Beaches, Bungalows and Burglaries
Beaches, Bungalows and Burglaries | Tonya Kappes

Welcome to Normal, Kentucky where nothing is normal. A Campers and Criminal Mystery Series is another brainchild of USA Today Bestselling Author Tonya Kappes. If you love her quirky southern characters and small town charm with a mystery to solve, you're going to love her new cozy mystery series! Mae West, a far cry from the Hollywood actress, has been thrown for a loop. Her plush lifestyle in the big city of New York comes to a screeching halt after the FBI raids her mansion and arrests her husband, Paul West, for a Ponzi scheme that rips people out of millions of dollars. Mae finds herself homeless, friendless, and penniless. All hope isn't lost. . .the only thing Mae got to keep that the government didn't seize is a tourist camp ground, Happy Trails, in Normal, Kentucky and an RV to live in. One problem, Mae's idea of camping has room service. By the look of the brochure, Happy Trails has plush Kentucky Bluegrass, a crystal clear lake, a beach chair with her name on it and thoughts of how much money it could bring her after she sells it. Mae figures she'll take a couple weeks vacation with her toes dipped in the lake. Things aren't always as they appear. The Kentucky Bluegrass is nothing but dirt and the crystal clue lake is murky with green slime on top. Mae quickly find out that Happy Trails and the citizens of Normal were also victims of Paul's schemes, making her lower than tha lake scum in the residents' eyes. Mae doesn't think things could get much worse, but as luck would have it, Paul West has escaped from prison and is found dead, murdered, floating in the Happy Trails mucky green lake. Mae is the number one suspect on Detective Hank Sharp's short list. After all, Mae has the perfect motive as a kept wife who has been scorned to ashes, embarrassed to death, and seeking revenge. Time is running out for Mae to prove that she's innocent and nothing like her husband. If only she could get someone to believe her and talk Detective Sharp into looking at other residents who've lost all their savings to Paul's Ponzie scheme before the curtain is closed on this Hollywood namesake.

A quick #audiobook listen!

A good backstory for Mae West, which shows a nice juxtaposition from city life to small town life.

Some details a bit exaggerated, like getting a campground ready for a fundraiser on three days!

Too much fluff writing of daily life, not enough mystery solving.

I recently rediscovered this charming mystery series after stumbling upon it in a new local bookstore that specializes in Kentucky authors and books set in the state. I was pleasantly surprised by the first book in the series, which exceeded my expectations.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I have a love/hate relationship with this series - I‘m up to #20. They‘re mostly fun reads with decent mysteries… 4mo
NatalieR @Tamra Very true! 🌻 4mo
NatalieR @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I can understand loving and hating the series. You‘ve read a lot of them! At least they are short, quick books. 4mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @NatalieR, there‘s a couple of ongoing storylines that make me roll my eyes but I guess that‘s to be expected in such a long running series. I introduced a friend to them - and she lapped me 🙃 and is up to date (or as up to date as her library is) 4mo
NatalieR @thegirlwiththelibrarybag Yeah, it does give me pause when a series runs so long. Sometimes they can go on longer than they should. Glad your friend is enjoying it too. 😀 4mo

This was a cute book, but I wasn't super into all the characters, so I don't think I'll continue the series.

Finished it while taking a staycation at Foxwoods (for some retail therapy).

Need to get moving (laying in bed is not helping my mental health). Found this #SeasonalCozies on Libby that is only 5 hours long. Should be able to use this as motivation to do some cleaning

I have been on a cozy mystery kick lately and this series about Mae West, owner of Happy Trails Campground, and her friends The Laundry Club Ladies solving mysteries in Normal, KY were fun cozy reads 🥰

Cute read with likable characters. The editing is pretty bad. I‘m willing to read the next in the series in spite of that.

I listened to the audiobook of this book. I liked the book. I just do think I enjoyed the narrator too much. I rated this book a 3 out of 5 stars.

How many book tracking apps do you use? I use 3/ Goodreads, StoryGraph, and Bookmory. I really love the visual calendar of Bookmory, and here‘s what I read this month! *keep in mind that I listen to audiobooks at a faster speed and can listen while I do my main job

Soubhiville I just quit Goodreads, so just StoryGraph. 🙂 2y
Cinfhen Im loving this app but im having trouble adding books read / completed if I need to date back. How were you able to display multiple books on the same day?? They stacked one on top of another on my book calendar 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2y
MidnightBookGirl @Cinfhen you need to go to setting on the app and pick Book Calendar settings, then pick Grid instead of Stacking for the view 2y

TheBookgeekFrau I just downloaded Bookmory yesterday bc I love this calendar feature! 2y
MissyD I use the same 3. Plus my reading bullet journal & my reading spread sheet, 2y

I haven‘t started a niche cozy mystery series in ages! We‘ve got the town with a funny name (Normal, Kentucky), the quirky side characters (the bored librarian, the cheerful pastors wife, the detective with southern charm, the grumpy chef) & the MC - the young former wife of a man convicted of a Ponzi scheme who ends up the main murder suspect when he ends up floating in the lake of the campsite she got in the divorce. I enjoyed this on audio.

I've read this series all out of order. I've mostly been toward the newer stuff, so I decided to go back to the first book. It was great seeing how it all began. Seeing the people at the beginning is a little strange because I already know how some things turn out.

The story was good, I actually think it was one of the better mysteries I have read recently. Some moments were hilarious and actually made me laugh out loud.

Spent the evening audio listening to the tagged, assembling a puzzle and reading a magazine. It‘s been kinda hot here so they were relaxing activities done in air conditioned comfort. 😂

This mystery novel is exactly what you would expect it to be - a light, easy and somewhat cheesy read. 🧀 This type of book is the comfort food of books for me, and I'm honestly not sure why I don't read them more often.

I get the low rating. The book is predictable and so vanilla. The main character isn‘t really like able...most of them aren‘t BUT it‘s such an easy mindless read. I‘d almost consider it a guilty pleasure.

I don‘t remember any beaches, bungalows or more than one burglary. I listened to the audiobook, and reading reviews I would skip the ebook. ....Up most instead of utmost, your and you‘re type errors. #cozymystery so I overlooked several problems with the plot.
