From multi award-winning and Sunday Times bestselling author author Jane Casey comes an incredibly exciting new Maeve Kerrigan crime thriller!
You've got to be in the club to know the truth.
Everyone's heard the rumours about elite gentlemen's clubs, where the champagne flows freely, the parties are the height of decadence . . . and the secrets are darker than you could possibly imagine.
DS Maeve Kerrigan finds herself in an unfamiliar world of wealth, luxury and ruthless behaviour when she investigates the murder of a young journalist, Paige Hargreaves. Paige was working on a story about the Chiron Club, a private society for the richest and most privileged men in London. Then she disappeared.
It's clear to Maeve that the members have many secrets. But Maeve is hiding secrets of her own – even from her partner DI Josh Derwent. Will she uncover the truth about Paige’s death? Or will time run out for Maeve first?

DS Maeve Kerrigan is called to the waterside where a 'mudlark' (someone who scavenges after the tide has gone out for property lost or abandoned in rivers such as the Thames) has made a grisly discovery. A human hand. Maeve discovers using DNA testing that the hand belongs to Paige Hargreaves, a young journalist looking into the activities of a secret club called the Chiron Club - a world of rich, privileged men. (Continued)

OutsmartYourShelf It seems an absolute age since I read the eighth book in the series 'Cruel Acts' (checking back it was 4 years ago!) & now I've just read this one & I'm about to read the latest release shortly. The case itself was okay, but let's face it, I'm reading this for the chemistry & 'will they/won't they' of Maeve & Derwent. 2y
OutsmartYourShelf Of course, there are a few obstacles in the way, namely Maeve's current boyfriend, Seth, & a massive secret that Maeve has been hiding from Derwent on someone else's behalf. Alas, the course of true love has never run smooth. We have some slight advancement on their relationship but the author is keeping us all waiting. 3.5🌟

TW: domestic violence, sexual assault, misogyny.

First book finished of 2023. With this novel, I‘m now caught up on the Maeve Kerrigan detective series, minus a few novellas. I have enjoyed this series a lot. The cases are always complicated, Maeve‘s personal life has a lot of layers, and I think it probably does a good job of capturing what it‘s like to work in a male dominated field. I will be ready for the next book when it comes out this year.

This was my #BookSpin for January.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 2y
jhod I just read the ARC of the next one - it's BRILLIANT!! 2y
MallenNC @jhod Awesome! I am so excited to hear that. I was trying to pace myself through the series but then I just decided I‘d rather be caught up. 2y

Concentration level is in the shitter again so I returned to #SeriesRead2021. It has been a while since I spent time with Maeve and Josh but it was like slipping into your favorite, comfy sweats. I may have to read the novellas while I wait for my next fix. 👍🏼

I love this Maeve Kerrigan series!! I was torn between reading slowly to enjoy it or racing through to find out whodunnit! The case for her to solve was a really good one and the long running friendship (if that‘s all it is) between Maeve and Josh Derwent is simmering along nicely! I‘m ready for the next one now!!

Maeve Kerrigan and Josh Derwent have their hands full when body parts are reported washed up in the Thames.
All evidence points to it being local journalist Paige Hargreaves who was last known to be working undercover on a story involving the Chiron club, an upmarket and elite gentleman's club.
There has been talk of underhand shenanigans before but nothing was ever proved and no one had any evidence.
But now Maeve is keen to find out the truth.

You‘d think Jane Casey couldn‘t get better, and then she writes this book! Fabulous plot, awesome side plots, fantastic writing! The case is intriguing, Maeve has a huge problem in her personal life, and she‘s keeping a massive secret from her colleague, Josh. If you‘re not famous with this series you should get into it immediately! 5/5

A body is found in the Thames and Maeve Kerrigan and Josh Derwent investigate.
The body is a local journalist, Paige Hargreaves.
She was working on a scoop about gentlemen's clubs and in particular the Chiron club.
It has a bad reputation for seedy goings on and Maeve is suspicious and decides to work undercover to follow the story herself.
Determined to find the clues she needs to solve the case she unwittingly puts herself in grave danger.

The loan finally came through from the library, so hoping to consume myself today to the latest book in the excellent #MaeveKerrigan Series.

Strongly recommend this series to all who love crime fiction, especially with a strong female lead.

Andrew65 @Crazeedi You will enjoy this one, already 18% through this book. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB It is one of my favourite series. Last Year Mo Hayder, Jane Casey and Adrian McKinty were all excellent reads. Unfortunately so far #NordicNoir is a pale comparison. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I agree and looking forward when we can move onto something more intriguing. 5y

1. The Cutting Place by Jane Casey

2. “I was going to take a picture of it to put on my Facebook page, because it looked like a hand. But then, when I got a bit closer, I thought it looked a bit too much like a hand. And then, of course... it was a hand.”

