The Eighth Girl
The Eighth Girl: A Novel | Maxine Mei-Fung Chung
11 posts | 9 read | 7 to read
In this unsettling, seductive psychological debut, a young woman with multiple personalities is drawn into Londons hellish underworld when she becomes entangled with a man who has an abominable secret, for fans of Caroline Kepnes and Clare Mackintosh. One woman, multiple personas. But which one is telling the truth? Alexa W nearly has her life together: a new relationship, a job that pays the bills, and a promising interview for a photojournalism position. But, its complicated. Alexa is manipulated by a series of alternate personas that run her life, and its a constant struggle to keep her other selves in check, to prevent them from coming out when its not safe, to make sure no one is aware they existexcept for the three people she trusts: her psychiatrist; her stepmother; and her enigmatic best friend Ella. When Ella gets a job at a high-end gentlemens club, she catches the attention of its shark-like owner and is gradually drawn into his inner circle. As Alexas world becomes intimately entangled with Ellas, she soon finds herself the unwitting keeper of a nightmarish secret. With no one to turn to and lives at stake, she follows Ella into Londons cruel underbelly on a daring rescue mission. Vulnerable and in danger, Alexa will discover whether her multiple personalities are her greatest asset, or her deadliest obstacle. Electrifying and breathlessly compulsive, The Eighth Girl is an omnivorous examination of life with mental illness and the coruscating trauma of life in a misogynist world. With bingeable prose and a clinicians expertise, Maxine Mei-Fung Chungs psychological debut deftly navigates the swirling confluence of identity, innocence, and the impossible fracturing weights that young women are forced to carry, causing us to question: Does the truth lead to self-discovery, or self-destruction?

Mehso-so

I loved the idea of the book maybe more than I actually enjoyed the book. For me this was a 3/5 read, and I‘ll be honest… I almost DNFd it a few times. I wish the pace was a little faster, but all in all I‘m glad I stuck with it.

A girl with split personalities attempts to take down a sex trafficking ring.

Pickpick

This book was phenomenal! I‘ve seen a lot of people knocking it because it‘s labeled a thriller, and isn‘t, but the thriller aspects are in there.. they‘re just faint. Either way, I thought it was gorgeously written and totally fascinating!

Pickpick

I had my doubts when I first picked up this ARC - I‘m glad I gave “The Eighth Girl” a chance, I was immediately captivated and couldn‘t put the book down. Alexa Wu & The Gang are intriguing characters brilliantly crafted by Chung in the setting of London‘s seedy underbelly, and they kept me turning pages, (incorrectly) guessing at what was happening and how it would end. A March Must-Read for the thriller lovers out there! #bookswithbohemianyogini
