved the actual chronology. But then, l've always loved these stories. 4y
Daisey I agree about the chronology, well I guess I should say this time. I haven‘t always appreciated the details about the kings this much. 4y

l never tire to read about Numenor. l'm fascinated with the evolution of the story, which, from The Lost Road to the Notion Club Paper, it's very very peculiar.

In this examination, l was particularly interested in reading about Queen Ar Zimphrael. In the Silmarillion, we may sense she had a special place in the story, and still she remains in the shadow. I wish Tolkien had manager to write more about her.

Not only did Tolkien invent multiple languages, but he wrote out an explanation of the reasoning behind the fictional translation of stories written by hobbits into English. This includes a few pages of explanations of the “original” and “translated” hobbit names. While reading this I couldn‘t help but think of the early versions about Bingo who later became Frodo, as both are mentioned in this explanation.

I love it when Tolkien treats his invented books as if the were real. It's like all his passions (linguistics, ancient languages and storytelling) came together.

I had never realised that LotR was conceived as a translation of the book Bilbo and Frodo wrote. I mean, l should have guessed, but l didn't. So l found all the considerations about translation particularly fascinating.

Daisey I just read more of this section tonight. I clearly remember this translation aspect of the stories, and this description of names and such was fascinating to me. 4y

Loved reading about the changed to the Prologue.
I know that many first-time readers complain about it, but Tolkien was answering questions his readers had and since social media didn't exist, l suppose that was the next best thing he could do 😆
