Trent's Last Case
Trent's Last Case | E. C. Bentley
21 posts | 17 read | 17 to read
Get to know debonair sleuth Philip Trent in the first novel in which the beloved detective ever made an appearance. In Trent's Last Case, author E.C. Bentley pulls off a remarkable feat -- a detective novel that is a sophisticated and hilarious send-up of the detective fiction genre! A must-read for die-hard fans of detective stories, or for anyone craving an entertaining whodunit.

It‘s an entertaining book written in 1939 by an Englishman. Some of the points of view are interesting in retrospect.

It‘s one thing to read historical fiction by a contemporary author, but it‘s quite another thing to read fiction written in another era. If the language and morés of the past fade to the background, you‘re probably reading a classic. This book is not that, even though both Agatha Christie & Dorothy Sayers gave it high praise. That those writers liked it is the reason that I always wanted to read it, and this ⬇️

gradcat ⬆️ (cont) prompt gave me the impetus for getting after it. While the story is good enough, the plot is extremely convoluted and the language very stilted. I had trouble keeping up with the goings-on in this mystery novel, mostly because of the myriad doings of the murdered businessman in his financial and marital affairs. I won‘t pan the book—it‘s too well written for that—but I will put it at the very lowest end of the so-so category. ♥️ (edited) 4y
Cinfhen That was the nicest negative review I ever read 😘 4y

This was a good little companion for a day waiting to see the doctor. Now that it‘s done I‘m stuck between about five things to read next — eep!

After last week's lovely reads, I am back in a reading slump.

Trent's last case is an ok detective mystery, but it is more of historical interest, spanning Victorian suspense with modern detective mysteries.

After loving Slade House, I ended up bailing on Bone Clocks by David Mitchell as I just couldn't face the meandering plot.

An American capitalist is found dead in the garden of his English country house, 2 immediate matters confound detective Philip Trent: why is the dead man not wearing his false teeth and why is his young widow seemingly relieved at his death? The newly widowed Mabel Manderson, ‘The Lady in Black‘, has a disarming effect on the imaginative Trent, in this classic detective story that twists and turns.

Andrew65 Another author I‘ve not heard of. 5y

This one was a little slow starting for me but it picked up a bit as it went along. The ending was worth the work of getting through it.

@ReadingEnvy This is headed your way. It should arrive Saturday. #Whodunitbymail

When you have two work computers at home and can‘t get either of them to work right, you take a #snowday and finish your #whodunitbymail book.

I prefer coffee #inmymug but I like tea too. I prefer procedural mysteries but a high-stakes thriller from time to time is an interesting change of pace.

This will be on the way to you @AndreaReads in the next few days.

The important thing to know about an assassination or an attempted assassination is not who fired the shot, but who paid for the bullet.

Cinfhen Interesting!!! 6y
BookishMe I tried reading this but it became too rambling as the amateur Detective continued with his quest. I gave it up after 3rd chapter or so 6y

English writer of cozy mysteries gets entangled in sordid reality of actual organised crime on the continent.

This one surprised me! Usually I find spy novels dry as dust, but not this time. Published in 1939, just prior to war breaking out & with Europe in turmoil, this book is politically insightful & clear-eyed about how non-glamorous crime really is.

Plus, movie with Peter Lorre! As the (mostly) good guy!
