This will be my 1st 5* + my 1st willy vlautin. The story is of ordinary Americans just abt surviving in a society where life is tough. We follow Leroy, an Iraq veteran, who wants to kill himself, + his dreams in a hospital bed .Pauline is a nurse working hard shifts, and Freddie manages the home where Leroy lives as well as in a hardware store. Incredibly moving, a sorry story of America, brilliant characterisation, + a compelling bleak tale.

Not much of a plot but so, so sad. Not feeling very patriotic after this one

I have been spending the week in my parents‘ beach cottage. Working, reading and doing daytrips across the border into Belgium. Things could have been worse!
Of the books above I enjoyed the tagged one and Loner a lot. Such a Fun Age was enjoyable too, The Shepherd‘s Hut was okay.

Leroy, a wounded Iraq war veteran tries to kill himself. He winds up on life support and decides to retreat into a morphinated fantasy life. In the mean time Freddie, who witnessed Leroy's suicide attempt, and Pauline, his nurse, are engaged in their own struggles with modern America: the inequities of health care, the crush of debt, loneliness. Their kind, brave characters are touching - as is the book

I love all of Willy Vlautin‘s books, but be warned that all of them will make you cry. They‘re all about good people in seemingly hopeless situations, but it‘s worth seeing it through to the end every time.
“I know we‘re all tired. But the main thing to do when you‘re tired is to remember to be nice. Remember to be kind...”

Fantastic book. Wonderful. A must read for Fans of Brautigan and Atwood. Loved it.

Love the tenderness between the characters. Yes, when having a crap day, be kind to yourself. Great advice.

This book made me tear-up more than once. Such tender characters. On a train, hence the blur.

My father-in-law lent me this a while ago. I've had Bookclub books log-jamming my tbr pile but I've cast one aside for something different and this certainly fits the bill. Am loving it so far.
