This was a totally feel-good read about two young people deeply in love in the 1970s, but torn apart from one another. Decades later they reconnect by sending each other songs and lyrics on Twitter, one of them in Scotland, the other in #Australia.
Nothing deep, just all the feelings and nostalgia! Loved it!

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

These are my #currentreads and last ones in May. The Court of Miracles is from Illumicrate and the naked cover is stunning! Both books are really good!

Ali and Dan were a couple and very much in love until she mysteriously disappeared from his life. About 30 years later, almost accidentally, they connect on social media. While they begin communicating by sending not messages but songs to each other, they also start to question some of their life choices and to entertain the idea of "what if". ⬇️

eeclayton I checked out the songs after reading, and the characters stayed with me longer, like the reading experience was extended. I also discovered some tunes I'll definitely return to.
But most importantly, I enjoyed the story unfolding quite slowly, I felt for the characters, and I admired the beautiful writing.

This was lovely. I didn‘t know many of the songs that kept Alison and Daniel connected but I understood the power of music to connect you and bring you straight back to a moment and a feeling. The moment when Alison met Mr Lawrence again actually brought a tear to my eye, it was lovely! A sweet heartwarming read.

🎶 This was a mash up of my very favourite things - music, Yorkshire, Australia - that had me in my feels and back in my youth. A top of the pops feel-good. I loved it 🎶

LeeRHarry This certainly sounds right up my alley!! 😊 4y
JennyM I really enjoyed it. Really took me back. My mother in law is from Sheffield and I‘ve pretty much demanded she read it 🤣 It‘s set there and in South Australia ❤️ (edited) 4y
CarolynM I loved the characters and the setting (and the music, of course) but I wanted it to have a bit more depth, a bit more than romance. 4y
JennyM @CarolynM I know what you mean. I felt that some of the storylines could have been better fleshed out. As a Yorkshire lass though...I loved the dialect and particularly the scenes with Dan‘s Dad. Flat caps and pigeons are very much a thing! (edited) 4y

I'm a little late with this one, I'm having a busy week. Thanks for the tag @EadieB 😊

1. I keep it, but I don't buy many print books nowadays. I rely heavily on my fantastic local library, and I buy lots of ebooks.

2. Mix Tape by Jane Sanderson is calling my name 😀

Would you like to play @MySharonaK @vanslibanan ?

“It was the music that took you places, melted your hearts and all that”
This is an ode to music, first love, the one that got away, the fantasy of what if and the power to be true to yourself. I adored this book; brought me back to those angst filled days of mixed tapes, daydreams and smoke filled clubs. Parts of the book were a little too convenient but I decided too let go and enjoy the fantasy. An updated Eleanor & Park.

Cinfhen Definitely for YOU @KarenUK 4y

CarolynM I'm very glad, although a little surprised, that you liked it. I kind of wished it had a less "romance" story arc but I loved the setting and the music is very much my thing @TrishB 4y
Cinfhen It was a tad sappy but it‘s all part of that first love so I just went with it. I‘m sure you loved the setting of Adelaide 😊 @CarolynM 4y

I have to say that I didn‘t really enjoy this book. From the synopsis it seemed as though it was just the type of book I‘d like to read. I found it quite slow, with lots of references to some obscure songs I hadn‘t heard of from the 70‘s & 80‘s. I looked up most of them to see if they were song I knew, but didn‘t recognise the artists or titles.

My rating: 3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5. Full review: https://gadgetgirl71.blog/2020/01/22/mix-tape/

I was a little bit disappointed that this book turned out to have a fairly standard romance trajectory but only because the characters and setting of the story were so strong and unusual. There aren't many stories even partly set in Adelaide, where I grew up, and I really enjoyed the way the author described it, even if it had me rolling my eyes occasionally. Added to that, the area I grew up in was mostly populated by immigrants from England's 👇

CarolynM 🖕industrial north, so I felt very at home with the Sheffield parts of the story too. And just to top it off, I am the same age as these characters, and a bit of a music snob who grew up with all the same musical influences, largely because of the people around me (my husband likes to say I grew up in a pommy subculture - apologies English friends). Anyway, bottom line, I ended up absolutely loving this. (edited) 5y

BarbaraBB I am doing better. Getting a bit used to this new reality I think. How about you? And your parents? 😘 5y
CarolynM @BarbaraBB That's good🙂 We are ok, I'm trying hard not to look to far forward, just live in the now. My parents are fine at the moment, I spoke to them this morning (it's my father's 80th birthday, we were supposed to be there). Thanks for asking. Hope your family are all doing well.😘 5y

CarolynM @Cathythoughts Thanks Cathy😘 5y
Centique I love the sound of this 😍 5y
RaimeyGallant I think I read the first half of this and kept meaning to finish it. Good reminder for me, but it will still probably be a while until I get around to it. I'm doing well and thanks for checking in. I went into isolation early (immunocompromised). Feeling better, getting back into audiobooks and walking since no gym. How are you? Where are you? I'm in Winnipeg, a city in of itself that's relatively isolated, which is in our favor with covid. 5y
CarolynM @RaimeyGallant The first half was the best part in my view so maybe don't be in too much of a hurry to get back to it🙂 Glad to hear you're ok and taking extra care. I'm doing fine with the stay at home thing provided I don't think too much about how long I'm going to have to do it and I can still gat my daily coffee. I'm in Melbourne, we don't have a huge number of cases so far, the next couple of weeks will be telling. Stay well and in touch😘 5y

On the surface this seems like a light and fluffy story, but it is so much more. Dealing with the complexities of family, navigating our way in adulthood and grown up relationships, it also begs the question of how much would you risk, and lose, for a chance at perfect happiness? For Ali and Daniel, who shared a deep connection in their youth, rediscovering each other during adulthood refreshes their love for music... And each other....
