A jaded spy and a shell-shocked country doctor team up to solve a murder in postwar England.James Sommers returned from the war with his nerves in tatters. All he wants is to retreat to the quiet village of his childhood and enjoy the boring, predictable life of a country doctor. The last thing in the world he needs is a handsome stranger who seems to be mixed up with the first violent death the village has seen in years. It certainly doesn't help that this stranger is the first person James has wanted to touch since before the war.The war may be over for the rest of the world, but Leo Page is still busy doing the dirty work for one of the more disreputable branches of the intelligence service. When his boss orders him to cover up a murder, Leo isn't expecting to be sent to a sleepy village. After a week of helping old ladies wind balls of yarn and flirting with a handsome doctor, Leo is in danger of forgetting what he really is and why he's there. He's in danger of feeling things he has no business feeling. A person who burns his identity after every job can't set down roots. As he starts to untangle the mess of secrets and lies that lurk behind the lace curtains of even the most peaceful-seeming of villages, Leo realizes that the truths he's about to uncover will affect his future and those of the man he's growing to care about.

Absolutely loved this book. Set after WWII James moves to a small English village and is the village doctor. A death happens that appears to be mysterious. So, Leo is sent by his boss to investigate. James recognizes Leo even though he gives a false background from the war. James has PTSD from the war and Leo is triggering it. And they team up to find the killer. This is a M/M romance.

Thanks for the rec Book Riot! #getTBR

Laughterhp It‘s also set in December and celebrate Christmas at the end of the book, if you need a Christmas mystery book! 1y
Bookzombie I loved this one too. There is a second book out, in case you didn‘t know. I haven‘t got to it yet. 1y

Received my quarterly TBR recs from Book Riot today! #GetTBR

Haven‘t heard of any of these books and they all sound great! They sound like they‘ll be good for the season as well.

Suet624 How does the Bookriot TBR work? 2y
Monica5 I would like to know as well 😏 2y
Laughterhp @Suet624 @Monica5 There are 2 options. You can get just book recs or you can get copies of the books they recommend. You fill out a questionnaire that tells them your favorite books, tv shows, movies, books you love, books you hate, what your tastes are. You can send them your goodreads so they can see what you‘ve read or currently have on your TBR. And they give you 3 recs a quarter. You can give them feedback, etc. 2y
See All 7 Comments
Laughterhp You can also ask for additional recs outside of the quarter. Sometimes the books are really good and I always ask for books I‘ve never heard of before! https://mytbr.co 2y
Monica5 @Laughterhp Thank you 2y
Monica5 @Laughterhp I am going to check it out ☺️ 2y

I usually don‘t enjoy romances but something about this one called out to me.

TheKidUpstairs Love the cover, seems very non traditional for a romance! 2y

Finished my reread, so now I feel ready to read the sequel! I do love how good James is, and how Leo falls for him because he keeps being so kind despite everything, and how James falls for Leo because despite all his bluster about being a bad man, he wants to find the solution without messing up everyone's relationships.

#BookSpinBingo continues apace -- I expect to finish two lines this month, for once! Outside chance I could go for three.

This was a cute cozy mystery romance. It takes place post WW2 in a small town in England, so total charming set up. However, it never really caught my attention and I found myself skimming quite a bit. I think I just need more suspense and tension in my mysteries. Well written so I‘m giving this a pick, just not my favorite. 3.5⭐️

The second in the series isn‘t in the database. For those who want a romance with more sweetness than spice, I highly recommend this post WWII murder mystery/historical romance. #lgbtqia The audio is by the incomparable Joel Leslie!!

Kicking off the year with a pretty great reading month! (The page for The MissingPage remains missing, lol 😂) I definitely leaned hard on some favorite rereads in the first half of the month. I regret nothing. 😊 I posted the review for my favorite January read a few days ago - the big take away being that it‘s a sweet, nuanced romance - wrapped in a cozy, Agatha Christie-esque, mystery. It builds beautifully on the previous book and ups the ante

silentrequiem Which was the DNF? 2y
the.bookish.valkyrie @silentrequiem I didn‘t include it in the graphic. It was actually a non fiction book I‘ve been working my way through for months and this was the month I gave up! It‘s a great writing craft book but I was trying to read it in the wrong format for me. I‘ll probably try to pick it up again down the line in audio. Non fiction always works better for me in audio. 2y

Still no page for The Missing Page, so I‘m posting my review here:

Oh my goodness, I really enjoyed this cozy romantic mystery! What seems like a straight forward mystery is complex & has wonderful resolutions. Their romance has so many sweet nuances & quietly explosive emotions. With a slower beginning that subtly snow balls into briskly paced revelations, this book is even better than Hither, Page. I look forward to future rereads with relish!

the.bookish.valkyrie Is it too much Dad Joke Energy to point out that it‘s funny that the *page* for, The Missing Page, is *missing*? 😂 IDK, but it made me laugh. 2y
Reggie Lol. I found it funny. 2y
Bookzombie Lol. Also, I‘m excited to hear it‘s even better than the first one, because I really enjoyed Hither, Page. 2y

The way Sebastian grows this relationship gives me all the warm fuzzies. I've read so many books where the couple comes to an understanding in Book One, and Book Two opens with already a misunderstanding and separation -- a will-they-or-won't-they forced to drive reader engagement that I find vexing. But Leo and James are utterly different here.

The Missing Page (Sebastian)
#notthetaggedbook

esurient It's a romance in a mix of 'I don't deserve to be so lucky', 'and now what do I do', 'but wait, he wants... the same?' that I found utterly charming. 2y
esurient And I found that I heartily enjoyed the mystery angle here, too. Every part, which almost never happens for me -- mysteries are not my preferred genre. 2y
esurient All in, very solid cozy pick. I'm laying bets that Book Three (more) involves a spying angle. 2y

esurient @shanaqui Soon! It will wait for you! 2y
shanaqui @esurient I'm more enthusiastic than ever now that you've said it doesn't end up with a forced will-they-or-won't-they. :D That does drive me mad sometimes in series like this. 2y

When Page looked back on this case, he didn't want to remember that he had made James Sommers lie. 'Can I buy you dinner? Is there anywhere to eat other than the Rising Sun?' It was too many questions all at once, a sign of nervousness, and Leo wanted to kick himself.
James opened his mouth and snapped it shut, then ran his hands through his hair. It was as if they were having a nervous habit contest. 'The Rising Sun is fine.'

Squee, this book 🥰

Gobbled this up yesterday. It's not as romance focused as I think other Cat Sebastian readers might be expecting, but the romance is sweet. There are a couple of non-sexual intimate moments that were really nicely done.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. All of its elements are things I love: Post-War Britain, Quirky Country Villages, Romance, Spies(!!)... But it just never coalesced into the story I was looking for. It was sweet but disjointed and I found myself frustrated in trying to follow the actual murder mystery.

1. No. I might consider a book because of a nice cover, but a bad one won't put me off
2. As an e-book
3. For Australian Littens: Shaun Micallef.
For everyone else: The Age (Melbourne paper), the ABC & SBS (Aus. public broadcasters), The Guardian (UK & Aus.), the New Daily (Aus. union supported news site), the BBC, my state & federal MPs (both Labor women)
4. Snooze, always.

This was a refreshingly sweet story. Or at least as sweet as murder and spy craft can be! Very much in the vein of Agatha Christie, but sweeter, and with more romance. I absolutely loved this little nugget of a story! And I am waiting with baited breath for the next installment of Page & Sommers!
