I liked this one better than the first book, which rarely happens to me for a second book. Off to borrow the third book in the series.

Reading this one for the Read a book you were really excited for, but never picked up!

Emily Suvada is the real deal. This second book in the Mortal Coil series is superb, continuing to nuance the relationships between characters and add layers of plot without bogging down the story. If you like dystopian fiction, I highly recommend this. If you shy away from YA, do NOT shy away from this book! It is so well done (but start with book one). I cannot wait for the next book!

After a hectic period in my life I finally got back to reading and this was a hell of a read.

I LOVED the first one and this one was better. The ending evoked so much emotion I wanted to throw the book while simultaneously willing the next one into existence immediately.

Sequels never live up to their predecessor. This Cruel Design was good but a tad confusing. I still love the characters and world building. The concept is original, and Suvada was able to build the world so tightly. The twist at the end was a shocker. I wonder what will happen in book three. I highly recommend this series. It's easy to get lost in.

This is a strong sequel to This Mortal Coil. Cat and her friends are trying to stop the mutated virus, and Cat learns more about herself and more about her past. There‘s so much DNA science in this book- it is well-researched and quite detailed for YA dystopian fiction! Lots of action and adventure!

There‘s such a strength to Emily Suvada‘s writing. She gets so much perfect that she‘s very much Jun Bei, but writing fiction instead of genetic code. The way she takes a moment in this chapter to reorient the reader with what‘s happening for each of these characters and what‘s at stake is impressive. #SoCruel #EmilySuvada #ThisCruelDesign #YA #scifi #youngadult

What the what did I just read?!? Wow. Not much of a sophomore slump here. The twists and turns and “what just happened” moments continue just as they did in This Mortal Coil. Catarina is on the run & there are new friends, new enemies, & secrets both told & not told that will change everything. I don‘t want to spoil it so I‘ll just say that if you enjoyed This Mortal Coil you will definitely enjoy this one too. A great, nonstop thrill ride!

I‘d be lying if I didn‘t admit that the amazing cover to This Mortal Coil is what first got me interested in that book (and damn, did I ever end up loving that book!). This has left me extremely curious how the cover designer was ever going to do anything near as good for the sequel and recapture the style of the first book.
