Ren Daiyan was still just a boy when he took the lives of seven men while guarding an imperial magistrate. That moment on a lonely road changed his life in entirely unexpected ways, sending him into the forests of Kitai among the outlaws. From there he emerges years laterand his life changes again, dramatically, as he circles toward the court and emperor, while war approaches Kitai from the north. Lin Shan is the daughter of a scholar, his beloved only child. Educated by him in ways young women never are, gifted as a songwriter and calligrapher, she finds herself living a life suspended between two worlds. Her intelligence captivates an emperorand alienates women at the court. But when her fathers life is endangered by the savage politics of the day, Shan must act in ways no woman ever has. In an empire divided by bitter factions circling an exquisitely cultured emperor who loves his gardens and his art far more than the burdens of governing, dramatic events on the northern steppe alter the balance of power in the world, leading to events no one could have foretold, under the river of stars.

It‘s engaging historical fiction with a bit of fantasy thrown in. I recommend it because it‘s entertaining and gives food for thought.

Not quite a sequel to Under Heaven; the characters of the first book have passed into legend. The first book told the story of the beginning of the fall of the Tong Dynasty. This one tells the end of the fall of the Sung Dynasty. The first was more heroic, the second more elegiac. Ren Daiyan, an outlaw who rises to army general, and Lin Shan, the best poet of the generation when women don't write poetry, save what they can from history's river.

While visiting my family I stopped in to visit my favorite used bookstore that I used to go to all the time when I lived in the area! 📚💕 One of the reasons I love it so much is because it specializes in used fantasy and sci fi books! 😍 It was so awesome to talk to the owner, who remembered me by name even though I haven't been there in two years! 🤗I bought a nice copy of the tagged book while I was there! 💕📚

Leftcoastzen Wish I was there! Looks cool. 5y
Branwen @Leftcoastzen I wish you were too! I think you would love it! It's such a great little store! I would sometimes go in there after a bad day at work and he would give me one of the books in my pile that I was buying for free! 💕 5y

So I loved this but was also a little bored with it..? It was slow and lyrical and beautifully written which, depending on my mood, meant I was either completely absorbed or easily distracted. I loved, however, how the different narratives slowly weave together and I was flicking through the last few chapters desperate to know what happened. Overall, it's a pick but needs to be read in long sittings (and not with a toddler rampaging around!)

Here's my weekly check in for #BFCr2 ! I've finished one (skinny) book and I'm halfway through three others so I'm happy with the bookish part of the challenge. Not a great week fitness-wise with lots of family stuff and a new baby to coo over, but I still managed to go for an 8 mile hike and a run.

My favourite fitness thing is a toss up between the Couch to 5K app and Yoga with Adrienne videos. I'm in a house with five adults, two cats, and an almost-toddler so finding a quiet room for yoga is impossible at the moment! So running it is 😀

wanderinglynn Awesome! I‘ve heard lots of good things about yoga with Adrienne. I‘m going to have to check out her videos one of these days. 👍🏻 Thanks for sharing. 5y
mcipher Wow that sounds like a lot of company!! Glad you are able to find some peace somewhere. @wanderinglynn She‘s a great online teacher - very very positive and so sweet and down to earth. ❤️ 5y
Lucy_Anywhere @wanderinglynn Thanks! Adrienne has several 30 day yoga challenges which are a great way to get started. @mcipher it's a bit crazy, but I love it 💜 5y

A lazy day in the garden is the perfect place to read RIVER OF STARS. It's slow and beautifully written and can't be read in small snippets - I'm enjoying it so far!

Most of my fiction #shelves #30JuneBooks @howjessreads

I spent some time rearranging them yesterday... not that you can tell since they're just as full. But it was relaxing.

Curiouser_and_curiouser Ooooohhhh, I love your shelves!! I have mine facing me in my bedroom and I read their titles every day from bed, I have waited 17 years for this little piece of heaven.... 6y
llwheeler @Reading_to_escape that's lovely 😊. And thank you! These shelves are actually in my bedroom too, though due to the room shape and my bad eyesight, I can't read the titles from further away. It's very comforting to have them all in the room though ❤️ 6y

My brother is moving in with me so I cleared some space on my living room shelves!

(Same brother who fell and broke his face three weeks ago! He‘s doing much better and the move is unrelated to his injury.)

Got to work early today, so I‘m taking a few moments to myself. I‘m finishing up my first cup of coffee and sneaking more of this immersive book.

RealLifeReading I have this on my shelves and really ought to read it. I love his work! 7y

I got to see Guy Gavriel Kay at the Wild Writers Fest last September. He was an interesting speaker and he had a lot of cool stories about his research. I'm excited to dive into this one!

#booktober day 25: #ilikebigbooks

I tend to prefer reading e-books of big books so I was surprised to find that I did have a few on my shelves! Every so often I pull out the Art of Eating to read a few pages. And I'm very slowly making my way through the short story anthology. River of Stars is the only one I've not touched yet! Time to remedy that!

Leniverse I haven't heard of that one. I went through a Guy Gavriel Kay phase some 15 years ago. Read and loved The Fionawar Tapestry, The Lions of Al-Rassan, and A Song for Arbonne. Then I started Tigana, which I rage quit about a third or so through. The spell was broken and I moved on to other authors. Lol 8y
Reviewsbylola GWTW is my favorite book ever! 8y
GlitteryOtters I'm glad I'm not the only one who typically goes for e-books of the larger books! I have a few (all books I've owned for over a decade), but my circulation in my hands doesn't allow me to hold/carry giant books anymore. Thank goodness we live in the day & age of e-books! 8y

BethFishReads MFK Fisher. Sigh. My fav! 8y
lisakoby I love Guy Gavriel Kay. His book, Ysabel, is one of my favourites. I do e-books for the bigger ones too. 8y
read_diverse_books That's the biggest short story anthology I've ever seen! 😱 8y
