Three Souls | Janie Chang

An absorbing novel of romance and revolution, loyalty and family, sacrifice and undying loveWe have three souls, or so I'd been told. But only in death could I confirm this....So begins the haunting and captivating tale, set in 1935 China, of the ghost of a young woman named Leiyin, who watches her own funeral from above and wonders why she is being denied entry to the afterlife. Beside her are three souls stern and scholarly yang; impulsive, romantic yin; and wise, shining hun who will guide her toward understanding. She must, they tell her, make amends. As Leiyin delves back in time with the three souls to review her life, she sees the spoiled and privileged teenager she once was, a girl who is concerned with her own desires while China is fractured by civil war and social upheaval. At a party, she meets Hanchin, a captivating left-wing poet and translator, and instantly falls in love with him. When Leiyin defies her father to pursue Hanchin, she learns the harsh truth that she is powerless over her fate. Her punishment for disobedience leads to exile, an unwanted marriage, a pregnancy, and, ultimately, her death. And when she discovers what she must do to be released from limbo into the afterlife, Leiyin realizes that the time for making amends is shorter than she thought.Suffused with history and literature, Three Souls is an epic tale of revenge and betrayal, forbidden love, and the price we are willing to pay for freedom."

The spiritual & historical fiction premise of this book is totally my style. I liked the story, from the perspective of a young Chinese girl and her 3 souls. Even if the 2nd part has its lengths, once in the 3rd, I could not put it down! Beautiful story of atonement, against a background of Chinese culture and politics.

@Lesanne @Kaylamburson @sprainedbrain #LMPBC #FTroop @suvata Here are some options for our group. Let me know what you think. 🌹

Lesanne I‘ve read The Library at Mount Char (great!) and never read any Green Gables books so I don‘t know how much I would get out of that one. First choice: All the Ever Afters, but they all look good! 5y
sprainedbrain Such great choices! I‘ve read both The Library at Mount Char and Three Souls (and they are both very good for very different reasons!), but I would honestly be happy with any of the others! ❤️ 5y
Kaylamburson Great list! I've had Mudbound on my TBR and think it would be a great one for the book club, but would be happy with the Cinderella one or The Removes!! 5y
Wife Thanks @Lesanne @sprainedbrain @Kaylamburson I have narrowed it down with your help, I haven‘t decided yet. It‘s between Mudbound and Cinderella 🌹 5y
Kaylamburson Yay!! Can't wait to find out which you decide! All great choices. 5y
Lesanne @Wife Excellent choices!! Can‘t wait to read whichever one you choose. 😌 5y
Wife @Kaylamburson @sprainedbrain @Lesanne I‘m going to go with All the Everafters. I‘m excited that our group TBR is coming together!🌹 5y
Lesanne Yay, I‘m looking forward to reading it!! 5y
Kaylamburson Looking forward to it!! So interesting to see our generic "fiction" category lean towards historical fiction and myths/fairy-tales! 5y
Wife @Kaylamburson You‘re right🤔 5y

March #BookSpin. @TheAromaofBooks Leiyin is dead she will make a reflection of her life and will try to amend her errors with her 3 souls besides her in order to continue to the afterlife path. Full of history (1928-1935), Chinese folklore, generational changes in old traditions with some author's real family story. A very slow reading but beautifully written. It reminded me Ghost Bride since Leiyin is avoiding to become a hunger ghost. 4⭐️

Gissy #BookSpin was a great idea to give me the opportunity to read this book that has been in my tbr for a long time. 5y
Alora Awe I love this. So cozy 5y
TheAromaofBooks Great review! I have been looking for some books that focus more on Asian culture, so I will have to check this one out! 5y

Gissy Thank you @TheAromaofBooks If you like slow reading and enjoy Chinese folklore, you may like this one. There is drama, family betrayal, ghosts. I confess that sometimes I was upset with some characters on how they used to treat women but it was part of the culture as it is explain in the novel. This novel was in my tbr I think for almost 2 years! I'm happy I read it. Thank you for that #BookSpin challenge 🤗 5y
tpixie @Gissy great review! I just finished it!! 2y

My Swiss army recommendations for #24in48 - so hard to pick just one or two but these are some of the first books I‘d recommend if someone was looking for something to pick up. Hopefully something in the stack would be the right one!

This book was so engaging that I had to do the book/audio combination because I just had to know what happened next. 😃

At the beginning of the book, we know our main character Leiyin has died, and we spend the rest of the novel watching her and her three souls review her life and death in revolution-era China and try to make amends for actions so that she can pass on. Sounds good, right? It is, and it‘s beautifully written.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Good morning, y‘all. 😃

Best #firstline from my #24in48 stack is from the tagged book.

I have to go do some silly grown up things like getting new tires and groceries, so I‘m switching to audio for a while. 😃

mom2bugnbee That's a good one! 6y
janeycanuck I love this book - I saw the author a few months ago and she said it‘s partially based on her grandmother‘s life. 6y

My second book by this author (who also wrote Dragon Springs Road) and I loved it just as much! The MC is a ghost who can‘t move on to the afterlife and reincarnation until she rights the wrongs she made while alive. Set during the civil war before communist China, this novel depicts a society pulled in multiple directions, between the past and competing versions of the future, through the lens of the everyday business of domestic life and family.

#TuneIntoNovember First, how gorgeous is this cover?!?! I‘ve posted this before, but it‘s such a beautiful story 💚 Song Leiyin is observing her own funeral and has no memory of her previous life. She can not enter the afterlife without first atoning for her past wrongdoings. Her three souls—yin, yang, and hun—help her begin to recover her memories so she can #AwakeMySoul and earn reincarnation. Set in 1920's China 🇨🇳

Cinfhen I think you would love this @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks 7y

I feel like this book isn't incredibly well known. I saw it on a FB post where someone asked for book recommendations and this was one of the comments. It took a while to get into but after a few chapters I was hooked. The characters, the settings and the insight into the world of 1935 China were gripping. Would definitely recommend! Truly beautiful!
