Shortest Day: Celebrating the Winter Solstice
Shortest Day: Celebrating the Winter Solstice | Wendy Pfeffer
10 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
The science, history, and cultural significance of the shortest day of the year: The Winter Solstice! The beginning of winter is marked by the solstice, the shortest day of the year. Long ago, people grew afraid when each day had fewer hours of sunshine than the day before. Over time, they realized that one day each year the sun started moving toward them again. In lyrical prose and cozy illustrations, this book explains what the winter solstice is and how it has been observed by various cultures throughout history. Many contemporary holiday traditions were borrowed from ancient solstice celebrations. "Using clear, concise language, Pfeffer discusses important ideas behind the shortest day of the year, such as the change from autumn to winter as well as the concept of the Earth's tilting away from the sun . While appealing to a younger audience, this treatment combines the cultural approach of Ellen Jackson'sThe Winter Solstice(Millbrook, 1994) and the activities of Sandra Markle'sExploring Winter(Atheneum, 1984; o.p.). Pfeffer uses an easy, comfortable tone for conveying the basic information, and the end pages will provide additional opportunities for would-be astronomers to explore the principles on their own." School Library Journal Simple science activities, ideas for celebrating the day in school and at home, and a further-reading list are included."

I'm having fun researching yule/solstice info for #yuleswap. Here is a wonderful folk tale I discovered about the Deer Mother https://youtu.be/AvzgyYhAY2w?si=x8kPhnhnRxoar8I4 It features a (wait for it...) flying reindeer! 🤔

Came home from spending Thanksgiving with my in-laws to find this bookish goodness on my doorstep! My #wintersolsticeswap from @erank58 arrived. 🎉❄️✨

+ my first box for The Ripped Bodice‘s Romance of the Month Club. I‘ve been looking for a book subscription box that isn‘t just popular titles or YA. I didn‘t want so many extra goodies, but I didn‘t want only books either. I love romance so I thought I‘d try this one. Contents coming in next post…

slategreyskies Oh, I‘m looking forward to seeing what‘s in the box! 💕 3y
erank58 Yay! So glad it arrived safely! 3y

Happy Solstice to any Littens who celebrate this occasion. In the northern hemisphere our days will be getting longer and I'm looking forward to more light. The Google doodle (above) marks the great conjunction of jupiter and saturn, which I was able to see in the sky last night. Very cool.

Happy Winter Solstice! Happy winter break!
In China and parts of East and SouthEast Asia, Winter Solstice Festival (Dongzhi) is an important celebration. Families will get together to have a meal and the making and eating of sweet dumplings (glutinous rice balls) in ginger soup symbolise reunion.

TrishB Beautiful picture. The solstice was always important here too, part of the reason Christmas was put this time of the year. 6y

Happy Winter Solstice, Littens!
The Winter Solstice Festival or Dongzhi Festival is celebrated in China and East Asia during the winter months and is to celebrate the return of longer daylight hours. Traditionally, it‘s a time for families to get together and enjoy a meal that includes tong yuen - glutinous rice flour balls, which symbolise harmony and togetherness. Our family will have a big get-together today. Lots of socialising, no reading!

BarbaraBB This looks great. Have fun 💕 7y

Today I literally ran down the streets of San Francisco (thankfully not up 😰) hugging a box full of these #SecretSantaGoesPostal #WinterSolsticeBookExchange goodies in my arms but I made it to the post office with ten minutes to spare and now it‘s on its way to a certain Litten... who could that be???? You‘ll have to wait until the 21st to find out! @MrBook @BookBabe @Avanders

Happy Solstice! ❄️ I am definitely feeling it this year...a very needed holiday to reflect and meditate on what's before and what's to come. I go to this poem/song every year ("Song of Solstice" by Jennifer Cutting's Ocean Orchestra), and I'm so happy to share it with you. A friend of mine said that today is the day when the faraway light starts to come back to us. Remember that. ❤

SusanInTiburon Thanks for this! ⛅️ 8y
