I decorated my office/library with New Yorker magazine cover art when we were home during covid 2020. I needed the nourishment of books surrounding me as I stumbled along learning to teach in a radically new way: online.

Because I love to read books, I often leave my New Yorker's sitting in a pile. I have a serious backlog & can't throw them out. I made a commitment to read at least 2 of them before reaching for a new book. Each time I pick up the magazine I am struck by how much I love the content. I learn so much about subjects I had no idea I could be interested in. Just a heartfelt appreciation that they continue to put in the time to provide amazing content.

paulfrankspencer Inability to keep up is what caused me to unsubscribe twice. 2y
Lola I could have written this post 😂 Yes, this is me. And @paulfrankspencer I too have unsubscribed- and then a special officer comes and I‘m pulled right back in 🤷🏻‍♀️🙃 2y
Suet624 @paulfrankspencer @lola I commit to read two articles. I skim the other articles to see how deep I want to go. I have to be a bit ruthless about not bothering with certain things (like articles about architecture and the theatre). I rarely read the short stories. I have unsubscribed but always return. I feel an inordinate amount of responsibility to committing to them. 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 2y

Lola That‘s a good strategy. My problem is that I tend to treat them like novellas and attempt to read from cover to cover. Then I get overwhelmed and out it back on the stack and the pile grows and grows 😬🙄 2y
Leftcoastzen I feel seen.😀Not currently subscribed but feel it coming on ! Great cover! 2y
Suet624 @Lola I know exactly what you mean. I used to read it the same way, as a novella and then adding it back to the pile because I hadn't read the very last piece. Grrrr... It's not supposed to be a job so I'm kind but firm with myself. Enjoy some and leave the rest and be just a little bit ruthless about it. Granted, this is a new-ish strategy but it's working for me so far. 🌹 2y
Suet624 @Leftcoastzen Do it! 😂 2y
kspenmoll I have a smaller pile because I try to get each moth done by its end. Bathroom reading too!!!I admit I do not read everything, but choose articles/stories of interest, poems & of course, cartoons. 2y
LeahBergen Happy Birthday, my friend! I hope you have a wonderful day! ❤️📚❤️📚 2y
Suet624 @LeahBergen thank you so much, Leah! It‘s a beautiful day here today and that alone is a wonderful thing. 💕😂 2y
Suet624 @kspenmoll my hero, keeping that pile low and moving them out of the house. 2y
BarbaraBB Wishing you a very happy birthday, my special friend ❤️😘 2y
batsy Happy birthday, Sue! Hope you can have a good one, though I know it's not been the best day over there in the States ❤️ 2y
Suet624 @BarbaraBB @batsy Thank you so much. Yesterday was both a wonderful day (folks contacting me and wishing me well) and a truly horrible day with the Supreme Court taking away the rights of over half of the US population to have control of their own body. However, they have allowed everyone to own a gun and kill people. It's unimaginable. The Republican Party has lied and cheated their way into taking away so many of our rights. I'm gutted. 2y
BarbaraBB I totally understand, I have no clue why guns are still supported (dont‘t they ever compare themselves to countries without guns and the amount of killings there?) and the abortus law is beyond me. So sad. 2y
Suet624 @BarbaraBB Money and power and control. This is just the tip of the iceberg. 2y
BarbaraBB That‘s true. Money rules the country. All in the name of democracy 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
BarbaraBB But I know too little, I don‘t live there and just read the news. To us even de Democrats are very right-winged. 2y
Suet624 @BarbaraBB Yes, they've definitely moved more to the right. I think it's to try to get moderate Republicans to join them. I think you have a better sense of what's happening over here than a lot of my fellow Americans do. 2y
nathandrake1997 Hey Sue.....I miss you 🥺❤️ 2y

I can't recommend Drop Dead Gorgeous in good conscience; but I will say that as a teen, I was obsessed with every hilarious, offensive, inappropriate, and grisly moment of this movie (which was #AmyAdams film debut). However, I can recommend Jia Tolentino's article, which perfectly captures DDG's resonance:

Klou Great job!! I haven't seen this one, though I have heard of it. 3y

Happy Saturday dear littens. I‘ve got four or five New Yorker magazines sprawled across the bed, trying to decide which one to start with 🤔 I've fallen a little behind the last few weeks.
What are you reading on this chilly Saturday night?

Also, has anyone heard about any upcoming Christmas swaps? They are truly the best and I'm so looking forward to it! Keeping my fingers crossed 🤞🎄🎁❄️🎅

Leftcoastzen I need to get to a magazine stack too! 4y
Hazel2019 So what‘s the New Yorker magazine all about? I‘ve heard about. It plenty of times but never really read it. 4y
Gaylagal2 @Hazel2019 The New Yorker is pretty much ALL articles and no fluff. It's really great reading about everything: current events, politics, fiction, stories about important /famous people, investigations and you name it! I'll send you some of my New Yorkers and you can see what you think 😉😁 4y
Hazel2019 @Gaylagal2 sounds like a great magazine for readers...thank you ☺️ 4y

I‘m reading a recent article in the New Yorker about Marilynne Robinson and came across this quote from one her school teachers. It really spoke to me.

“one must make one‘s mind a good companion, because you live with it every minute of your life”

emz711 Have you read his autobiography? 4y
Saknicole @emz711 no! But it‘s on my list now! 4y
emz711 @Saknicole it was really interesting and fun. Eric Idle's is good too, I read on audiobook and he was funny if course 4y

Do journal much? Well I thought with all this going on, now would be a perfect time to start again. Years ago while still living in Reno & Vegas, I journaled and blogged everyday...loved it. Met some super people from all over.
So let me if you journal and what kind of things you write about. 😁Sound good?
#KeepLitsyPositive 🤙

PaperbackPirate Thanks for sharing! I am better at buying journals than filling them in but this week I worked on 2 - my book journal and a travel journal. 5y

Of course, right now the world is so distracting it feels like it‘s taking three months to read every book even if it‘s really only a day or two...

"You must always respect the sea, it's bigger than you."

I have never read Anne Enright, but listened to this short story today on 'The Writer's Voice' podcast by The New Yorker. Loved it, and now i am itching to pick up her work. Also, her voice is just perfect!

It's freely available on the application Stitcher if anyone is interested.

bcncookbookclub I loved this quote and 😋 5y
sudi Hey, just dropped by to tell you i did checkout the podcast and really liked it too, so thanks for the recommendation. I tried to DM you on insta but couldn't find you. 5y
Tanisha_A @sudi Hi Sudi! You're welcome. ❤️ Yeah, i uninstalled Instagram, was spending too much time on phone. I'll WhatsApp you my number via email, we can chat there. 😁 5y
sudi @Tanisha_A no problem 😊, i did the same thing but then i ended it opening it on my browser, the point is i have no self control 😫 5y
Tanisha_A @sudi Ahahaha! Totally understandable. In my case, laziness is being helpful - too much effort to open it in the browser. 😅 5y