Paige Hargreaves, journalist, disappears while working on a story at Chiron Gentlemen Club. Lots of secrets are uncovered and Maeve finds out what happened to Paige. excellent plot and characters developed. best book in the series. revealing about Maeve's relationship with Seth & DI Josh Derwent's background. I'm waiting for Maeve and Josh to come together. Looking for the next installment. recommended

I figured out some parts but others took me by surprise. This is part of a series but it's easy enough to follow without having read all the others. The writing is well done and descriptive where it needs to be. Maeve is a strong lead but not without her own faults. The side story of her own life adds further depth and made me like her even more. I also love the relationships she has with her colleagues especially Josh. #readersfirst 4*

TrishB @Cathythoughts I read next to nothing for about 2 weeks..(for me!) outside stresses and work stresses. I‘m now trying to read ‘easy‘ books so if I‘m distracted it‘s not so difficult to pick back up. I suspect we‘ll all be a while getting back to any sort of normality ☹️ sending love and hugs 😘 5y

Just entered the draw for a copy of The Cutting Place by Jane Casey, having written my first impression of the opening chapters with just 7 minutes to go before the draw closes. 🤞🤞🤞🤞 Fingers crossed that I am successful as I love this series.

Been quite a while since I entered a prize draw for a book on Readers First so not sure if this will go for me or against me.

