Opioid, Indiana
Opioid, Indiana | Brian Allen Carr
12 posts | 14 read | 11 to read
During a week-long suspension from school, a teenage transplant to impoverished rural Indiana searches for a job, the whereabouts of his vanished drug-addicted guardian, and meaning in the America of the Trump years. Seventeen-year-old Riggle is living in rural Indiana with his uncle and uncle's girlfriend after the death of both of his parents. Now his uncle has gone missing, probably on a drug binge. It's Monday, and $800 in rent is due Friday. Riggle, who's been suspended from school, has to either find his uncle or get the money together himself. His mission exposes him to a motley group of Opioid locals--encounters by turns perplexing, harrowing, and heartening. Meanwhile, Riggle marks each day by remembering the mythology his late mother invented for him about how the days got their names. With amazing directness and insight, Carr explores what it's like to be a high school kid in in the age of Trump, a time of economic inequality, addiction, confederate flags, and mass shootings. A work of empathy and insight, Opioid, Indiana pierces to the heart of our moment through an unforgettable protagonist.

My #booktrade book has arrived, @Soubhiville ! Thanks so much for the trade, Soubhi. I look forward to reading this one. I know it doesn‘t have great reviews, but I still want to try it.

wanderinglynn Ooh, I love that little bookstore! 😍 4y
Soubhiville Wow it got there fast! I hope you‘ll enjoy it. 😊📚 4y
TheNookOfKnowledge Random question: is this mini book store handmade or did you purchase it? Love it! ❤️🏡 3y
Hooked_on_books @TheNookOfKnowledge Kinda both. I made it from a kit. I love it, too! 3y

Meh. This was ok.
Riggle is 17, his dad died several years ago in an accident driving his rig, and his mom never recovered from her depression. So now he lives with his uncle who is addicted to many substances in a small town he calls Opioid Indiana. But his uncle goes missing, they‘re about to get evicted, and the poor kid can‘t catch a break.

Interesting, a quick read, but I can‘t say I‘d recommend it.

This was my #doublespin.

TheAromaofBooks Sounds like a bit of a downer... 4y
Soubhiville @TheAromaofBooks yeah... definitely not a happy book. I was just looking at my bingo board and this is actually my doublespin, i started my Bookspin this morning 😊. I‘m going to edit my original post, but didn‘t know if it matters for your list. 4y

TheAromaofBooks No, it doesn't matter to me - I just have a space for two checks next to everyone's names, & once they are both filled, you can't get any more checks for the month haha 4y
Soubhiville @TheAromaofBooks that‘s a good system! Keep it simple. 😊 4y
Megabooks Great review! I didn‘t care for this one. 4y

Having grown up in Indiana, I was curious about this book. It does a good job with the atmospherics of a small town south of Indianapolis. Riggle is well written and reminds me a bit of Holden Caulfield. Overall, it was a fun read.

I picked this up on my trip to Book People with @Mitch . Now I‘m wondering if I should have checked Litsy reviews before buying it- they‘re not so good. It sounded good to me from the blurb though, so I‘m looking forward to it anyway. 🤷‍♀️

AmyG Only one way to find out. 😳 5y
Teresereading Interested to see what you think 5y
Hooked_on_books I hate when that happens! Hopefully it works out. 5y
Mitch Oh no! Might still work..... if not - it‘s still a great cover! 5y
Jee_HookedOnBookz I agree with @Mitch! Love the cover! ❤️ 5y

I liked the main character‘s story, but the bits about how the days of the week got their names just ruined it for me. They‘re done in an annoying accent on the audiobook. Not sure I would have liked it better in print.

Megabooks That was so weird! The days of the week thing. I was like WhereTF did that come from?!? 5y

Listening to an advanced libro.fm copy based on @Megabooks ‘s review. So far it throws Indiana around a lot but doesn‘t feel like it fully illustrates rural Indiana beyond cliche (despite the comparing every winter to the blizzard of ‘78). Also it talks about getting snow days when a lot of Indiana schools now utilize e-learning days for weather.

Megabooks And having lived in Southern Indiana in this decade and growing up in northwestern Kentucky, there is not nearly as much snow now as in the 80s in general. 🤷🏻‍♀️ #climatechange 5y
mdemanatee @Megabooks yeah I am going to agree with you on this one. What a disappointment. 5y
Megabooks @mdemanatee I feel like there is a book on the deindustrialization and subsequent poverty and opioid addiction of the working class in the Midwest, but this wasn‘t it. I felt like the book I‘m tagging was a mess too, but some people liked it. It was sort of going for a similar goal. 5y
Megabooks Honestly, the best book I‘ve read tying these things together is the nonfiction I just read for the third time. 5y

I wouldn‘t say it‘s the worst book I‘ve ever finished, but it‘s pretty damn close. If listening to a 17 year-old boy‘s stream-of-consciousness thoughts about post-Trump rural Indiana is your wheelhouse, then try it, but even for trying to do that well, I wasn‘t impressed. Just a bunch of random nonsense!

Ruthiella What made you pick it up? 5y
Leftcoastzen Oh dear. 5y
Megabooks @Ruthiella Because I have lived in Indiana, in a small city on the bad side of town, and I thought there might be something relatable, profound or at least interesting, but there wasn‘t. 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 5y

Megabooks @Leftcoastzen Yeah. I didn‘t enjoy it. 5y
ravenlee Ugh, that sounds awful. Who thought that would be a good idea? 5y
Megabooks @ravenlee There are a number of authors that are trying to explain (or IMO mansplain) the Trump victory, resurgent white supremacy, and the opioid crisis in the Midwest in a novel. I haven‘t found any I‘ve tried satisfying. 5y
Amandajoy They raved about this on All the Books this week. I was iffy on it based on the description. Think I‘ll pass. 5y
KT1432 Eek! Probably not for me either lol 5y
Megabooks @Amandajoy @lele1432 the author did a really good job of making it the ramblings of a 17 year old, and I just felt it went nowhere, but not in a profound way. It was a 4 hour audiobook and after 3 I would‘ve bailed if it were longer. 5y
mdemanatee 😬 I wanted this to be good. As a rural Indiana native, does it give a sense of what part of Indiana it takes place in? 5y
Megabooks @mdemanatee it‘s one of the more rural/broken down suburban areas around Indy because they talk about area code 317. I read it because I used to live in a bad part near Evansville and thought I‘d find parts relatable, but I didn‘t. Of anyone on Litsy, I‘d encourage you to read it. Maybe I‘m wrong. 🤷🏻‍♀️ my ego isn‘t quite large enough to believe I can‘t be. 🤣😉 5y
mdemanatee @Megabooks I grew up between Lafayette and the Region but I will give this a try. I shall report back eventually. 5y
Megabooks @mdemanatee I‘m really interested in reading your opinion when you read it. Please tag me if you remember, even if we disagree. Thanks, and I hope you do enjoy it!! 5y

Opioid, Indiana is the story of Riggle an orphaned teenager who lives with his uncle in an unnamed city in Indiana. The story takes place in the span of one week, when Riggle gets suspended from school for a week for something he did not do. But hey, he is a teenager so he really does not care about missing school.
