Writing Wild: Women Poets, Ramblers, and Mavericks Who Shape How We See the Natural World | Kathryn Aalto
15 posts | 7 read | 16 to read
In Writing Wild, Kathryn Aaltothe bestselling author of The Natural World of Winnie-the-Poohexplores the important work of 25 women whose nature writing shapes the way we read the landscape. Starting with Dorothy Wordsworth, whose writing was a huge influence on her more famous brother William, and progressing through current names both familiar and not, Aalto profiles a diverse mix of women whose contributions to the world of nature writing have left an indelible mark. Featured writers include Gene Stratton-Porter, Mary Austin, Gretel Ehrlich, Lauret Savoy, Kathleen Jamie, Carolyn Finney, and more. Writing Wild is a rebuke of the traditional, all-male lineup. But more importantly, it's a celebration of beautiful writing, the nature it captures, and the legacy it left or is still shaping.

Hi all, thank you so much for joining me for our 1st midsummer event. I would really appreciate your thoughts/comments in order to plan our midwinter event. Please give honest feedback. Don't worry, I've got my Big Girl Pants on, I can take it! 🤪

I'm very disappointed personally, with the ending. Couldn't be helped due to my illness. Saying this, I wondered if anyone would be interested in co-hosting with me. ⬇️⬇️

AllDebooks Cont. Ideally, someone with wicca knowledge who could cover that angle. Cos I know very little tbh. 🤔 1y
AllDebooks I also really like Chrissy's idea of a season and would be happy to run a #solaceseason over 2 month periods. It would take pressure off to post every day over a 21-day period, that's for sure. 😅 Let me know your thoughts. 1y

TheBookHippie @AllDebooks I definitely think season! If @Chrissyreadit joins she can do Wicca I can help you both of you if want to do three peeps. Keep Jennifer to help you with swaps. 🤷🏻‍♀️I got sick at the end as well! 😵‍💫😅I am attached to a coven here they help me with gardening in summer I can always ask them too. (edited) 1y
AllDebooks @TheBookHippie that's great! Hope you're feeling better now x 1y
TheBookHippie @AllDebooks just occasional cough left 😵‍💫 I cannot remember the last time I had a summer cold flu…do not recommend 😝 1y
TheBookHippie I did love the challenge and the swap was fantastic! 1y
AllDebooks @TheBookHippie defo not fun 😕 1y
AllDebooks @TheBookHippie I'm so glad 😊 @jenniferw88 did a great job matching folks x 1y
jenniferw88 I'm happy to help with /do the swaps! And the season idea sounds good 1y
AllDebooks @jenniferw88 aww, excellent. I'm so glad. Thanks x 1y
AllDebooks @TheBookHippie @JenniferWelch & @Chrissyreadit (if you agree to being volunteered 🤣) Thanks so much for the offer of help. I'll pick this convo up via email in a week or so. Just waiting on feedback for #Midsummersolace x 1y
TheBookHippie @AllDebooks sounds good! 1y
Chrissyreadit i can help- but it may not be “pure” wicca- that‘s a formal organized religion. I‘m more witchy with several traditions/approaches. 1y
AllDebooks @Chrissyreadit that sounds perfect. Thank you x 1y
bnp I liked the photography challenge, but 21 days straight was too much for me. I could probably handle one/week. :) I also like the idea of spreading it out over a couple of months.

I'm glad you're feeling better.
1y
AllDebooks @bnp thank you for your feedback, all noted x 1y
julieclair I love the idea of a season! And I wish I could have signed up for the swap, but the timing was just not workable for me this time around. Thank you for hosting. Posting every couple of days, or any other changes you need to make, are totally fine with me. I‘m just so appreciative that you are willing to step up and host an event that we can all enjoy. 💝 1y
Cuilin I like the idea of focusing on a season. I try to incorporate the Celtic/Wiccan calendar into my life so like that idea too. I enjoyed the photo challenge and loved the swap. 1y
AllDebooks @julieclair @Cuilin thank you so much for your feedback. It's so helpful. 😊 1y

Hi all, I'm so sorry this kinda fizzled out. Things didn't go to plan as I became ill at the start of the week.