Tove_Reads Schools are closing, but will you still go or work from home? 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads They say schools are closing but not strictly true. Closing to majority of children but need to be open for children of care workers, health professionals, social worker children, people in food industry, food delivery drivers, children with high levels of special needs, children who have social workers. On top of that even lost Easter holiday (2 weeks) to be open to those same children. So situation not really changed. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 Also got to find a way to feed children on free school meals who aren‘t in school. My head is reeling and somehow find staff who are not ill or self isolating for medical conditions to staff it! Totally logistical nightmare and first heard about it was on the news! No information at all to schools. @Tove_Reads (edited) 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Our schools are closed and we have the same conditions in regards to care workers, health professionals and children in food programs. I don't think the burden should fall on the head masters or teachers to take care of these children. There has got to be people in these children's lives that can help take care of them. Neighbors, family members, volunteers etc. @Tove_Reads (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB The two week Easter Holidays is especially interesting as no staff are contracted for this period! Not sure where all our well being, mental health and safety fit into this. Big difference from caring role to teaching role. Also need staff, many are have to self isolate for 12 weeks due to pregnancy and Underlying medical conditions. Not to mention those self isolating for illness. Of course now all on my plate. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Your government needs to step up and take care of this problem. Where are the people who are above you (Your bosses - forget what you call them). That is totally ridiculous that you have to find solutions to this problem. It is the government's problem, not yours. Suppose you get sick, then what? (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Problem is our bosses are the local politicians effectively. We are an LA school (Local authority). Two days to go and don‘t even know who we are meant to care for. Today I effectively lost my job and was given a new one by order of Parliament. Everyone keeps coming to me fir answers but keep saying I only know what they now. We both got the message at the same time. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB At one point this week I only had one other Junior leader in school, others self-isolating. As I said to my PA, what happens if I go down! 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 That is a real catch 22 condition. Maybe things will iron out by Friday. I'm sure the parents will be contacting the politicians too. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Already lots of complaints on various sites about schools closing. Although over a third of the school not there today and getting worse every day. Last week attendance was 98.1%. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 With your health condition, you should be staying home too as your immune system is probably not the best. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB That is so true! 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I think that by Friday the parents will find somewhere for their children to be during the day. Don't worry about it - a solution will be there soon. The problem just has to play out. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Will have to see how this plays out, hopefully get some guidance soon. Sent email to LA earlier this week, not acknowledged or replied to! 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Contacting your union is a great idea! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB What a crazy and worrying time we are living through. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 It is very scary too! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB most definitely! Not helped by the media wall to wall coverage. (edited) 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Went to beach house today to put bags of salt in our water conditioner system. We just bought the salt, filled the container and came home. I was so surprised to see the traffic so heavy and the Walmart parking lots full with customers. There are lots of people that are not heeding the warnings. Just today, one of our health care leaders who are working daily with Trump said that the younger people are just as much at risk as the elderly 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Don‘t get it. If I didn‘t have to go out I wouldn‘t. Went to get shopping the other night but went at 9.30 pm when I knew it would be at its quietest. Wake up people! And so so selfish! 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 it‘s really crazy the way people are hoarding food. Our store has a delivery program so I made a list online 2 days ago but it can‘t be delivered until Monday as all the time slots were already taken. Starting tomorrow senior citizens can shop from 6am to 7am so it won‘t be so crowded. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB With work only getting to shops late at night, two days running could get no milk. One of my employees bought some for me and brought into school tonight for me as we sat and watched the press conference together. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 How nice! Helping each other is what people need to do instead of just thinking about themselves. At least now the stores are limiting quantities that people can buy. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB why they didn‘t do that from the beginning I don‘t know. Helping each other, positivity, a smile and a sense of humour is what will get us through to the other side. Oh and some good books! 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Well, everyone had some fun with the lack of toilet paper at the stores. I grabbed a few rolls from the beach house just in case my delivery on Monday is lacking in TP! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB We were well stacked up on TP before all this and always creative solutions. 😂 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Read an article today that people have been flushing all these substitutes for TP and their plumbing is getting clogged so these hoarders are really causing unnecessary problems. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB More problems for the future! 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Better days ahead, hopefully! Can't get much worse! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Unfortunately it will, before it gets better. But we‘ve got this, we can do it and we WILL get through to the other side! 👍 Look forward to hearing about a future trip for you to Scotland, just not this year. 😢 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 My husband said that things have to get better in regards to stock market and the virus before we can do foreign travel. His car has been declared totaled and he picks up his new car tomorrow. He moved from a sedan to a Cadillac SUV as he has been driving my Ford Escape and likes sitting higher in the seat. Some of our vacation money went towards the model he wanted. Somehow I think I may never get to UK. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB The stock market will eventually bounce back and if time it right will provide some great returns on any new investment. I will still be investing before the end of the tax year to make the most of the tax free allowance but will be timing that investment carefully and choosing the right defensive shares. 5y
Andrew65 Hopefully by 2021 Summer things will have returned to normal. Holidays at the moment are a non starter. We were due to go to Scotland over Easter, sad,y won‘t be! @eadieb 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Our investment manager called today to say that even though market is down 30% we have only lost 10% and they are taking advantage at this time and investing in some good stocks. So that was good news! 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Sorry to hear your trip is canceled because you so look forward to your trips and needed rest but definitely better to stay close to home at this time! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB That is what I will do. Yes like everybody paper value down a long way but still very strong,y in profit and not invested in the most vulnerable companies. Sure health and drug companies will do very well in the long term! Now looking to cherry pick where selling grossly overdone where investors panicked! I make my own investment decisions rather than have investment managers. Eventually in next few months most probably have a bit more (edited) 5y
Andrew65 👆 time to dabble. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Not even sure I‘ll get it off work over Easter now. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 That would be the pits! 5y
Tove_Reads So you are in charge of it all without any guidelines, but then again you are now a teacher? I guess the good thing is you‘ll get the two week break soon, which you will need! 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads We‘ve been asked / told? to keep schools open over Easter so looks like no holidays whatsoever! Problem I personally have is my wife‘s underlying medical conditions (as well as mine to some extent) against being Principal. Very torn about what I should do to protect school against protecting her. 😔 @EadieB 5y
Tove_Reads Really? That is... Yeah. So, you have to keep medical, logistics etc personnel‘s children in school then? Is that the reason? Will you be principal, teacher, nurse, entertainer, cook, washer? 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads And many things besides. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I‘m worried about you! Hope things get better soon! Would really hate it if you get the virus because of the stupid politicians! 5y
Tove_Reads Do you know what will happen? I guess in your case “business as usual”, going to work? How many kids will you have there? 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks, I‘m more worried about my wife if I catch it. She‘s has underlying health conditions. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Oh no! How many children are going to still be coming next week! 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads We are scheduling for around 5 or 6 staff each day. Taken a lot of phone calls to work out, expecting around 25-35 children , which will vary based on work patterns. Govt say expecting around 10% and not allowed more than 20%. Ours will be slightly under 10% but could still grow yet and change as epidemic gets worse locally. A number of staff now targeted to work from home supporting planning, resourcing etc, contact with children @EadieB (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Targeting these where have some kind of underlying health condition or a member of their family does. Ensuring they get paid by saying they need to work from home. So many staff upset yesterday, particularly those targeted to work from home as feeling so guilty. @EadieB (edited) 5y
Andrew65 Some schools said to staff all staff need to be in on Monday. Unbelievable. When will people take this seriously! @EadieB @Tove_Reads 5y
Tove_Reads People just don‘t seem to realize this is not just a flu for quite a few people. Not that a flu is nice either, and it can kill as well, but it doesn‘t spread like a bushfire. People don‘t seem to understand that spreading it to others is really serious business and health care systems will be vulnerable. Take care! Do you know if your Easter break is cancelled? 5y
Andrew65 At moment asking us to provide that cover over Easter too. Said to staff let know if available for Easter. Then aiming rolling programme of giving staff time off. But this is still up in the air at the moment. @Tove_Reads (edited) 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Health care workers are probably most vulnerable to get the virus so they will eventually have to have family stay home too. So your number of children will constantly change day by day. Soon everyone will see the benefits of everyone staying home. Try to stay safe and distance yourself from people as much as you can. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Will be doing, my leadership team are constantly nagging me about it. We‘ve set up video conferencing, in fact just finished a 40 minute video conference with my SLT. 5y
