This is a 50 ⭐ read for me. I originally was listening to the audiobook from the library. About half way through, I realized that I LOVE this book, so I bought it. This was exactly what I needed. Since reading this a couple months ago, I may have become a Glennon/Abby/Amanda fan girl. It's fine. Everything is fine. This is my favorite read this year.

It is a good read and will spark ideas and conversations. It is not the end all be all for everyone. At times I was annoyed with the privilege POV.

5/5 - I started this book blindly, mostly because I needed something fast and it kept popping up on my library app. I had mixed feelings at first, but was soon won over. Doyle's ability to place complex ideas into layman's terms is strong. She expresses wisdom in so many areas, yet focuses on authenticity, self-love, parenting, social justice, and breaking societal barriers. Enlightening, thought-provoking, progressive.

So, I started this tonight and I'm not sure it's right for me. I think it would make a good primer for someone who is new to social constructionism and identity development. I feel that Doyle is trying too hard, however, to be a professor of wisdom? She is the one reading the audiobook and her voice took on a serious Brenee Brown tone when she said she was an expert on shame. I don't know. I am 20% in so I'll listen more before deciding 😬

I‘m not sure. There are definitely nuggets that will stay with me. However, as a book, I didn‘t find it flowed and I‘m honestly not sure what the overarching message was. But Glennon is an excellent narrator and reads it really well.

A book so full of thoughtful nuggets that you have to stop highlighting and taking notes and just slap on a post-it note that reads: “NOTE TO SELF: Read again for parenting advice… or love guidance ….or advocacy work……or when you‘re about to get on stage….or when you don‘t want to open the front door…or when you‘ve found your person…just read it again.”

Book #54: 🎧 Audiobook. Glennon is very honest and open, her viewpoints are relatable. I thought this book opened very strongly. I loved hearing about Glennon and Abby‘s love story and how they‘ve made their family work. I liked the chapters that were told like short stories best. Also, since this was an audiobook read by the author, I have to say that she has such a cute voice.

Finished this audiobook watching my kid play soccer in a downpour. I liked bits, completely couldn‘t relate to others, and ultimately loved the cover more than the contents. Glennon is a very good narrator, if a slightly too repetitive writer.

“It's like we really believe that our hearts were meant to be kept hidden away, bubble-wrapped, and under lockdown. As though the point of life is to not be moved. That's not the point. When we let ourselves be moved, we discover what moves us. Heartbreak is not something to be avoided; it's something to pursue. Heartbreak is one of the greatest clues of our lives“ (268).

NovelNancy Another quote I like: “Every philanthropist, if she is paying attention, eventually becomes an activist. If we do not, we risk becoming codependent with power -- saving the system's victims while the system collect the profits, then pats us on the head for our service. We become injustice's foot soldiers (255). 6mo

While I applaud Glennon for being brave and telling her story, this book just wasn't for me. I kept finding myself bored and skimming pages rather than reading.

I understand that this book is probably empowering to a lot of women, but for me personally, it didn't present anything new or interesting.

GettingOlder I‘m glad I‘m not the only one! I really like and admire Glennon, but I was very disappointed in this one. There has been so much hype about this book that I really felt I must have missed something….I didn‘t even finish it. Eek 6mo

I‘m embarrassed at how little I‘ve read during this pandemic. The things that I have read, though, are Brene Brown and this book which I think is telling. I just recently turned 40 and this book was given to me as a gift. While I couldn‘t relate to a lot of it as a straight, single woman without children, I could appreciate much of what she says about our culture and expectations as women. And I‘m glad I‘ve embraced my “Knowing” early on.

This is another right time, right book. Untamed really resonated with me and a lot of the shadow work I‘ve been doing to be the best possible version of myself - to love and appreciate myself, unapologetically. It‘s so good. I‘m a little worried about discussing it at book club, because of how vulnerable one has to be to discuss it, but it should be interesting. My only quibble is that some parts seem unnecessarily repetitive.

Rating: 3.5/5 Stars
I found this to be a bit dry and it bounced around a lot in the beginning and I was very confused. I really liked the commentary on BLM, LGBTQ, and taking meds for mental illness. I totally related to taking meds for mental illnesses and therapy. This was not a terrible memoir, but thought provoking and I liked that towards the end of the book. I can say I usually don‘t like memoirs and try to stay away from them. #botm

There have been so many good books out lately about mental health, both fiction and non-fiction, written by own voices authors. Have you read anything great recently? Or put something on your ever growing TBR?

