Winner of the 2013 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for Poetry ""The Collected Poems of Lucille Clifton 1965-2010" may be the most important book of poetry to appear in years."--"Publishers Weekly""All poetry readers will want to own this book; almost everything is in it."--"Publishers Weekly""If you only read one poetry book in 2012, "The Collected Poems of Lucille Clifton" ought to be it."--NPR"The 'Collected Clifton' is a gift, not just for her fans...but for all of us."--"The Washington Post""The love readers feel for Lucille Clifton--both the woman and her poetry--is constant and deeply felt. The lines that surface most frequently in praise of her work and her person are moving declarations of racial pride, courage, steadfastness."--Toni Morrison, from the Foreword"The Collected Poems of Lucille Clifton 1965-2010" combines all eleven of Lucille Clifton's published collections with more than fifty previously unpublished poems. The unpublished poems feature early poems from 1965-1969, a collection-in-progress titled "the book of days" (2008), and a poignant selection of final poems. An insightful foreword by Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison and comprehensive afterword by noted poet Kevin Young frames Clifton's lifetime body of work, providing the definitive statement about this major America poet's career. On February 13, 2010, the poetry world lost one of its most distinguished members with the passing of Lucille Clifton. In the last year of her life, she was named the first African American woman to receive the $100,000 Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize honoring a US poet whose "lifetime accomplishments warrant extraordinary recognition," and was posthumously awarded the Robert Frost Medal for lifetime achievement from the Poetry Society of America."mother-tongue: to man-kind" (from the unpublished "the book of days"): "all that I am asking isthat you see me as somethingmore than a common occurrence, more than a woman in her ordinary skin."

Littens! Unknown content creator for this mini, off-beat poem. Anyone know who credit belongs to?

EDIT: This was authored by Lucille Clifton. Huge thanks to @TheBookHippie for helping find this!!! 🎉❤️💃🏻

It‘s still potent.

I‘ve been reading this collection all month, a section each day, and I love that I got to read the entire collection as one and see all the themes that ran through her life. Clifton‘s style is direct, which makes it easy to connect to on an emotional level, and can also make it gut wrenching depending on the subject, like her poems on sexual abuse by her father that just cut to the quick. #Nonfiction2022 #ImASurvivor @Riveted_Reader_Melissa

Thanks for the tag @TheRiehlDeal
Thanks for the giveaway @TheSpineView

☕️ I honestly and truly wish that I could say that I part with books after reading...that I have tons of bookshelf space because books aren‘t allowed to take up permanent residence. But stay they do and they get cozy with one another and multiply.

☕️ My most wished for book for the longest time is the tagged poetry collection.

Tag: @timeisfleeting

MallenNC The same thing happens with my books! They move in and get comfortable. 4y
TheSpineView Books do lend to multiple.. like rabbits!😂 Thanks for playing and good luck! 🤞BTW, love that your most most wished for book is poetry! 4y
Reggie I like that they get cozy with each other. It makes me feel like they‘re less alone. 4y
timeisfleeting Thanks for the tag @Nute. Sometimes I keep it, sometimes pass it on.

Oh my, I have lots on my tbr-- I cannot narrow it down to one. : /

Took a long time to get through, because I kept stopping to write down poems, and because I couldn't stop myself halfway through from returning to the beginning and reading it all again. Her series of religious poetry, reimagining biblical figures, were gorgeous, even though I'm not religious. Her poems about cancer were amazing - esp “leukemia as white rabbit“. I read this as an ebook but will definitely be buying a paper copy to love to pieces.

Went canoeing with my husband and brought some poetry. Blessing the Boats was the first poem and it was lovely and meant to be. 😊

WCW...Lucille Clifton. Her poetry fills and props me up like a shot of whiskey. The very top edge got cut off but it's all good.

Leelee08 I did a paper on her this past spring. I fell head over heels.😍 8y