How are you getting on with our #buddyread

Please tell me, how was your Midsummer solstice? I hope you all had a pleasant day/evening. Thank you for joining me for our second solace event. I will be back with #Midwintersolace in December. ❤️🌞❤️

Blessings to you all xx

Chrissyreadit Our summer Solstice Day was rainy but we needed rain. And because life is a struggle I‘m honoring the Sabbats as Seasons- so this is Summer Solstice Season and it feels like a lovely time in general so far. Tea, tarot, planted a sunflower patch. Going to a Pride event today, plant more tomorrow. i hope you are feeling better- ❤️❤️❤️ 1y
majkia our #MidsummerSolace was hot and later we had thunderstorms. A quiet day for us. (edited) 1y

sebrittainclark It was too hot to spend much time outside unfortunately, but I'm hoping to make up for it this weekend. 1y
AllDebooks @Chrissyreadit that sounds a perfect way to celebrate, esp as a season rather than one day. I'm slowly starting to feel better, this hot, humid, damp weather wreaks havoc on my asthma. 1y
AllDebooks @majkia same here x 1y
AllDebooks @sebrittainclark it's so hot 🔥 I hope you have a great weekend x 1y
bnp I was working a late shift Wednesday, so it was pretty quiet for me. I like Chrissyreadlit's idea of celebrating the season. Hope you're getting some energy back. 1y
julieclair Oh my, I do hope your asthma calms down. That can be so debilitating. Our Solstice Day was rainy as well. In fact, the whole week was rainy. ☔️ @Chrissyreadit I love your idea of Summer Solstice Season! 1y
Catsandbooks @AllDebooks I hope you feel better soon! I have asthma too and this weather is terrible for it. It's been really hot by me too and it's gonna get hotter 🥵 I've been trying to stay cool this season. Enjoying lots of lemonade and fruit 🍓🍋 1y
TheBookHippie Oh I‘m so sorry! I had summer cold flu 😝 finally felt well day before yesterday! I‘m doing a season as well! Summer is so short so I‘m with @Chrissyreadit 1y
AllDebooks @bnp @julieclair I like @Chrissyreadit season idea too. Maybe we should adopt it for #Midwintersolace. I could run it through Nov and Dec. 🤔 1y

Do you spend time on self-care? Even if we do, it's usually one of the first things to go when life gets crazy. Ironically, this is probably the time when we need it the most.

What did you do today, just for yourself?

I spent ages in my garden, daydreaming, reading & loving our #buddyread and making plans of jobs to do. I needed a restful day today.

Catsandbooks I tested positive for covid yesterday so I've been sleeping, or trying to sleep. I somehow managed to avoid getting it until now. 2y
TheBookHippie @Catsandbooks oh girl. I am truly sorry. Rest rest rest! 2y

This is a dangerous book. I added numerous books to my TBR list. It's a series of essays about women who write about nature, many I didn't know. My last book finished for the #20in4 readathon. @Andrew65 #naturalitsy @AllDebooks

LapReader Gorgeous pic. 2y
AllDebooks Oh wow, that sounds amazing. Thanks for the tag. X 2y

Nature writing by women: Every poet and writer is briefly introduced and there is a sample of her writing. If you're looking for something in depth, I don't recommend it as every nature writer gets only a few pages and the reading samples are short, but highly recommend it for a reader who wants an overview of women's history through nature writing. And it's a good starting point for further exploring the authors you are interested in.

A delight! I planned to flip through this book of women nature writers to broaden my TBR, but it ended up being more than just a list of dry profiles & bibliographies. The author is a nature writer herself and spoke to many of those featured who are still living, even traveling to some of the places they had written about. Not only do the featured writers come to life, but so do their wild places. A wide-ranging celebration of women in the world!

batsy This sounds really fascinating! And the cover is so striking. 4y
tenar @batsy It was, and the illustrator also knocked it out of the park! You can see the wrap-around cover and some of the lovely author portraits here: https://www.workman.com/products/writing-wild 4y

The box got banged up a bit but my #cab10kgiveaway package has arrived and I LOVE it! @Catsandbooks thank you so much! I‘ve been looking forward to this book for a long time and I ❤️ the socks.
Unfortunately, the #manpanion stole the candy ( I‘ll get it back once he goes to bed 😀). Thank you again.

Catsandbooks Oh phew! I was worried it got lost or stolen! So glad it made it, even if banged up! Enjoy dear! 💕 4y

I haven‘t posted in a bit, but I‘m back for #NonfictionNovember! The stated goal is to read more nonfiction than you usually would, and I plan to read it exclusively. I have a huge nonfiction list at the library and just looking at it sparks joy.

I will be reading We Are Displaced with the #SheSaid bookclub and hope to get to as many others as I can. Writing Wild profiles 25 women nature writers; it‘s a book to help me discover more books 😍📚🍂

Reading this was a pleasure - short profiles of women writing about science, nature, the environment - from a wide range of time periods, backgrounds, etc. I had read quite a few of the women (some are favorites close to my heart - Annie Dillard, Mary Oliver, etc) but still my TBR grew exponentially!
Comes out in June, originally should have been April!

Centique I do love a book that puts more books on my TBR. That might be a sign of addiction! PS I just finished Crossing to Safety and I just want to hug it for a few days and maybe cry a bit. 😍 5y
ReadingEnvy @Centique I love when books feel like that 5y