Related: I'm trying to cut ableist language out of my vocabulary and it's really eye-opening to realize how often I use terms referencing mental illness when describing something negative. 😳

#IntegrateYourShelf

LauraBrook I‘ve been trying to do the same with my vocabulary lately and it‘s shocking! Even more shocking is that the alternatives aren‘t any better! Lots of food for thought, and I‘m glad to be making progress. 8mo

I didn‘t realize that this book was a self help memoir when I picked it up. While this is definitely not my favorite genre, there were many good pointers among the pages. Much of the content dealt with parenting. That ship has sailed a while ago for me, as I am currently a grandmother. While the authors views on many topics are very different than mine, I did find this book interesting and I learned a thing or two while reading it.

There are some good nuggets in this but overall I found her obnoxious. When I rated it 2 stars I went back and read some reviews on GR. There I found a five star review from Glennon herself. She gave herself a five star rating on goodreads, therefore proving my point.

Twainy Agree 💯 10mo
MicheleinPhilly I‘ve never read anything by her but there is just something about her that bugs the shit out of me. I had to unfollow Abby Wambach (whom I adore) on IG because I was so sick of seeing and reading about her wife. 🙄 10mo

I liked this book, it‘s a quick read and the stories are wonderfully written. She takes you along for the ride. She tells you the life lesson she learned from each story and touches on some important topics. She just scratches the surface, but a great introduction to different topics. She‘s honest about herself and life. It‘s about family, love, societal cages and how you can give permission to yourself to change how you interact with them

These are the people you can love.
Those are the people you should fear.
This is the kind of life you are supposed to want.”

We should be enjoying March Break right now but the powers that be have postponed it until April. So I‘m travelling by Starbucks mug this week. I enjoyed this book ( especially in audio) GD says the braver we are, the luckier we get and I think that‘s true

marleed Oh, I want to travel to NYC and purchase a mug like that! 10mo
mcctrish @marleed I hope you can 🙏🏻 10mo
KVanRead @marleed I love these mugs. A friend gave me the Ontario one and I liked it so much I ordered more of them on EBay, so if you can‘t travel yet, you could try that. I think the series is called ‘I‘ve been there‘ 10mo
See All 11 Comments
ValerieAndBooks I love these Starbucks mugs as well. They stack easily, too. Some my hubby have picked up from other countries don‘t “fit” though — different size. I kind of like the older designs more but won‘t refuse the newer ones. @KVanRead @marleed 10mo
marleed @ValerieAndBooks I‘m partial to the original designs, as well. But if I visit someplace I can‘t help but get a mug - whichever design. And it‘s some tiny thrill when a city, itself, justifies its own mug. ...My only pandemic travel had me accompany my daughter and her babies to Springfield MO with a quick drive over to Branson. I literally went to SB for a new mug- finally, but alas, no Branson :( 10mo
ValerieAndBooks @marleed yes it seems only the bigger cities get their own mugs. Sometimes we pick the mugs up from airport Starbucks 😊 . 10mo
mcctrish @ValerieAndBooks if I see the mug at the airport I grab it, once we didn‘t and my husband spent the whole trip trying to find it again 10mo
ValerieAndBooks @mcctrish I can relate 😂 ! Still think about the San Francisco one that got away but I do have a California one. 10mo
mcctrish @ValerieAndBooks once we were in Utah and the only place to get the mugs was the Starbucks in Safeway ( grocery store) some guyhad been in the week before and bought all of them ( 20+) and they hadn‘t received a new shipment yet ( one reason why I won‘t buy on eBay) 10mo
ValerieAndBooks @mcctrish ugh that‘s awful 😞 . So you still don‘t have an Utah mug? I did order one from eBay once to replace a mug that broke. But it was “previously used” which makes me feel better about it now. Less likely to have been from someone like the guy who bought out the Utah store. 10mo
mcctrish No, still no Utah mug 😢 @ValerieAndBooks we didn‘t fly into Utah on that trip ( we flew into Arizona and out of Colorado ) so the grocery store was our only hope. Sometime maybe we will go back that way 10mo

I appreciated her feminist message. I did think she didn't fully understand that something such as a debilitating illness or other outside stressor could keep a person from realizing their dreams. It sounds like she is on the path to self discovery and would like to lift other women up with her. It is also an inspiring love story about how she created a family with her wife. I am rooting for her.

3.5-4 stars; far from my usual genre, and some parts didn't speak to me, but I love the concept of the prologue, title, and thread that runs through the book.

"You are goddammed cheetah."

"Here's to untamed women--may we know them, may we raise them, may we read them, may we love them, may we elect them, may we marry them, may we be them."
